Aiye everyone.

I am Aerandir Seregon.

I am here to try and learn Elvish. Tried a lot of placed but cannot find any decent places.

If anyone would be interested in coaching me that would be great.

See you around.

As awesome as Tolkiens languages are, and as much as he had developed them, genuinely, my suggestion is that you try and learn an "actual" language if you're interested in languages. Elvish is 1. not a language you'll ever have use for. 2. it was never completed = you can never actually properly learn it.

I know some people claim to be fluent in it but that's actually impossible. As someone who is in the process of learning Japanese while living in Japan, I say, dude, find a language in the world that fascinates you and go to that country and learn it and be awesome!

But welcome either way, of course!

Alduin I have already learned another world language. With all respect, before jumping to assumptions perhaps ask more questions first.

The reason I want to learn Elvish is because of the very reason you say I should not. Yes it is not a world language that I am going to use with everyday people.

I want to learn this language because little people know it.

Elvish does fascinate me hence why I want to learn more.

All your reasons you have stated for not learning it are all the reason I want to.

Welcome!

I think Elvish is actually pretty close to Welsh. I think I saw something on one of the EE boxsets, that they speak Welsh in place of Elvish. Or Elvish was based off it. I'll have to look it up.

Hi Aerandir

Kudos for wanting to learn elvish! I suppose it's a bit like learning Latin in that it has very little use, but can give you more insight into Tolkien's works. Neither Quenya (high elvish) or Sindarin (grey elvish) were fully completed as Tolkien never intended them for conversational use, as to him they were historical dead languages that embellished his mythology. Erin's comment above is fairly close in that Quenya is based around the structure of Finnish and Sindarin Welsh, but that's not to say that learning them is the same as elvish as they were just inspiration.

I'm not sure you'll find a coach here, but I may be wrong! My suggestion is to look at the appendices of The Silmarillion as it has one of the most complete lists of elvish words and explains how names are made up. If I remember rightly it also explains how certain letter combinations like 'dh' should sound, though this may also be in the LOTR appendices. Councilofelrond.com has a really good guide on starting to learn elvish too so definitely check that out.

And finally. Welcome to the forum!

I think we can learn about Tolkien's Elvish languages. You can learn about them, and you can learn about how, over the many years, Tolkien changed his mind concerning them [even altering already published details here and there], but you can't learn to speak them like other Primary World languages, even a language like Latin.

What you see in the films and often enough on the net is a simplified 'patchwork' version of Sindarin or Quenya, called Neo-elvish, and it might be giving the false illusion that one can learn Quenya or Sindarin, as in learn to speak these tongues. I recommend reading...

http://www.elvish.org/FAQ.html

... and especially Elvish as She Is Spoke linked from this FAQ.

I have found it rewarding to learn some things about Tolkien's languages [I am no trained linguist or expert], and you can learn something about them by looking at certain Neo-elvish courses; but I would also recommend keeping in mind the nature of these courses and the overarching caution presented in the above FAQ and essay.

And if one disagrees with the characterizations in the FAQ and linked essay, fine of course.

But I agree with them. Well, obviously :-D
