The Stewards were instated when the last king of Gondor disappeared, leaving no heir. Faramir's mother died when he was only five years old. Faramir looked very much like his father, Denethor, but was very different in spirit and personality. Denethor favored his elder son Boromir, who resembled him less in looks but more in manner. Denethor's dislike of Faramir heightened when, at an early age, Faramir became enamored of Gandalf, whom Denethor had always hated. Faramir and Boromir had the same dream which told them to seek for Imladris and the "Sword that was broken." Faramir begged his father to let him go on the errand, but Denethor refused and sent Boromir. After Boromir died, Faramir did work for both himself and his brother. He was beloved by his troops, who would follow him into death if need be. When Frodo and Sam were traveling through Ithilien, Faramir happened to be stationed there, along with other Rangers, as a defense against the Southron men who were joining Sauron's forces. Faramir captured the hobbits (Gollum evaded capture) and took them to Henneth Annun, the Rangers' hideout. There he learned that Frodo bore the One Ring. Faramir was tempted by the Ring for a moment, but his nobility prevailed and he resisted the temptation. He warned the hobbits against Gollum, whom he saw as an evil creature only waiting for a chance to betray his master. Two days after Frodo left Henneth Annun, Faramir returned to Minas Tirith with a small company of men. Outside the walls of the city they was attacked by five Nazgul. The men were rescued by Gandalf, and safely reached Minas Tirith. Denethor ordered Faramir to return to and defend the ruined fortress of Osgiliath, but two days later, Osgiliath and the fields of the Pelennor were overrun, and Prince Imrahil brought the severely wounded Faramir back to his father. That wound, combined with grief over his father's semi-insanity, and the shadow of the Ringwraiths, caused him to fall into a deep fever. Denethor believed his son to be without cure, and resolved to burn his son and himself alive rather than face the seemingly inevitable defeat by Mordor. Faramir was rescued by his loyal soldier, Beregond, though Denethor leapt onto the prepared pyre and was consumed in the fire. After the Battle of the Pelennor Fields, Faramir was healed by Aragorn. Faramir met and fell in love with Éowyn while in the Houses of Healing, and they married after the War of the Ring. Aragorn gave Ithilien to Faramir as his princedom, and Faramir and Éowyn lived in that fair land for many years in peace.
