Trivia:
Started joining fantasy role playing games whilst at university and in 1984 he began practicing medieval sword fighting with a local club
Began work on The Lord of the Rings in 1998
Has worked with animatronics, as a modeler and as a puppeteer on other Weta projects since The Lord of the Rings
Began making his own re-enactment equipment after purchasing cheap metal working tools
Main interest is medieval Europe
Created many of the “hero” swords used in The Lord of the Rings (ones used for the close-up shots) as well as the stunt swords and various other pieces
Made his first sword in 1985
Joined Weta in 1998 as Senior Swordsmith
Moved to Wellington in 1986 and in the following year joined the Wellington Medieval Guild where he was an instructor until 2003
In 2001, he began making 1/6 scale replicas of swords, learning how to make weapons with jewellery-like precision. These replicas would then be used on collectable Sideshow-Weta plaques
Has a BA in history, specializing in medieval history
Became self employed in 1994. His workshop grew as fellow re-enactors kept requesting swords from him
Joined the Order of the Boar in 1997, New Zealand’s only jousting group. He has been jousting since 2000
