You're a hobbit because you have less than 49 posts. To get a higher rank you have to post more. The ranks are as follows:

Hobbit: 0-49 posts
Dwarf: 50-99 posts
Dunadan: 100-249 posts
Elf: 250-499 posts
Maia: 500-999 posts
Vala: 1000+ posts
