I saw
Beowulf & Grendel at an art house theatre last week. It's had a very limited release in NZ - this theatre was screening it on DVD rather than 35mm film. I should have remembered that there's usually a reason some films don't get mainstream (or wide) releases ...
Sometimes they just aren't very good films.
Unfortunately, this was the case with
Beowulf.
It has a fine epic story, interesting and capable actors, lovely landscapes and a suitably gritty look about it. But I thought the script could have been a lot better and there were some rather silly ('Hollywood') moments in it.
It also had some good moments, but not enough to make me think better of the film. Oh, and I found some of the dialogue hard to follow. (I knew the basic story before seeing the film but haven't read the poem.)
To summarise, I suppose I'd say it's 'of interest' to those keen on Tolkien, myths, legends, epic sagas, and period pieces. And some of you may enjoy it more than I did - a friend I went to the screening with seemed to like it more than me.
