FotR: "Orcs!" Thank you Captain Obvious.
TTT: "The horn of Gondor!" Thank you Captain Obvious.
RotK: "A diversion!" Shut up Captain Obvious.

I am sure that all of you have realised it... but why did PJ have to make him look so stupid? He wasn't supposed to be... or is it just Orlando?

Well I will admit that I have noticed that too. However I don't think that it made him look stupid. I just thought that he was interpretating. Some of my friends found that helpful actualy...not so much the orc remark but the other two and so forth. It didn't really bother me, if anything I leaned more towards thinking it to be useful. I also don't think that it was Orlando's doing. I think that he may add lib now and again but not in the same way every singal time in such simular parts...especialy not in LotR. It might have been PJ though. If it was his doing then I would guess that he was indeed using Legolas as an interpreter. :duh: Maybe PJ thought that it was a movie that at times would be hard to follow...especialy for those who had not read the books previous to the movies' coming out. I found it confusing every once and awhile and my fellow viewers found it...Very confusing...I had to inerpreter a couple of times. So having Legolas now and again play Captain Obvious was honestly okay with me...I kind of liked it even. :-D That is just my opinion though. (shrugs)

Okay yeah maybe not stupid.. but it *was* kind of funny at times.
Diversion thing was kind of silly though... what else could it be?

well yeah.. he is Captain Obvious.. kinda. But I agree with what Drew's Destiny said. I think that Legolas was used to interpret certain things in the movies and also that PJ used him to explain things to the audience (for the not so clever people..). I never found the movies very confusing, but I've heard of a lot of people who did, so I think they probably found Legolas' comments very helpful.

True... imagine them without Captain Obvious *appalled*...

I think that sometimes it was good, but other times I think it would have been okay for PJ to leave his obvious remarks out.

I think it was for the losers in the audience who couldn't follow a plot line if they tried. Also, for the "orcs" part, it could have been for the people who didn't know anything about LotR, so that they would know who was attacking.

^ I agree, Shadowcat.

It really does make me laugh though, the sheer obviousness of it

Oh yeah... but the sad thing is that people were still confused even after Legolas's ridiculous lines.

Makes me wonder about human intelligence, really.......

How hard is it to follow? I have a few friends (the select ones, mind you... with brains) who have never touched a Tolkien book, and they understand the movies perfectly *scratches head* Without my help :P

yeah it is strange how some people still don't understand the story isn't it?? I mean if somebody misunderstands the books that's kinda acceptable, but the movies are pretty easy to understand in my opinion.

I think that he is a little "too" obvious sometime, but I do like Drew's point of helping with the plotline. Whatever the reason it is, the idea of this is still funny.

He can be too obvious. I wish they had made him more like the wise book Legolas, who actually did many important things. But NO, we must give everything to Aragorn. So, in that case, I don't mind Legolas being Captain Obvious too much. It's part of his charm. :D I just wish they hadn't taken away some of the seriousness of his character. Basically he had small lines and nice poses to keep the fangirls happy. :P

yeah I agree with you. Sometimes you seem to forget that he actually is the only elf in the Fellowship, so he is quite important. He wasn't a very important figure in the books either, but as you already said he was more serious and also more elf-like in my opinion.

 He is a true Captain Obvious. I would've said it was just Olrando but then that would be an insult to other actors who are nothing like their characters. I think PJ just made him that way. He changed a lot of characters personalities. Some I didn't mind and liked the change (Haldir XD) and some I think really didn't need a change at all (Legolas). But I think he made Legolas alittle too dumb and in my opinion. It kinda makes Elves look bad the way I see it. But that's just me.

I found that is followed in character with the movie Legolas. It seemed to my that he 'Just had to say something', otherwise he would have had no line for the entire 5 minutes!1!!

I found them more annoying than amusing, but they followed in character with Legolas in the movies in my opinion.
