Has anyone else noticed that in the films EVERYONE has blue eyes, its not just Frodo, EVERYONE!!! Ok there are one or two with brown, but everyone else, the majority of the majore charecters, all have blue eyes. Once you notice this it will jump out at you in every short.

I have noticed it actually. It's like almost everyone's eyes change colour during the films. Aragorn's eyes look gray from a distance but up close they are blue! Most of the character's eyes look like a different colour from a distance but they are always blue in the close ups. A most curious thing...

I have noticed as well. Yet in the book just about everyone has grey eyes. Tolkien himself stated that the Elves had gray eyes. Even the Dúnedain had grey eyes.

Yeah but the Rohirim have blue eyes and the gondorians ave blue eyes in the films too and the majority of the hobbits.

If it wasn't for one or two of the good guys haveing brown eyes i would say that the only people with brown eyes are the bad guys...

Ha ha ha! I never even noticed this! Man. Now I'm gonna have to watch them to see what you're talking about - weeeeird.

Of course, when I watch it now I'm going to be so concentrated on everyone's eyes.

Just random info: due to screw ups with Orlando Bloom's contacts, Legolas' eyes appear to change between blue and brown. Its weird!!!!!

Not sure about genetics of other races, but in humans the gene for brown eyes are the most dominant, which is why most people have brown eyes. Not sure about how genetics work in elves or hobbits.

I think green/hazel/nature-coloured would make a great deal more sense in wood-elves and the blues and greys would be on high elves. That's how I always kinda saw it. I mean Tolkien said "grey eyes" but I always saw Legolas with green eyes. Maybe I''m nuts... yeah... that's probably it.

Well, as with hair colour, I think the description in Appendix F need not speak for all Eldar of course, and we know it doesn't given certain descriptions. But given that it is nonetheless a very sweeping description I think we must imagine that the usual hair colour of the Eldar was dark, and the usual eye colour grey; and the Eldar being a very large group, this should seemingly translate into thousands (and thousands) of grey-eyed, dark-haired Elves. Edith Tolkien had grey eyes (or so I understand it).

That said, Eldar isn't necessarily as large a group as some might think, because according to The Lord of the Rings at least, the term Eldar does not include the many East-elves of Mirkwood and Lorien, nor any of the Avari, more specifically. Posthumously published texts paint a larger picture here, but technically Tolkien had only published that the Eldar were: the Vanyar* (not named), the Noldor, and the Sindar only -- that is, the West-elves.

__________
*which is why Christopher Tolkien objected to the statement that the Eldar were mostly dark-haired (outside of Finarfin's house), as the Vanyar are Eldar no matter how we slice things.
