IPA is rather hard for the layman to understand, though, isn't it?
(And by "layman" I mean me. ) But, it is pretty easy to pick up on. One letter - one sound. Once you've defined what the letter stands for - that's what it stands for! It doesn't change based on context or the history of the word, it's always the same.
