Alright, so tonight I heard Celtic Woman's version of May it Be for the first time (though I'd known it existed for a long while). I will admit I was pretty much disgusted. First of all, you should have seen my face when the first chorus started. The lead singer's elvish pronunciation is just... bad. I can't describe it any way other than that. As an elvish scholar, that annoyed me quite a bit. Also, their version seemed completely... devoid of Middle Earth. I had always kind of imagined Enya's version as being something Galadriel might sing. Celtic Woman's just seemed to lose something.

Of course, I will admit this may be because I'm just an obsessed purist, and I love everything about LotR so much that I will ferociously pick to pieces anything that challenges the original. So I wondered what other LotR fans would think.

well I don't really like that version either. As you already said, her voice is missing something that Enya's voice had. Enya's voice just brings across much more emotion and the atmosphere of the song is portrayed better by Enya as well.
To the pronounciation of Elvish: you can hear that she doesn't know any Elvish and probably is not really interested in the language.
I wouldn't say it was terrible, but it definitely sounds much better when Enya sings it

They are both very good but I like Enya's simply because it's the original and the song suits her voice and style of singing much more.

Celtic Woman's version is good, but I prefer Enya's because her voice suits the song perfectly.

the Elvish bits were somewhat shoddily done...just copying the sounds and not getting the real words right. It sounds like it doesn't mean anything, when in fact it really does. :annoyed:
and Enya's voice just fits the song better. She's got something there that Lisa Kelly doesn't. *shrug*

^Is the singer's name Lisa Kelly? Dude, I have a friend named that. XD

I've heard this version...

...but I don't remember much about it. I guess it didn't leave a big impression. :teehee:

OOoh, am I the only one here who liked it? :P

I've never heard of the singer before and I think she has a very pretty voice, which suits the song well. To my ears, she pronounced the Elvish words just as well, but her tone is different to Enya so the words sound different.

The problem with that track is the musicans. the instruments used and the way it is performed is not a patch on the music for Enya's video.

as a fan of Celtic Woman and Lisa Kelly, I've quite grown used to that version of the song. I think it's ok and has the right to sound a bit different than the original. However, I definitely prefer Enya's over the CW version. It's an interesting interpretation, but the original is almost always the best. that's what I think anyway.

I'm not digusted by it, but it doesn't sound...right. It doesn't make me think of Middle-earth. It makes me think of a singer on Broadway performing in a modern era for a musical similar to Wicked. (I'm not sure why I thought Wicked.)

It's not horrible, but I vastly prefer the Enya version. And the Elvish...please, do better next time.

I'm not too fond of it, either. I really like Celtic Women's songs, but this just feels too slow and it sorta drags. The first verse is ok, but the chorus=no. It lacks that ethereal feel that Enya gives it.

I'd forgotten I started this topic. :teehee:

It's nice to hear other thoughts on this. I think all of us are always going to like Enya's version better simply because of the memories associated with it. I'll never forgetting demanding to sit all the way through the credits when I saw FotR in theaters, and reading all the names as that music played. :-P Or when we finally bought the soundtrack... ah, good memories.

Hmm..I'll admit they're both beautiful, but I still prefer Enya's version.

As much as I like Celtic Woman, I don't associate them with May it Be, like at ALL. Enya's voice fits the song better, and overall is more amazing :D

Hm, I like some of Celtic Woman's stuff, but I think overall Enya is best suited for this song... I love the originals, and when people try to remake them, well they just don't turn out as good.

So sticking with Enya on this one. ;-)

I love Lisa Kelly! I still prefer Enya's version, but Lisa's isn't terrible. And you hav to remember to that David wrote a new arrangement...
