Post subject:  Into The West versus May It Be

Personally, I think Peter ended the trilogy to positively, especially in the music. The book is much more bittersweet. I think that May It Be, from the Fellowship, would have been the better choice to end the film/trilogy than Into The West, just because of the mood it sets. Anyone agree?

I happen to disagree.. Into The West is the perfect ending for RotK. The melody is so beautiful, powerful and yet sad. But I guess that's just my opinion. It was the perfect ending song for the movie as such!

I just dont find Into The West sad at all, and personally, kinda corney(I just opened up a can of worms, didn't I)

lol nah you didn't.. you're just speaking your mind.

personally I find Into The West extremely sad, especially since they play the score for it during any reference to death in the film which makes it even more sad. lol I sometimes cry when listening to it. But that's just me :-D

I think Into the West is a better ending, cause it's more of an ending song. Wow, that really made no sense. lol I mean, like it says "you have come to journey's end" and it talks about what's going to happen now that the journey is over. While May it Be, to me at least, talks more about something that's ongoing. "may it be you journey on to light that day". I love both songs, I just think that Into the West works better at the end.

I thought Into the West was perfect for the ending - it had such a wistful quality to it and worked really well with the pencil sketches at the end. I also thought that there was a bittersweet quality to the lyrics as well.

Actually, musically, May it Be could also have been a good way to end the trilogy. It has such a lovely melody, and I love the way the Enya sings it.
The problem with May it Be is that the lyrics don't really fit the tone of Return of the King because they speak of darkness having fallen and the journey ahead towards the light.

Very interesting thought though! :-D

Hmm I also happen to disagree. I love both of the songs, but Into the West like ErulissëEnethNîn had said fits Return of the King. I think Into the West is very sad, and the perfect ending song to the movie. But everyone has their opinions. :)

I will have to disagree to that statement. I think using Into the West was better because in the song it talks about Valinor and leaving people you love behind, and thats what they were doing at the end. So, I think it makes perfect sense!!!!! :)

I think both songs are good but May It Be is like a farewell song after they are parted and probably won't see eachother again. it expresses all their friendship and companionship that once was but now is no more

I thought that it might have been better to use May It Be again at the end of ROTK; but after muting the film and listening to both songs over various scenes, inclduing the credits, ( yes i am that..erm..random) I had to agree Into The West worked better. It was/is a bittersweet song. And in a way it carries on the themes layed down in the films. Hope of meeting again, continuing friendship...

Anyway . . . yes, May It Be would be a good ending for the trilogy, but if you swithced the song, then it would be FotR that would be ending positively, and that seems even more inappropriate because they're in the middle of the journey and there's nothing happy about that! But I do agree, May It Be would be a nice ending for the trilogy. Then again, I usually see May It Be as a song Arwen sings to Aragorn - I get that impression from the verses, like she's singing farewell to him before he leaves. :bye2:
