Well, technically speaking I'm not 'new', I joined in 2007. After lurking for 2 years I finally decided to start posting! So hello everybody! I think I'll have a lot of fun here.

As an aside, does anyone know where it would be appropriate to post an essay? I see a fanfiction and poetry board, but nothing for essays.

I can't say I've ever tried to post an essay, but I'd be heading the the fanfic board. I guess, depending on the context, it could also fit in on the 'Your Life' board. It's really your call. There are no penalties for posting in the wrong spot- if it's way out of place a mod might move it, but that's not the end of the world. What's the essay about?

Well, it's good to know there are no penalties for posting in the wrong board. I figured the fanfiction/poetry board was my best bet, but I wasn't sure. The essay is kind of a mixture of a defense of Book!Arwen and why she's one of my favourite characters. It was just written for fun, because I'm a big fan.

About your essay - not too sure. Sounds like it could either go in Fanfiction & Poetry or Completely Miscellaneous LotR. Try the F&P section, if it doesn't go there, the mods will see fit to move it for you.

Oh, that's right! I forgot that you'd know stuff. Yesh, lurking is awesome. I remember feeling like I knew everyone before I joined, and then actually having to join and feeling all nervous. If people love Arwen or other characters I don't like, I respect that. Character wars can get really ugly and I can't stand fights like that because it ruins the happiness that is AU. If I'm going to talk about my dislike for certain character, I normally leave it for PMs with a person who I know doesn't like that character, too. I just have fun with my odd-ball A/Eness!

I believe I can help you with your questions. First, on centering your banner, all you have to do is put this:
On your second question, I'm assuming you mean the text in your sig? To make it bigger or smaller, just put this: And that should do the trick. Also, if you want to change the color of the text in your sig, it's much the same - just put
