Frodo is one of the toughest characters in LotR. He's not much when it comes to fighting but when it comes to surviving the inevitable he tops it all. He set out with the Ring thinking he wouldn't need to go any farther, that someone else would take on the task instead. After being stabbed by the Morgul blade all he wanted to do was get back home alive. But the next thing we know Frodo has offered to take the Ring to Mordor himself.

He knows that this must end, and he knows that he is the only one to do it. He goes at this task with a rock hard will [though he is unsure of the way] and his mind set that this must be d one.

He has a certain amount of bravery because he has no idea where this journey could take him, even to his death. He knows that he will not come out of this unscathed and unchanged.

Frodo is one of the bravest characters in LotR I think. :)

oh yes I can only agree with ya. I think it's very important that a "small" person did the job, because like Elrond says in the book (don't know the exact quote right now..) when the wise ones can't solve the problem the "small" ones come and save the day and I think it's a vrey important message.
But I'm also fascinated by Frodo's development during the quest, because it shows how much influence evil can have on you and that you have to sacrifice something to save something else (Frodo couldn't live in the Shire anymore after fulfilling his task).

[Psst LadyOfTheWood, try not to make one word posts... we like substance! :) ]

I like your point about Frodo being able to overcome evil despite his stature. Even Isildur, a grown man, could not overcome the power of the Ring. It doesn't really matter how tall you are, as you can still conquer the same thing others can.

Great thread!...mwuahaha *puts Frodo in pocket*

I just love the idea that actally one of the smallest and weakest persons saves Middle-earth. That true heorism has nothing to do with power or social status, but with his courage to go on, even though he's afraid.

I love Frodo too! He inspires me because I'm a relatively small person myself. Frodo may be small, but in the end, everyone on Middle Earth owes their lives to Frodo because of the amazing things he did! Admittedly, he had a little trouble giving up the Ring in the end, but who wouldn't? If you think about it, we all would have been pretty disappointed if he would have just tossed the Ring into Mount Doom without a problem.
I think that no matter who you are, you have to love Frodo in some way. He's amazing.
Great thread! I can't get enough of appreciating Frodo! I'd write more, but I'm being kicked off of my computer. :(

That thought totally struck me offguard! If he had not struggled with that ring and given in like he did in the end, we would never be able to relate to him. Because that is what we do so often....we struggle....we give in. Tolkien knew how to put hiim right in the shoes of the common man!

Frodo is SO like us!...an unconventional hero just like most of us aspire to be. This is what so enduringly attracts me to him. He is not a formidable and death-defying warrior but a weak and very normal civilian like you and me.
It is so cool that the strong and powerful do not have a corner on courage, honor and valor. No matter who we are, we have an equal shot at being a hero.

Hear! Hear! Let the world hear it! Frodo is brave! How many of us are game to do what Frodo did? You mentioned scathing, change for the worse and death. Am I that brave? *shakes head in questioning wonder*

*nods head in agreement* I would never be able to do that. My fear and doubtfullness would get in the way, and I'd never be able to leave my family and friends for something like that. Even if it would decide the fate of the world I think I'd still be much too afraid.
