Hi. I'm mithril maiden but you can call me mith for short.

I am a LOTR fan but mostly the movies. I have never read the books. I was recommended to this forum by a friend of mine, Jax Nova.

There is a lot here so it might take me a while to learn my way around but it looks like a lot of fun.

Welcom, mellon!

I'm new myself, so I also need to explore this forum a bit more.
If you're not familiar with the books yet, I would start reading the hobbit of LORT. The Silmarilion are less easy, reads more like a history textbook. I'm going to read the Unfinished tales.

Of course :p but if you read LotR first you'll see a whole bunch of parallels and references to the Sil, plus LotR is easier ;)

I feel the Silmarillion is sort of an overwhelming thing for anyone to start with, I think the easiest way to enter the world of Tolkien is... Hobbit > LotR > Silmarillion. :)

I'm thinking you guys are probably right... hobit LOTR and then silmarilion.... but still like I said... I am just prejudiced.

Wow, thanks for the welcome everyone!

Oh my... I don't know about the silmarilion. It sounds a little too complicated for me. The hobbit sounds better.

I just have a hard time with the differences because I'm kind of in love with the movies.... I'm afraid the books will be too different.

Ah... well. Each to their own.

I'd be partial to the books myself and wish the movies were a little closer to the books. *shrugs* I guess I can see, though, why one would be partial to what they first knew.

The books definitely came first for me (mom used to read them to me when I was a kid), but I love both the books and movies on the same level - for their own reasons and despite the differences. :)

So it's definitely possible to love both, I wouldn't worry too much about the differences. :) I would definitely recommend reading the books! Back in high school I got a friend into the movies and she eventually picked up the books....and she fell in love with the Silmarillion when she finally got to it!

Yes. I know.

I'm just so in love with the movies that I don't want it to be changed.

I'm sure it is an irrational fear.

Maybe sometime I will try and buy the hobbit to start out on if I have some extra money.

Hello Mithril_Maiden!!! Welcome to AU! :-D :-D

I am Synariel. I hope you enjoy your stay here! ^^

I would also recommend The Hobbit>>The Lord Of The Rings>>The Silmarillion as a reading order.
For me the Silmarillion was easier to read after because things I heard in the movies got me interested
in back-stories, and those back stories were all in the Silmarillion. :) I think the Sil can mean more
to a fan after LOTR because you come to love the characters so much that what they care about
becomes interesting to you. So you go to the Sil to learn about the stories that touched them so
much. :)

Also, I would like to put your mind at ease about the books. Though they're fairly different from the movies
in some areas, they were NOT a let down! At least not as far as LOTR goes. It's been so long since I've
read the Hobbit I don't remember all the details...But the LOTR books parts that were different from
the movies were usually better than what was in the movie. :) So the differences weren't bothersome then. ;)

Thank you.

It's lovely to meet you Synariel!

I love your avatar, by the way!

Thank you. I will just have to make myself sit down and read the hobbit when I am able to pick it up.
