I'm really confuzzled about languages. Tolkien writes charts and things to help us figure out the alphabet, but whenever I try to translate anything, it makes no sense! I copied down the angerthas and the tengwar the way Tolkien himself says its supposed to be, but then translating his own work makes no sense.

Which of the transcriptions Tolkien made make no sense to you?

The ones written on the maps in the books and along the title pages.

Hmm.. translating requires a basic knowledge of a language and the grammatical structure. Translating letter by letter wouldn't be correct in any language, and Tolkien's languages are even harder to learn because they are far from complete, they are dead languages and well... the creator of the languages died...
But I am sure you will be able to translate anyway... I'm not sure of your exact problem, but I'm sure if you post again, people will be able to help you out!!

If you mean the runes in the Hobbit, those are not Angerthas/Cirth, but before Tolkien used those, and sort of pre-canon... he simply used the Germanic futhark runes then.

As for the runes and tengwar in the title pages of other books, like LotR and the Silmarillion and Unfinished Tales et al., those are written phonetically rather than how they are spelled.

That clears it up a little, but even phonetically it doesn't make that much sense. There were about 4 vowels in a row at one point.
