Hello to you all! I was hoping to get the expertise of those who know Elvish in translating a couple of sentences/phrases. The phrases are "I really wish that I had never met you" and "Does anyone have some extra food to share?" I'm shooting in the dark here, but I'm hoping it's possible that these phrases, once translated into Elvish, could rhyme. If anyone has a suggestion for a variance on either phrase that will help them rhyme in Elvish while keeping the basic idea and intent behind both sentences, I am perfectly open to such suggestions. Thank you very much in advance! |

Hi, I need help with translating a phrase from a song: "The road goes on, ever ever on" I would appreciate of someone could translate it in elvish and spell it out for me with the actual Elvish alphabet. Thank you so much! |

Here's something close to what you're looking for, from Ryszard Derdzinski... http://www.elvish.org/gwaith/roadgoes.htm I won't vouch for its accuracy but I can say that Ryszard has been delving into Tolkien's languages for years. Or let's put it this way, unless Tolkien wrote it (whatever it is) it's Neo-elvish in my book in any case, but I bet Richard can defend his version, at least. Of course even if you accept *i râd ui-renia lim for 'the road goes ever on' (this is an attempt at Grey-elven by the way, not High-elven), then you still need it in the Elvish letters. I can't make them 'appear' in a thread however. Sorry. |

I fail at reading directions. Here is the request from the separate thread I started: Dear Those-who-like-a-challenge, I'm seeking help in making a rough translation of "Project Manager" to Elvish, with no particular flavor in mind. I'm more looking for the runes, so I can make a sign for my cube at work. I know there is no direct translation, so I'm also looking for reasonably poetic equivalents: Herder of Cats, Slayer of Problems, Alchemist of Time and Gold, stuff like that. I thank you in advance for sharing your knowledge. |

Right. So I spent some time digging around in Hisweloke's Sindarin dictionary (http://www.jrrvf.com/hisweloke/sindar/o ... darin.html), and I think I have a start on "Project Manager". I was quite pleased to find the word maetha-, meaning "to manage", but also implying "to fight". That's about perfect. If you take a loose translation as "Manager of those who make the treasures", then you get maetha-car-mîr. Am I stringing that stuff together properly? Thanks for any comments. |

Maybe *Maethor mírdain 'Manager [of] Jewel-smiths' I usually think of maethor as 'warrior', although maetha- 'to handle, treat, manage' does appear in PE17, along with maeth 'management'. The part 'of' is expressed by word order here. |

Using "Tortha-" might be less ambiguous. It means "control". So, it'd make "Controller of Jewel-smiths" - "Torthor mírdain". Does that work? |

Torthor is genderless. You'd have to add -il or -on to make it feminine or masculine. |

Hey, thank you folks for your answers. I didn't think of the "smith" solution there at all. I asked my same question at work and got a couple of answers, they went the same route toward torthor that y'all did. Posting here to see if anyone has any further comment or refinement. First Guy: I think "car-" should follow "mirë", because it will be in the gerund form (a verb used as a noun), and is modified by "treasure". I also think maetha- is specific to "fight" where "matha-" carries the "handler" meaning. Inflecting "matha-" for the active participle we get "mathol". Finally, Sindarin plurals require internal inflections, so "cared" becomes "cerid". The "-rim" ending does not correspond to our "s" plural, but provides additional information. In this case it means " the group of people". mathol-mirëceridrim is what I came up with. Of course once we've left Tolkein's writings, there are many differences of opinion, so I'd be glad to hear from any experts in Sindarin compounds or inflections! Second Guy: Ceredir is the word for maker-of-things; it doesn't change internally with the plural, so it would be ceredirrim. Tolkien doesn't give a noun corresponding to the root matha-, but 'mathor' would be a valid formation. (Sindarin is a lovely combination of irregular and incomplete.) Torthor (from tortha-) is an alternative possibility; it would do away with the double entendre in matha- (feel, stroke); downside is that it seems iron-fisted (wield, control). Existing nouns that may be of interest: nath (web, as different from 'lhing' cobweb, spiderweb); nathron, pl. nethryn (webster, webmaker, weaver); c^ol or malad (gold). So, my thought is that any permutation of these would fit: mathor i m^ir-ceredirrim - handler [of] the treasure-makers torthor i c^ol-nethryn - controller [of] the gold-weavers I am kind of digging nethryn, since I work for a web development company. Any further comments on this one from the Arwen-Undomiel crew? |

This is probably a long shot but... Are there any translations of "lesbian," "gay," or "queer" in Sindarin and/or Quenya? |

Not that I know of. There are gender-specific words for "lover" though. Sindarin: Male lover - Melethron Female lover - Melethril Quenya: male lover - Melindo female lover - Melisse |
