Aya,

I don't know if there is already a topic about names of this is the right place to post.
How did you choose your forum name? Does it have a meaning?
To create my name, I took the name of my daughter, translated it into English and then looked in the namelist on A-U. Thenidiel means faith or true.
My own name is so unusual I couldn't translate it. And I liked the sound of Thenidiel.

Well Aredhel is the daughter of one of my fav Elves in the Silmarillion, Fingolgin! She also happens to be one of my favourites too. "Aredhel" means "Noble Elf" and "Ar-Feiniel" means "White Lady (of the Noldor)".

I hope you don't mind me telling you this but it looks like the words *thenid and *thenin meaning "firm, true, abiding" published in The Lost Road were misread for N thand, thann. This was corrected in Vinyar Tengwar number 46, which looked at a number of entries from Etymologies.

Anyway, in a much later source (later than Etymologies), written after The Lord of the Rings, Tolkien wrote (see Words, Phrases And Passages, base SAT, SATAR): "(...) Q astar (...), faith, loyalty (not belief). S. astor, astorad "loyalty". Cf names Astoron/Astoreth feminine [QN]" JRRT

So here we have Astoreth based on the word astor and the feminine name is actually attested by Tolkien.

I think we can have a new thread for names in the language forum. Or no? :)

Wow... sounds to me like you do a lot of research or know your stuff already.

I am pretty sure a new thread isn't going to hurt at this point. Unless someone wants to search through and dig up the old one.

Hey, first off let me say "Welcome to the Forum!!"

Secondly, love the meaning to the name! :) Thanks for sharing. Do you know much elvish? I can piece bits together using an elvish dictionary but who knows if my grammar is proper.

It's so special name. I call my little kitten Yuri because it's name of the character I like in a comic papa's pizzeria game.
