A Long Time Ago (1978?), I remember going along to an "art-house" cinema to watch Fred Bashki's interpretation of the Lord of The Rings.

I must say I was bitterly disappointed and regretted seeing it. It was a cartoon (not that this is fundamentally flawed in itself!), and had very poor characterisations.

This is in direct contrast to the 11+ hours of Peter Jackson's interpretation, which I thoroughly enjoyed.

Anyone else seen the Bashki version? If so, what did you think of it?

Yes, I completely agree with you. I had the misfortune to see it last year and promptly gave it a "1 star rating". It was appalling and the animation was very bad. The opening sequence where "real people" had been drawn over was pointless and made it even worse. The characters made you depressed just looking at them. Poor Sam! I would hope he was not as stupid in the books. And would Gandalf when placed in danger say "Run for it!". I doubt it. And whatever happened to Treebeard? A walking potato with arms that stuck out in front of him like Frankenstein's monster? The music also sounded like it was a film about D-Day. I have seen it once and I would travel a long way to make sure I don't see it again.

Looks like there were a few people who didn't enjoy it at all.

Found this lengthy critique today:

http://flyingmoose.org/tolksarc/bakshi/bakshi.htm

It's no wonder that the two remaining parts to this animated version of LoTR were never made.

Having said all that, Ralph Bashki was (at the time) regarded as a good, radical animator, so his version was highly anticipated when it was released. This fact alone multiplied my negative feelings towards this movie, as it was such a let down.

Ah, the good 'ol Flying Moose review. :-) I have seen that before! As you say he was regarded as a good animator and the fact that it was LOTR must have really made you anxious to see it...only for you to be let down. I have had that happen to me many times so it's good to know you like PJ's version! :bye2:

Aww. I LOVED those as a kid, but now, they seem very tame.

Oh man, I remember watching Bakashi when I was a kid too! I loved it, only because LotR was my favorite book and that was a visual interpretation of it. However, it was on TV last year and I watched most of it and was suprised how......"interesting" it was...:P The "costumes" what were they wearing!?!? haha ;)

I've heard of Bashki's LotR version and I'm happy to say that I've never seen it and I don't want to see it actually, because I think I'd just explode or anything like that if I saw that someone did somthing like Bashki's version out of the story I like so much

Hmmm. I guess everybody is different. Although the cartoon is closer to the books than the movies. :p

galadriel looked so beautifull in the cartoon version.if they had more confidence and did the fellowship it would have been better than it was.imagine miyazaki doing it!

Hey, very good point! Have Hayao Miyazaki make an anime Lord of the Rings! Cool thought!

I saw it two years ago and I was laughing through out the whole thing...the art was pathetic! I haven't seen the Return of the King though, is it supposed to be good?

I've never seen it and I probably won't. I've only heard negative things about it from other people.

My siblings watch it occasionally, because we find it so bad it's hilarious. Every time we watch it, we laugh until we cry.

They did do a few things alright, but mostly it was pretty bad (in my humble opinion, I might note). I personally liked the animated Return of the King a little better, but that's just me.
