*starts to laugh out loud at Galas's conversation with her friend* sorry, that was really funny...
Anyway, good topic! For the first year and a half of my LotR fandom, I was a bit in-your-face about it. I'd talk to eeeeeeeverbody I'd meet about LotR; I taped banners saying "Frodo lives" and "Gandalf for president" to my parka when I went skiing; I wore my LotR shirt and One Ring replica all the time, etc. And then people I thought were my friends were very unsubtle about expressing how dweeby they thought I was. Like...
"I'm taking a class in such-and-such; what's [Arwen] taking a class in, Lord of the Rings? Hahaha...."
Or I'd find out from friends' parents that my friends were annoyed with me for talking about it so much, but they didn't tell me.
So eventually I decided that I wouldn't talk about it to friends who didn't also like it unless they brought it up first. But that got hard, too, because everyone would start spewing facts that I'd known for years, and I'd know that if I joined in, they'd snicker at how much (to them) worthless information I had stored in my brain.
Girl I know: "Did you know that the same guy who played in Lord of the Rings was also in Pirates of the Caribbean??!!?"
Me: "Um...*cough* no comment..."
So I don't bring it up or even talk about it when it comes up much anymore. Somehow it still gets around that I'm an obsessive fan.
People: "Oh, so YOU'RE the one with the web site about the Lord of the Rings movies!"
Me: "Uh...yeah *to self: the books DO exist, ya know...*"
People after visiting site: "Oh my gosh, I didn't have any idea it was this big, wow!"
Me: "Yeah, duh, it's kind of my life..."
*shuts self up*
There's my life LotR story in a not-so-little nutshell.

That was really interesting Arwen.
I think there will always be that people who you shake heads about our love for LotR, but I always think to myself: They don´t understand the beauty and greatness of this story. Poor people, they don´t know what they are missing...

I don't have any friends who like LotR... I don't even know of anyone who has read LotR in my class. I talked one of my friends into reading FotR- that was three months ago. She finished it just yesterday. And it's not that she's a slow reader at all- she's a reading maniac like I am- she didn't like it. When I heard her say it, I just couldn't believe it. How could you not like LotR?? And as for everyone else at my school... yes, they all know that I'm obseessed. And whenever I start talking about it, I get the blank stare. I try not to talk about it so much anymore, but I can't really help it... that's why I love having all of you guys around to talk to!!

Today in school, it was again like that: I made a short comment, including the word "Middle-earth". It was just a joke, nothing serious! And several people were like: Oh man, yeah, we know you're obsessed with it, and the movies were good, but please don't talk about it all the time, so shut up! People are so weird! I mean, I think constantly about things I like and I also have to talk about something that is constantly in my mind.

I never really get to talk about LOTR at school. I get a few comments about my Evanstar necklace and sometimes I talk about things with my Lit teacher because I'm doing a project on it, but even then it's mostly pertaining to the project and not LOTR itself, and that's about it. One girl thought I was insane because I used to be able to quote every line from all three movies.
I only have one friend who really likes LOTR. And I can talk to her about it but that's it. Anyone else just doesn't understand the movies or books so there really isn't any point in my trying to talk to them about it and having to explain eveything for an hour.

The night before last I was at a basketball game with three of my friends, and they started making fun of me relentlessly for being so obsessed with LotR. It got soooooooo annoying, I wanted to kill them. I don't remember how it got brought up... but they have always thought that I'm insane for being so obsessed. I just don't get how they can't love it. Urgh, I can get so annoyed with them.

Wow, I had no idea fellow obsessees had so much trouble! No one knows I like LotR's as much as I do. I mean, I'm extremely quiet in all my classes and have few friends. And those few friends could really care less, so I keep it to myself.
Does this make me a closet LotR freak? Shame on me! LotR pride, y0! XD

I don't tell my friends that I'm a massive LOTR fan.
Obviously my family know because I'm always talking about it and forcing them to watch the ee films. (They love it reli.. they're just aashamed to admit it). I only tell my close friend that Im obsessed because she is too, unfortunately I started with the craze later then she did so when I became obsessed it was like -woopity doo-.
I'm not a very social person so the fact I love LOTR never reli slips out because I plan what I'm saying. *i hate being shy, but I also think its great *

I know exactly what you mean!! I'm a really quiet and shy person too, and so it doesn't get anywhere past my close friends. And they just really found out when they come over to my house and my room is overflowing with everything LotR. And that is, I suppose, definatly a blessing of being shy.

Sometimes I wish I would think about things before I say them... I'm not shy at all. Well, only when I talk to people I don't know, then I feel very insecure. But when I talk to my friends, I often say things that I regret later on. Not that they are stupid or mean, no, but I tell other ppl far to much about myself. And so some of them later look at you like: She's so weird!, just because I told them about, for example, my LotR obsession.

I know what you mean. Sometimes, I can get tom carried away when I meet new people and tell them I really like Tolkien and fantasy and then they won't talk to me anymore, probably thinking I'm weird (which I am not ashamed to say I am). Now, I'm a little more carefull (and a lot more shy too), so only my friends and a few teachers know I'm Tolkien obsessed.
I'm afraid to say I'm quite alone in my obsession though. My friends don't get anything about fantasy (one of my friends even asked me once if Arwen and Frodo were together) so I can't really talk about it with anyone.

Yeah, but I must admit I was a little discouraged when she told me that lol I mean, I thought everyone knew that Arwen was with Aragorn...

I hardly ever bring up my obsession with others... I've just gotten so sick of the smiling and nodding and acting like I'm a lunatic... well, not that I'm NOT one, but that's besides the point...
I tell myself that I'm not shy about it... just that those other people don't deserve to know my deepest loves.
