Post subject:  Legolas's true hair colour

Everyone thinks Legolas's Hair colour is golden.WHY?because in the hobbit,Legolas's father Thranduil was described with Gold hair.Naturally everyone even peter jackson thinks Legolas's Hair is gold.
But in the book Tolkien describes Legolas with dark hair.

hmmm???

Not really. He descibes Legolas standing infrount of the moon and even though I dont have a copy handy with me he mentions a dark head but that could just be a siloete. I'll try and find the passege and post it later.

But even after reading the book (Hobbit and LOTR) I belive he has golden hair.

Well, this is a very interresting subject to talk about because there have been many online debates about this. In one of the LotR books it reads, "Frodo looked up at the Elf standing tall above him, as he gazed into the night, seeking a mark to shoot at. His head was dark crowned with sharp white stars that glittered in the black pools of the sky behind" (I hope that fair rider doens't mind me going ahead and quoting that)
Personaly, I think that it certainly could have been either. Genetics would suggest that it was blonde (like his father). However genetics goes both ways. Several think that his mother was silvan and if I'm not mistaken they usally had dark hair. Which means that geneticly he could have had blonde or dark hair. Hmm, I 've thought about this for a long time and have decided that I'm un-decided. lol (laughs) Um, if I just had to say which one I thought it was, I would say blonde and that it looked dark simply because it was dark outside. However I have nothing to back this thought up with. Therfore I'm more than willing to hear what others have to say and perhaps change my opinion.

It's O.K Drew's Destiny, you can use it I don't mind.

But you see what I mean. Personally I think it was a silloete in contrast to the night sky. I find it very hard now to imagine Legolas with brown hair, probably because of the way he was in the LOTR films.

Maybe I am just diffrent but I think that Legolas had a Sindarin mother. Thranduil came out of Lindon most definitly not as a young elf so I have reason to belive that he was already married. I think Legolas had Blonde hair....just not the extreamly ugly platnium that PJ gave him in the movie

Thranduil was Sindarin, and his mother is most commonly considered to be Silvan. Regardless, I can picture Legolas with either blond or light brown hair, but not with dark brown or black. I just can't do it.

It's just impossible to think of Legolas with any dark hair for me - maybe I'm being ridiculous but every time I try I just can't!

I've seen a few fan arts of him with brown hair, and he just seems...wrong.

I like to think that Legolas had silver hair. The genetic thing still makes since because When Bilbo saw Thranduil, he was sitting beside a fire, which would have made his hair appear golden if it where silver. Also some Sindarin elves had silver hair, such as Elu Thingol. And since Thranduil was Sindarin, it's possible.

I don't think that he was blonde because that colour seems reserved for the Vanyar and to my knowledge, Legolas has no vanyar ancestry.

I just can't picture him dark-headed. I don't know why.

Looking at fair rider's siggy, I find it difficult to place Legoals with dark hair. I can picture it, but it just looks strange. So I guess maybe his hair is golden under sunlight, and dark under moonlight.

One thing my friend Philip says is that Tolkien also never describes the elves with pointy ears and long hair.

I can't say much about the long hair, but he does mention that elves have 'leaf' shaped ears.

I have to agree with Luiniel in this subject; before the movies came out, I always had imagined Legolas with silver hair. o_O I was so disappointed when they made him blonde. I mean, it's bad enough Orlando Bloom played him, but to make him BLONDE? My heart was broken. :P

Golden hair wasn't just reserved for the Vanyar--it was just most common among them.

I watched FotR before I read the books, but I read The Hobbit before then, and I pictured the wood elves with all different shades of hair--black, brown, blonde, and silver. And I always pictured Thranduil as having blonde hair. And that stuck with me through LotR, even though I had seen the first movie before I read the books--despite the fact that I imagined Legolas the way Orlando portrayed him, at that stage I could've imagined him however I chose to--I had only seen the movie twice.

So I imagine him with light brown or blonde hair. Not black, not Silver.

^I agree with Aerandir, and my situation was exactly the same.

And I'm not sure why some of you think his hair is "extremely ugly platinum" blonde... my hair looks pretty much like that, except a bit wavier, so I appreiciate that.
