What do you guys think about how LotR is portrayed in the media? Of my numerous *wonderful* experiences, I'm not very pleased. Just recently, my sister was watching some show where a nerdy character was naming topics worthy of discussion, and among them were "How about...the towers of Orthanc and Barad-Dur???" I was repulsed at first, seeing the main character's reaction to be rather negative, but then sorta realized... heh heh, they're recognizing us!!!! so, okay, we get air time, but it still says only nerdy, hygiene-impaired, pocket protector-bearing freaks like LotR. The freaks I agree with, but everything else is off... And I don't like Discovery channel very much. Recently I was minding my buisness in another room when I suddenly heard..."journey to the REAL Middle-Earth!" It that annoying announcer voice. I quickly raced to the nearest TV only to see it was an ad for a documentary about the equator. I was rather annoyed. I later explained this to friends and family members who looked at me like I had popped out of middle-earth myself. (which some may take as a compliment...) Also, I've seen REAL-LIFE HOBBITS!!! As a title for way too many magazine's stories lately. 4-foot-tall people who lived on an island that looked NOTHING like the Shire, populated by those who looked NOTHING like hobbits, and had NO CONNECTION to the One Ring whatsoever do not qualify as hobbits!!! Unless I see a grave marked Gamgee or Baggins, I'm not jumping. I feel like there's blaphemy invloved or something...lol, don't worry, I don't worship LotR or anything. It's just insulting sometimes to see this stuff. So, am I alone or not? Cause if I am, well, then my friends are right when they say I'm insane. |

Hmm, I had the article saved on my computer...oh well can't find it. Anyways, I guess what I'm trying to say is they were nicknamed hobbits because they have a really long scientifical name and "Hobbits" is easier to say then their other name..which I don't remember right now.. |

Has anyone seen or heard what the media has called 8- 12 year olds? TWEENS! Yes tweens. My friend was making a speech on the children of today, and when she mentioned the word tweens i went beserk "a TWEEN is not an 8-12 year old. It is a teenage hobbit in their irrespnsible twenties to thity three which is their coming of age!" |

I've noticed that ^. At least I can report 1 good LotR bit on TV: One of the male figure skaters in the Olympics did a program to LotR music. It was great to watch!

^ Seriously? I never saw that! I've only noticed LotR in the media once, and that's the case with the hobbits/small people. It made me laugh quite a lot, actually. It's also still mentioned in some magazines--for example, I was reading my copy of Empire last month [I sound soooo highbrow  ] and it mentioned Hobbits being part of the army. That made me laugh too They were obviously taking the micky, but I find it comforting that people haven't forgotten about it. Whatever happens, LotR will still be part of my life
And I haven't a clue where that last statement came from.

As for me....I really can't decide to be mad or glad....its really funny as usually I'm not like that about stuff. They were building a nieghborhood across from ours named Rivendell with Shire street and Bree road and I wasn't sure what to do! |

Really? I only saw the guy who did the program to Carmina Burana with about 20 seconds of LotR cues thrown in. (By the way...shouldn't this be in one of the LotR sections? Completely Misc. LotR?) |

The whole representation of LOTR in the media is down to popular culture at the time. They would never have these representations or this "covereage" if the films had never been made. The producers are simply jumping on a band wagon which big money making corparations do with anything that's big at the time such as music, kids tv, computer games etc etc. This is, IMO, the only reason we are hearing about "Real Hobbits" and other such things, because it get people, like us, watching/ reading because we do so love Tolkien's world. As for the geek, what do you expect?! LOTR has lots of information to take in to be fully understood, and anyone who knows lots on anything, fiction or real, will be considered a geek by people who know nothing about the topic in question and cannot interact with that person on the same level. What's funny to us maybe just darn right confusing to someone who just skimed the surface of the Tolkien's world. That's life... |

Todd Eldredge skated to LotR music four years ago in the Salt Lake City Olympics - I don't know of anyone who skated to completely LotR stuff this year, though. |

Thad has nothing to do with real hobbits and it's so, so annoying
