It's kind of weird how people think of elves in many different ways i.e how they look. So I decided I would look for as many depictions of elves in drawings, illustrations, pictures, movies etc. as possible. Here are my results:

But Santa's elves aren't ....elves.... They're his helpers.... and they don't have anything to do with other kinds of elves.... oh, it's getting complicated, but I mean they don't share the same story...
Dobby isn't an elf.... and some of the creatures on the pictures I'd consider fairies!!

Oh, by the way in Scandinavia we have the wicked elves from the folk tales who dance on the long summer nights driving young men crazy and make them dance till they die, muhahaha, no pointy ears just white clothing!!

Haha, I know, when non-LotR fans think of Elves they think of Santa's Elves. But eh..I think Santa's 'helpers' are a really fake type of Elf to me  Because I think of Elves as LotR Elves. (Let's hope that made sense)

Oh yes, they are Elven maidens who dance upon the meadows or waters in the twilight. I see them all the time

'k i have to admit some of them do look like faeries.........but they categoized them as elves, and Dobby is a house-ELF so I included him........hey I have to please the HP fans!!!!!!! Okay........and I guess you could say Santa's 'helpers' instead of elves........but most people from my calculations (oooooooooooo big word) call them elves. I respect ya'lls opinions anyway....

Wheee, ELVES! Me love Elves.

Anyway, yeah, it's very interesting how some people think of Elves. I was talking to two non-LotR fans (they haven't seen the movies either) and I said "Yeah, there's Elves!" They both stared at me blankly. "Elves??"

Things make me mad now, though, even though it's ridiculous. But I saw the movie Ella Enchanted, and it just...annoyed me...

hmm...it seems like anything with pointy ears is called an elf. :yeahright: i think i would call maybe a couple of those pics fairies, too. they could just be pointy eared fairies!

if you were to ask me 4 or 5 years ago for an example of an elf, i'd probably say "Santa's helpers." but now it's totally "Elrond! Galadriel! Arwen! Legolas!...." my definition has change quite a bit. :-D

Yes, I know Larael Legolas (Can I call you that? lol)
It's is an interesting and mind provoking research you've been doing, and I realized when I typed my last post that I was in fact not replying to your question because you clearly specified that it was other peoples opinions and depictions of elves and NOT LotR elves!!! And the way I replyed was from a LotR or maybe personal point of view so i kinda expected others to react on that!!! But you guys are so nice and good people so you let me get away with it
You are right, I guess there's no 'real' defination on elves but there are many versions, depictions, opinions and so on!!

santa has elfs. LotR has Elves.

santa elfs are weird. they are short with annoyingly high voices and all they do is supervise santa's factories. and did you know there's no land at the north pole?

Tolkien Elves are graceful and elegant. they are wise and mysterious andcan be frightening if they so choose. I like to think of Tolkien Elves as what man would be w/o the Fall. Pure and Perfect (generally).
