Post subject:  Your Favorite LOTR Bad Guys
So......I hope this hasn't been posted elsewhere, but I was just curious. Who is your favorite bad guy in any of the films? Yep you heard me right! Witch King of Angmar, Cave troll, Lurtz, the tumor looking orc in TROTK, Balrog, Shelob, Sauron, Saruman, Grima Wormtongue, the Mouth of Sauron, Gollum (if you consider him a bad guy), or anyone else I missed. ;-)
We love to hate them, they were cast perfectly so we just can't STAND them! (unless they weren't cast because they were computer animated creatures) :erm: anyways I'm getting off topic.

Okay, I'll go first.
Mine would have to be...*drum roll, please*

Shelob. I am terrified of spiders! :hide:

I love Witch King of Angmar, he makes me shiver :) Plus he is most mysterious villain character from the movies.

Agreed. :yes: I really enjoyed the story of the Witch King in The Silmarillion (correct me if I'm wrong, I haven't read the books lately, shame on me :blush: :hide:). And his appearance in LotR was really epic - love his encounter with Gandalf during the battle for Gondor.

Also I'd add Saruman because of his tempting voice. I find this ability of his quite cunning and he uses it very well-measured. :P A true manipulator indeed. But his greed and lust for power failed him and even his voice couldn't save him from the wrath of Sauron.

Saruman is pretty cool in FotR when he 'defeats' Gandalf.


But I wanted to say Sauron as he is supposed to be the chief badass. But I've been thinking about it for a while. He is a bad guy that you never see. You see his Eye. But basically it just looks like a lighthouse most of the time.. and then the Eye itself.. it is a little comical.. I mean I always found the Ring itself the most powerful and scary in the movies. I know it's hard to make a bad guy like Sauron come alive in the movie without disappointing people... But what do you guys think of the way they made Sauron in the movies? I know Sauron's eye is all-seeing and it's really eerie in the book.. but making him look like a lighthouse just didn't make him scary to me.. Opinions?

Interesting... I would go for Saruman, I think. He's sort of the wise wizardy person but he's also rather cool when he's being evil.

I have actually never been able to watch Shelob's scene. It would absolutely terrify me! :P

I know what you mean, Ea. To me, Sauron's eye is creepy, but definitely not as creepy as it's depicted in the book. I thought it looked like a lighthouse too! :P I think the Orcs and all of Sauron's agents were more frightening than Sauron himself.

@Alanna: Yeah, in the book Sauron is more of an ominious.. omni-present.. presence when they get to Mordor.. As a reader you're never completely sure of his powers and how much he can do, which ends up working alright in the book.. but clearly PJ struggled with it. Tolkien only hints at Sauron's powers, like when Frodo 'feels naked to the eye'.

But actually, now we're talking baddies I always thought FotR had the best.. meaning the most scarily scary bad guys. The Nazgûl and the balrog.. the Nazgûl are freaking chasing people.. at night.. in black.. and they're not even living which makes it so much more complicated to kill them.. And the balrog who is just.. umm a little un-happy ball of fire who will pretty much stop at nothing.. except if you happen to blast a bridge underneath it.. but that's dangerous business..

I never thought the orcs or the Uruk hai etc. were all that scary.. too much of PJ's love of horror films shining through there... they were just ugly.. bordering funny at times. :P

Gothmog is also the name of the Lord of the Balrogs, slain by Ecthelion of the Fountain in the battle of Gondolin.
Sadly Ecthelion gets killed too... :'-(

Defenitely the Witch King, because he's like pure evil. And I really like his gloves (you know, the spiky ones).
But Saruman is a good second ;)

i think the big spider come into my nightmares, i more worried about someone lurking in the shadows! Or the single eye staring unblinkingly at you! like it can see into you!

i would go for either the ringwraiths because they are so mysterious and i love the way they screech, it creates so much atmoshere
OR
shelob because she is the perfect monster to be lurking in a dark tunnel...not orcs not a cave troll but a GIANT SPIDER!
