My apologies that I can't help yoou with you dilema. But if it any help, I can tell you how to get an avatar: Go to Profile and scroll all the way to the bottom and there you will find many avys to chose from. Just click on "Show Gallery"
To get a banner I think that you have to put the URL on the spcae of your signature, you will find it in Profila again. Some1 correct me if I'm wrong.
