*Keep in mind that I'm not a mathematician and that I don't know exactly what Tolkien had in mind, but I'm guessing both of these scales come pretty close*
Well, last night I was trying to figure out the human equivalent of Pippin's age and I sort of devised a sort of way to tell how old hobbits are in human years and how old we are in hobbit years. The 1.833 is if hobbits' 33 is the same as our 18, the year we consider people grown up. The 1.571 is if you prefer the idea that our 21 is the same as their 33

To find your age in hobbit years, divide it by either 1.833 or 1.571
14 divided by 1.833 is 7.63.
To find out how old a hobbit is, divide their age by 1.833 or 1.571.
28 divided by 1.833 is 15.27

Am I doing this right? I'm 25, but according to this calculation I am only 13.6 hobbit years old... :)
I like this!!

to find your equivalent hobbit age, you'd have to multiply by 1.833 or 1.571 - if our coming of age is 18/21 and the hobbit coming of age is 33, you can see that the hobbit age is higher and always should be. i'm 18, therefore if you take that to be our coming of age, i'm the equivalent of a 33 year old hobbit and you can only get from 18 to 33 by multiplying by 1.833.

14 years old would be the equivalent of a 25 year old hobbit.

25 years old would be the equivalent of a 45 year old hobbit (sorry!).

you're right about dividing to find the equivalent human age for hobbits though.

i don't think that's how tolkien intended it to work anyway - hobbit years are no different to ours, hobbits just live longer. it's more about finding an equivalent than a different age.

Alright, so you multiply by 1.833.. well, I think 45 makes more sense then, although I get your point as well on the longer life of hobbits, Eowyn. I still think it's fun :)

oh, don't get me wrong, i think it's fun too. i'm glad someone bothered to work out what to multiply/divide by (thanks elvishjedipirate) - i've wondered about this for a while, but after A level maths, i wasn't going near numbers again for a while!

Okay, I'm terrible at math.

Wait, no. If you are tryig to figure out how old you are if you were a hobbit, you would [i] divide by 1.833. which is what I'm doing. But we;re both right.
