Hi Cazza, and welcome!! To put an avvie up (the pic) there's a button on the bottom of your profile that says show gallery, and you click on one of those and then click select avatar. For the siggy, you type [img]then%20the%20link%20of%20your%20banner,%20and%20then[/img]. (no space between [img] and the link. (I didn't get how to do that either when I first joined.) Anyway........I hope you have a great time at AU!!!

Hopefully Varda's explanation helped, but I have one suggestion for you: if you have your own avvie you want to put on, go to the bottom of your profile and click on "browse" this should show you all of your personal saved pics.
