If there is a thread like this already, I apologise to the mods, for I could not find it.
I really want Beren and Luthien to be made into a movie- maybe after the Appendix movie is made... It has so much potential for drama, family strife, love, heroics, etc!
Anyone else feel the same?

I'm not sure I'd be for a Beren/Luthien movie... I mean there are so many things that should be settled for a wide audience that it would took probably half of the movie (or at least one third) to finally be able to get into the Beren/Luthien story!
I'm definitely for something Silmarillionish... Not a movie but a mini-serie maybe... You know like 10 épisodes of one hour, I think it should be neat!
Anyway, who would you see playing the leading role for a Beren/Luthien movie?!

I agree with Nessamelde. There's just so much information, it would be hard to put it into a movie, or understand it.

Well it's a bit much for a film I reckon, like the two above me... I'm all for a Children of Húrin film though.

Yes, a movie would be total suicide according to me! No way to find a director and a producer THAT stupid to just try it!
D'you think there would be enough stuff to put into a Children of Hurin movie? I mean, of course I would love to see that, but I'm not sure that audience would make it a success... Plus it would be bad rated because of the incest thing! No way parents would take their kids watch that! lol!
I feel scepticism even about the Hobbit, to me it seems far less epic than LotR to catch the public attention... Unless they do some GREAT modifications to the original plot (like more batals, more elves (it always catches people! ) and even, why not, a love story! ) and that would totally ruin the whole thing!

I'm not really a fan of the idea of a Beren and Luthien movie either. Sure, their story is interesting and would certainly touch the audience, but I think it'd be really difficult to put some parts of the story into film, like Melian for example

ha.. skeptics!
I think it would be cool. I personaly like BAren and luthian. (me and my sister even made pastries and named them baren and luthien... O_o don't ask me, I don't know why.... you figure it out)
Anyways... to much to put into one move doesn't work for me because I would LOVE to see a really good movie (like LOTR or starwars or somthing_) that had so much info and story in it that it last 5 hours!!! seriously I think that owuld be cool and what better to have it than Barren and Luthien????
Ok, I'm done now. (I'm a bit tiered so don't mind my enthusiastics)

I think it could be done. It might not be the best movie out there as rated by the entire world, but Tolkien fans would enjoy it! I'd love to see this movie made.
A Children of Hurin movie would be cool, too...

Earliest it could ever happen would be 2043..
That's when the copyright runs out on the Silmarillion. Well, on any of Tolkien's works (copyright expires 70 years after the author's death. Or at least in UK law which I think Tolkien's work will be copyrighted under..)
Before then the only way it could happen is if Christopher Tolkien sold the film rights to it and that will never happen..
Even so.. it is nice to dream about it

ah man that is a long time ....
Why do you say it would never happen for him to sell the movie rights, though? has he mentioned something about his intentions?
but yes... nice to dream about it. haha

"Tolkien Jr, described by his biographer as “cantankerous”, is unlikely to allow the film-makers free access to The Silmarillion. He has always been sceptical of Hollywood. Even now relatives are unsure whether he has watched The Lord of the Rings"
That was the first sorce I've found. When I get home I'll try to find some more for you if you want.
Tolkien himself didn't actually want to sell the film rights to LotR and the Hobbit. He had to sell them to pay off a debt.
It's pretty much given that C. Tolkien won't sell the film rights... He's been trying to terminate the film rights of the Hobbit recently...

oh... I see. i wonder why that is?
Don't get me wrong I can completely understand why you would be protective and particular about your work (or that of a relative father etc...)
That is why George Lucas directed starwars himself. But I don't see what would be wrong with selling the rights under the condition that he had the ultimate say on what they could and could not put in the movie.
i would like to see it go into a movie if it were my work but who knows... maybe he just doens't want to deal with the hasle.. *shrugs*
Thanks for info though

Christopher Tolkien seems pretty tough concerning his father's work... He considers it as his heirloom... Can't say if that right or wrong, though I have my own opinion about that!
Maybe JRR's grand-children are more opened about this...
But I keep on saying: a mini-drama could explore much more things and the deep complexity of the Silm..

I can personaly understand him being that way. I am an amature writer myself and if something of mine was ever turned into a movie I would be verry particular...
And yea... a minni series could very easily be better than a movie. For one, as you mentioned, it would be longer and able to encorperate much more of the info.
I just think it would be fun to see the story told in movie form
