Take a look at the front page of www.theonering.net. I'm skeptical, but this is the most professional announcement we've had yet.

Hmmm, that's interesting... but I wonder, would New Line actually give up the part of the rights that they currently have?

I imagine it is more of a partnership.

As it is, I have very high hopes. I do think it is true, though it won't be until 2008 or 2009, at the earliest.

I just dearly hope that PJ is the one filming it.

It would be such a horrible career choice for Peter! I just can't see him doing it.
Doesn't MGM own the rights to the Hobbit, and New Line to LotR? Or something?

i personally would love PJ to do the hobbit....in new zeland and with weta and all of them again b/c i would know i was getting a really great film b/c we all saw how he did LOTR. im really hopeing that new line would be the ones doing it because it kinda makes sences to me for them to do it seeing as how they did LOTR and it would help them alot too b/c of the audience they would get from the movie. (audience meaning money) i think it would be a smart move on the're part to be invloved....and personally would like the same company to do the prequil to LOTR, i just like the idea of all 4 being from newline.

I didn't say I don't want PJ to do it, I only said I thought it was a bad career choice. I definitely want him to do it. :P
Think about it, though. How many people around you still like Lord of the Rings as much as we do?Most are getting tired of it. PJ made a fortune doing LotR, and a lot of people would, I think, critisize him if he made the Hobbit- saying that he's just trying to tap into the cash again because King Kong didn't do as well, or that he just can't let go of Hobbits, or something like that.
Also, it's really anticlimactic. Yes, a lot of the ticket sales came from us fans, but a lot of them came from interested movie-folks, too. RotK ended with a bang, eleven Oscars, everyone everywhere walking out of the theater in tears...so can you imagine going back to the very beginning, after an ending like that? Too anticlimactic.

All that said, I think it would be really fun if the Hobbit got made.
