This is something that's puzzled me recently. Is Anduril actually a typo?
It's supposed to mean "Flame of the West," but I thought that "Dur" was "dark" and "Dun" was "West," in which case, "Flame of the West" would be Andunil, right?
Because as I see it, Anduril would mean "Flame of the Dark" or whatnot.
Somebody want to confirm or deny my understanding of the translation of that name?

Tolkien wrote that it meant "Flame of the West (as a region) not of the Sunset" in Quenya. It's derived from andúnë "west, sunset" (compare Sindarin annûn) and -ril "glitter, brilliance". See the stems RIL and NDÛ in the Etymologies if you have them. As for dûn and dûr, they are Sindarin for "west" and "dark", yes. But the Quenya cognates are andúnë and lóra.
