I just joined - due to doing research for my son - and thought I might get some other ideas on how other JRR Tolkien fans feel about his works.

Since my first read of his book, The Hobbit, I have been captivated by the world he had created...there are not enough of those in my humble opinion. It was not until my son wanted to see the movies that I remembered how much I loved to place myself in those old stories. Also I remembered how much I had forgotten. Strange how things seem to pass from memory when the worries of life engulf a soul.

Hope I will be an asset to the site and thanks for having me.

Oh, btw, the Balrogs do not have wings as we know them... :)

WELCOME to the forum!

It's lovely to know that you have a son and you're passing on knowledge to younger generations!

I wish you the loveliest of times in this forum!

(I urge you to go to the "Do Balrogs have wings" thread in The Fellowship of the Ring forum, and put forth your argument!

Al.x

Hello Gandalf! Welcome to the AU forum. You sound like just the sort of person who will really enjoy serious Tolkien conversations. You will find quite a few boards to your liking. :) If you need any help at all then please do not hestitate to ask me or the other members of The Welcoming Team.

I wish you a pleasant stay. :bye2:

Thanks, everyone. I have dipped my toes into the water and have found it quite convivial...therefore I have made my first post in the FotR thread.

And, yes, Johnny's Fan, I do so love an intelligent conversation.

Then Gwen it is. I once had a sister by that name that was taken from us not long ago. She was so young and full of life, only 32 years of age at the time of her death. I loved her so.

Only to feel those old feelings of freedom of mind - to explore the imaginations of man - is far greater a gift than of gold and silver. Yes, I think even to re-explore is an adventure at my age. Gray hair is a sign of age, but is no indicator for vigor. :-D

Depending on how much Elvish you know, well, "Suilaid" means Greetings in Elvish . . .

Well, welcome to the forum! I'm Elb - short for Elberethsq. It's good to have you with us here at this forum, and we hope that you'll enjoy your stay here. You're an adult correct? We do have our share of adults here at this forum - although I think most of us go around the teenage-years section.

Well, I, too, am impressed with Tolkien and his works - everything seems so detailed, and every corner explored - he makes it seem like a real world due to all the details he puts into Middle-Earth, and it's history and the many different languages and peoples.

Anyway, we hope you'll enjoy your stay here at the forum. I'm rather impressed by your name - because since this forum has a fair amount of members, a one-word name that very frequently occurs in Tolkien's works and in the movies - most of those kind of names are already taken. So it's good that you've snagged the name Gandalf when you did. :bye2:
