It's the same way with dragons. In some cultures, they are seen as evil. In other cultures, they are considered like gods and represent luck or wealth or whatever. :bye2:

It's always been that way, ever since legends were created. Because of the many different cultures in the world, and the billions of independant people, well u can understand when views of things get changed. There are always similarities within the differences though. For example all the different depictions of elves at least look remotly human, they never look like animals. And as for dragons, well they are always considered reptiles, whether they're bad or good. I think that those small changes in legends make our world so much more interesting. I mean wouldn't it be boring if everything was the same? If everyone believed in the same things? I personally believe that things such as elves and dragons are as diverse as humans, coming in many different shapes and sizes. Thats just my view on it

:bye2:

I only just came to this topic today. It's very interesting that there're so many different depictions of them. Tolkien's vision will forever be stuck in my head though.

Did anyone see the hobbit (the animated version)?

Thanduil looks horrible! Almost like a gobin or something.

I have seen a pic of Thranduil in the animated Hobbit and it looks horrific- no wonder Tolkien was so angry about it! He specifically said that Elves were beautiful!!

I really like the rather Nordic elven family. But that is what I think of when I read Tolkien. But it is no secret his elves are somewhat based in the Norse ledgends of the Liosealfar and Docksealfar (my spelling O. N. is terrible...sorry).

I ma not sure at what point in "myth" history that elves and proper faries went from being these awesome beings into a bad cross between a gnome/leperachan/pixie thing.

(I think my avatar has an ok rendering of an urban elf  )

I talk to/annoy some one at school about tLotR through boring lessons and although Elves have come up once or twice, I've never really though about it that they might not have the same image of Elves as me.

*troubled look*
