Quote: A celebration of all things Tolkien inspired!
Announcing the biggest and most exciting event for Tolkien enthusiasts in 2010: Festival in the Shire! This will be the most comprehensive event ever held for the fans of J.R.R. Tolkien, with a conference, a collector’s exposition of original art, rare books and memorabilia as well as a large festival with stalls and entertainment. http://www.festivalintheshire.com/ There's three main events: - The Conference - for serious fans and scholars. Welsh influences in the works of J.R.R. Tolkien. An academic conference held in conjunction with Festival in the Shire, August 13-15, 2010 at Plas Machynlleth in Wales - The Festival in the Shire collector’s exposition is unique in bringing together some of the worlds rarest and most famous items associated with J.R.R. Tolkien and inspired by his work. It will include original art from the books as well as other paintings by the same artists. Exposition attendees will also have an exciting opportunity to meet some of the artists themselves and learn more about their work. Artworks to be on display include those from Ivan Cavini, Roger Garland, Michael Hague, Ruth Lacon, Alan Lee, Angelo Montanini, Jef Murray, Ted Nasmith, Peter Pracownik just to mention a few with many others. The exposition will also showcase rare first editions of Tolkien’s books and other Tolkien memorabilia. Many of these pieces are from private collections and unlikely to be shown again. This comprehensive exposition will give collectors a unique opportunity to view art, rare books and collectibles all in one place. - In addition to the conference and collector’s exposition, Festival in the Shire’s main event is the festival itself! This is a large event with a wide variety of stalls and entertainment. Suitable for all the family, the Festival takes place in the extensive grounds of the Y Plas mansion in Machynlleth. Entertainment will include J.R.R. Tolkien inspired re-enactments, music and other performance art together with Celtic music and a myriad of fantasy related events. It will also offer attendees the opportunity to sample local Welsh food as well as view a variety of Celtic crafts and meet different craftspeople. TED NASMITH IS GOING TO BE THERE!!!! ![]() It's expensive. The conference is is £150 (it's 3 days long!) if booked before the 1st Jan 2010 (£200 on the door) The Collector’s Exposition is £40 per day or £60 on the Saturday or a three day pass can be brought for £100. The Festival admission is £10 on Fri and Sun and £15 on Saturday (they'll go up by £5 in the New Year) and a three day pass is £25. Or there's the VIP £235 pass which will get you into everything for all three days. I'm totally going!!! Going to try and save up for the VIP pass because a return train from home is only £13 each day so is far cheaper than staying there and it's only 1:20 minutes each way on the train. I'm an undergrad studying History and Archaeology at a Welsh Uni. I can totally pass as going as an academic (even though I'll only be 19 ![]() |
