Post subject: | Khuzdul, the dwarven language |
I have not seen any topic in this section about it, so I thought I´d make one. There is relatively little known about Khuzdul. It was a language created by Aule(just put two points on the e), ment to be used by the dwarfs. I found relatively little about Khuzdul on the internet but here are the few sites that get it properly. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khuzdul http://www.uib.no/people/hnohf/khuzdul.htm ( I used this one very much for words and information about Khuzdul) Some songs in Khuzdul with english translation provided. http://download.wbr.com/lotr3/fotr_anno ... core_2.pdf (just cntr F Khuzdul) And here comes a personal compilation of Khuzdul by me, becouse I thought I´d post it here for the people who would be interested. Well, you have to distinguish between Tolkienian Khuzdul and movie Khuzdul — there simply wasn't enough known about Dwarvish to translate long passages for song lyrics as was asked for in the movies, so David Salo constructed some pseudo-Khuzdul with both construction based on already existing Tolkienian roots, and some inventions. You can read an analysis of movie-Khuzdul by Elhath here. Though most of what you posted in this thread is Tolkien's Khuzdul. (And by the way, "Forn" is a name in a northern Mannish language, possibly that of Dale (or akin to it), that the Dwarves used for their own 'outer' names like Balin, Fundin, etc. which weren't actually Dwarvish.) However, some bits of new information and vocabulary for Khuzdul were published in the latest issue (#17) of the Tolkienian linguistics journal Parma Eldalamberon. I bought a copy, and it arrived, though I have not yet been able to read it as my parents confiscated it. When I have read it, I'll post whatever I find about Khuzdul (if it's not too long to violate copyright) here in this thread. That said, some of what I know already: in PE17, Tolkien translated Tharkûn as "Grey-man" rather than "Staff-man" as in Unfinished Tales. Additionally, the Kh. name for the river Narog (a name Khuzdul in origin that was adapted into Sindarin phonology?) is Naruka or Narâk; the Kh. translation for Nargothrond (instead of Nulukhizidûn > Nulukkhizdîn) is Narukâthan. Additionally, apparently "axe" is _bark_, pl. _baruk_ rather than _burk_, pl. _barâk_, construct pl. _baruk_ as theorized on Ardalambion. Though _Khuzd_ is the singular of _Khazâd_. |
