:blink: how did you know that Satu is a finnish word for fairytale? I mean, I'm finnish so I knew that. but I always thought Eärlinde Elensar is my name translated. hmm.. the name generator must be wrong then. oh well, I like Inwenyárë better and Narneth isn't bad either :) thanks very much for letting me know!

Name generators just generate an Elvish-sounding name; they don't actually translate anything.
As for Satu, I looked up the meaning on several places online, and that's what it said. Your profile said you're from Finland, so I figured it was accurate.

thank you very much! :):) I changed my nick to Inwenyárë as you probably can see. Could you translate the name 'Kati' for me.. I think it's origin might be Greek? please

Kati is a Finnish (diminutive or endearing) form of Katariina, which is a Finnish/Estonian form of Katherine, which comes from the Greek Aikaterine. The meaning of that Greek name is debated: it could come from "each of the two", the deific name Hecate (poss. meaning "far off"), "torture", or a Coptic (modern Egyptian) name meaning "my consecration of your name". Whatever its derivation, the Romans decided to claim it came from the Greek word for "pure, clean" (which it didn't), and changed its spelling to fit that.
So, in Quenya, female names attempting a meaning of:
"each of the two": Ilyattië
"far off": Vahaiyë
"torture": Ungwalië
"pure, clean": Poicë or Vaxelórië (without stain)[/b]

my first and middle names translate to lairë eruanna. i quite like it really.
i prefer rohirric to elvish though, so i'm quite happy that my first name is old english, and therefore practically rohirric anyway.

My name is Nicola, but they dont have that so i went with Nicole. It means Victorious among the people. Which in elvish is Turwaithiel. I like it actually, and it sounds cool.

Undomiel means Evenstar which is rendering of "Evening Star"

actually....my name, tindomerel is Daughter of twilight, in the Elvish glossary written by Sir Tolkien himself in Quenya, found in the Sil. text but many people use tindomiel as their own translation of that name as well through some of the not so specific name generators found on the net..not trying to offend anyone just clarifying, so please take no offence.
Definition of Tindomerel, also found in C.O.E's glossary: nightingale (noun) literally: daughter of twilight (poetic)

I think this can be explained through analogy with Tinúviel, Tindomerel, and Undómiel. The first two come from *tindōmiselde, in Sindarin having the -nd- go to -nn- then -n-. The -ō- went to -ú-, the -m- went to -mh- then -v-, the -s- was lenited to -h- and thus disappeared, and the -lde became -ll then -l. Cf. Tindúmhiell > Tinnúviel > Tinúviel in the Etymologies.
However, in Quenya the -s- became -r-; in Quenya in between Common Eldarin and Valinorean Quenya, words with a vowel then s and an unstressed vowel changed the -s- to -z-. This became -r- in Exilic Quenya (of the Ñoldor who went to M-E). So Tindómerel is the direct cognate of Tinúviel, both meaning "Daughter of Twilight".
However, most people are familiar with the ending -iel for "daughter" in both Quenya and Sindarin that seeing -rel from -selde might not be recognizeable.
Also, there's the name Undómiel. Many people (I used to as well) take this to mean 'Daughter of Twilight', from Undómë + -iel. So they would (by analogy) make a similar compound Tindómiel (from Tindóme + -iel). However, if these actually meant 'daughter of twilight', we would get Tindómerel and *Undómerel for reasons cited above.
Undómiel is actually a direct translation of the name Evenstar given to Arwen, from undómë (undómi-) "evening twilight" and él "star". So, a Quenya name Tindómiel could easily exist, but it would instead be from tindómë (tindómi-) "morning twilight" + él "star". This would probably be a name of Galadriel, cf. "You have chosen the Evening [Arwen], but my love is given to the Morning [Galadriel]" in RotK from Gimli to Faramir.

Tyrhael,
I have read through this thread and others which you have posted in and would like to extend my simple congratulations for your thoroughness in replies and your clear, consice but very intelligent help and opinions which are based in facts. It's always wonderful to come across people with such knowledge as yours, we can all learn so much from you. Hopefully my rambling makes sense and thank you for your description and explanations of the various names above. I have always loved all of those gracious ladies' names.
