Oh it wasn't long ago actually that I came across a website that mentioned the basis for Athelas. I don't even remember now what it was, but it's a real plant, obviously.

I always thought it looked like the weed that covers the open ground in my dad's garden. That's here in Australia, but I know we share a few animals and plants with NZ, so yeah.

They're sort of very green and lush and grow like a ground cover and are easy to rip out of the ground, I've never seen them flower, but the leaves are round and sort of grow the same way, I've always thought the shrub in the movie looked familiar...
