I was just wondering what other people thought re the book being better than the movie or vice versa. Personally, I like the books better. They came first, of course, and without the books, you wouldn't have the movies. But there are also parts I like and don't like in the movie, and it leaves almost nothing to the imagination. PJ DID do a good job about turning it into a movie, but personally I wish he's have stayed a little closer to the book. For example... 1. Too much Arwen/Aragorn kissing stuff. They didn't need quite all of that. 2. They shouldn't have had Arwen saving Frodo. I think they should have kept it so Gil-whatever (sorry, I just can't remember the rest of his name) took him to Rivendell. 3. The whole thing when Elrond delivered Anduril. 4. The Elves at Helm's Deep. (not that I mind more Haldir, but whatever). 5. Not that they could help it, but I would have loved to see Tom Bombadil. 6. I also would have liked to see Eowyn and Faramir walking in the garden. 7. I have to re-read a bit of the book, but I'm not sure exactly how much goes on between Eowyn and Aragorn. yeah. |

the book is better IMO ... i'd rather have the movie follow the book more ...and I didn't like the Elves at Helm's Deep and Haldir dying at all... |

Agreed to all that! I love both the books and the movies, but I'd have to say I like the books a little better. The movie did make some changes that I liked, but some of the changes were awful (such as Faramir, all the junk with Arwen leaving and then being sick, and the elves coming to helms deep AND THEN ALL DYING!). But I'm glad that PJ made movies, because I think the books and the movies compliment each other. The books are better because of the movies, and the movies are better because of the books (as in, the movies are better if you've read the books-- obviously there would be no movies without the books). |

i know its asking a lot but i really wanted the poems to be in teh movie and i was really disappointed how they showed Sam rescueing Frodo from the orcs. I had read the book before seeing the third movie so i had a really nice picture of what was going on. and sam was supposed to wear the ring...... and what about the watchers whom sam blinds when he runs through. i mean the movie does show the watchers but onlly as statues... it would have been cooler if they were real. that part was really suspenseful in the book. and i imagined it to be reallly great in teh movie... oh well. i guess its really easy to complain. |

^I agree with all that too. I really miss all the poems. The thing I missed probably most of all in that respect was Sam's wonderful song in the Tower of Cirith Ungol, when he thought all hope was lost... "In western lands beneath the sun The flowers may rise in spring, The branches bud, the waters run, The merry finches sing. Or maybe there 'tis cloudless night And swaying beeches bear The elven stars as jewels white Amidst their branching hair. Though here at journey's end I lie In darkness buried deep Beyond all towers strong and high, Beyond all mountains steep; Beyond all shadows rides the sun, And stars forever dwell I will not say the day is done, Nor bid the stars farewell." Correct me if I messed that up at all... that's such a beautiful poem... |

yeah... I agree with what all of you all said. And since I had to wait until just recently to see the movies, then I had read the books once to myself and my older sis had read them outloud to all of us. PJ chose the actors well and directed it well, but might I go as far as to say that the movie seems to be more for people who have never read the book, if you take my meaning. |

^Yes, I agree. I'm not sure why Peter Jackson did it that way... but he did. Luckily, there's still so much of the origional feel of the book, that we book-lovers can still enjoy the movies, even if not as much as the books. I also read the books first, my parents made that a rule. I read them first at 10 years old, and have now read them 7 times. They never grow old. Rather, they get better every time I read them. |

completely agree. i've read them three times so far and every time i read them i discover something new, something better. thats the thing i love about reading books in general. u find something new every time. |

I make tons of notes each time I read them and am going to have to start marking up my book. Anyone think marking my book is not a good idea? |

I don't think I would, but if they're your books why not! I want to read them again over Christmas break. I can't during the school year, I have loads of school. |

heh... yeah I plan to read them every summer because during the school year I have school work, activities, and books for school to read. Wouldn't I love to read LotR for school! |

personally i wouldnt liek writing in the books id keep a small note book with me where i'd have all my notes adn stuff. but whatevers easier adn comfortable for u |

I wanted to take notes while reading Unfinished Tales, but was too lazy.  However, I remember a good deal of it. I have trouble forgetting anything I read in the way of Tolkien!
