Even though most of the actors in LotR aren't professional singers (with the exception of Billy Boyd, who's in a band), some of them (Viggo, Liv, Miranda) got to sing in the movies. I think this added a lot to the movies, since song is such a big part of Tolkien's LotR. What do you think?

I liked them singing. I usually don't mind actors singing in the movies and they are not professional. The same went with Sweeney Todd.

I think they made a good decision with letting some of the songs be sung by the actual characters and the actors who play them. Especially during the coronation scene: it would have been weird if the song had been sung by anyone else than Aragorn himself.

I really like that they let the actors sing some songs. Like the post above: It would have been wierd if someone else than Viggo sang Aragorns song (besides, I love to hear Viggo's voice... And he gives the song feeling), and the same thing with Eowyns song at Theodreds funeral in TTT and Billy Boyds in RotK. When the characters really sing it in that second, so to speak, it gives a feeling of precense, more than if it would have been a part of the soundtrack.
Liv's song in Houses of Healing is a different matter, since it is a part of the soundtrack and someone else could have sung it. But I'm glad she did, since she sang it beautifully, and in some way it gives a feeling that Arwen is present in Aragorn's mind... or is that just me? :P

I'm also really glad they had some actors sing. They did really good too. Liv Tyler was good in Houses of Healing, her voice fit it perfectly. Viggo Mortensen's voice is just amazing for what he sang. Billy Boyd was just awesome all together and so was Miranda Otto.

It just seemed a lot more real and easy to connect with and it had a lot more feeling whenever you heard these songs sung by the actors or "characters" themselves. It was a lot deeper and intense than if they had just hired professionals to sing everything.

I liked it, especially Aragorn's song at the coronation and Eowyn's lament for Theodred.
Now that 'song' he sings about Luthien which sounds more like mumbling... that wasn't too great. :teehee:

I love that the actors are really singing. I mean, we are IN the world of Middle Earth, and most of the characters are battle-hardened (Aragorn), ethereal elves (Arwen), or just people doing their duty (Eowyn and Pippin)... And in real life, not everyone is a professional singer, so when the characters voices are less than perfect, then it makes it even more real!

Obviously, I adore it! My favorite part was Liv in the houses of healing. I agree with Anduril--it is like Arwen is in Aragorn's mind, as well as the elves being the source of his healing skills!

I totally agree with you in that. And yeah they made a perfect decision by letting the actors sing in the movies.

I absolutely love the songs in which the actors were featured! Aragorn's coronation song never fails to swell my heart with emotion, and I couldn't imagine "The Steward of Gondor" being sung by anyone other than Billy Boyd. Such a powerful scene, with the lyrical narration.
Eowyn's funeral song is also great. I heard it for the first time when I was watching the EEs and it lent a wonderful traditional vibe to the Rohan culture.
