I'm playing the piano, and I love playing classical music, like Schubert, Beethoven, Mozart, or Haydn. Just one of my friends plays an instrument as well, she plays the flute, but she plays more modern music. For my friends, it is okay that I play this kind of music, but I won't tell them, that I could listen to Howard Shore's music or to classical music for hours. I fear that they would love at me, and I don't like this at all. This is the reason why I don't tell them.
And I won't tell them that I would like to buy the notes for the LotR film music for the piano, because then I would be sure that they would think me crazy...

yeah i love classical music also but everyone teases me because i like it, and they think i'm nuts cause i'm so crazy about LOTR and that makes me feel horrible to know there's no one like me...exept here and they're like 'wait a sec, okay wow...' when i play celtic music to them, thats also another reason why they think i'm nuts *crying my eyes out* can anyone help me???
and i also think everyone has the right to be their selves, like any music they like etc. without being to 'odd-one-out'!!!

*agrees* all people think I'm crazy because I like LotR. I play the recorder and I like Celtic music and I also often play some melodies of LotR just for fun

I do NOT want to get into this discussion...
But I am like that, so I will state my opinion short and quickly.
Harry and his friends are humans who use magic, plus the HP worlds have an entirely different worldview from LotR. In LotR only elves and 'wizards' (aka Istari, which are more like angels anyway,) use magic, and it is a gift bestowed upon them by Illuvatar. It is a part of their character. HP & co. learn magic by spells and witchcraft. Plus, magic when wielded by men is shown as very dangerous in LotR.
Okay, I'm done. No one be offended, please, just my opinion! *hides*

^Yeah, I also think (note the word 'I' because I'm not persuadeing anyone to think as me!) there's a huge difference between Harry Potter and LOTR. In lotr it's not 'avada kedavra' and someone's dead or 'cruciatus' and someone's screaming their eyes off. No one is killed/tortured straightly by magic in lotr. The wizards, like you said just before me (cant remember your name anymore) are Istari, like angels who are sent to the Earth to help its people. Saruman is different, he was good, but fell into darkness because of his greed for power, but Gandalf, he uses magic only in the uttermost need, to fight against the Balrog in fotr. And that isn't like 'expelliarmus' and the Balrog's whip flies away, but real power, influation, and... something that is way more powerful than any other magic. And in harry potter, they learn (even if they are muggles like hermione) magic by witchcraft. In lotr, Istari are Istari and so on. Again just my opinion, no hard feelings on anyone, dont ge mad at me... *runs away and hides* thats just the way I think it is...

*totally agrees* Harry Potter and LotR are sooooooooo different. And that's whay I don't like people comparing them to each other or saying they're just the same. I e.g. LOVE LotR, but don't like Harry Potter that much and I don't think they're the same at all (my personal opinion about which story I like better isn't important, I just wanted to make clear that I think they're not the same at all).

When I first read the title of this thread I thought it said "My mother does not like green eggs and ham"
o_O Dude
My mum doesnt really know all that much about lotr, she says she has more important things to do around the housethan sitting down and watching a 9 hour movie.
My dad is the major obsessor, he has been a fan of lotr for as long as I could remember.
