Have you ever met someone, or come across in a book or newspaper, with a name that sounds like it belongs in LotR? There are so many out there, and the Welsh names esp. seem to belong. Tolkien himself seems to have borrowed many names from RL, and some seem to cross over quite well.

EURIG m Welsh
EURWEN f Welsh
FRISO m Frisian doesn't it sound hobbitish? :)
DAZBOG m Slavic Mythology utterly Orcish :bones:

just to name a few

A friend of mine said that Šmigun (Estonian skiier, won two golds in Olympics) sounds LotRish. I don't think so :P

Frode--Norwegian name meaning 'wise'
Elwyn--Welsh, I think it means 'pale brow'
Morwen--Old English, 'morning' or Welsh 'young girl'
There's a lot of lotr-ish names, but I can't think of more right now.

Šmigun somehow reminds me of Smeagol. I suppose it's the Smi/Sme

Morwen is elvish (Quenya I think but I wouldn't bet on it) for Dark Lady. That's what I'm gonna name my daughter if I have one.

I don't know why, but I've always wanted to name a daughter Alatariel or Gwenneth. Of course, to accomplish that, I'll have to marry someone as nerdy as me (which is rare)...oh well. Maybe I'll be able to give my children at least Elvish middle names

I've always thought Rowan is an 'elvish' sounding name. It's my favourite boy's name...and I can't wait to get married and have a son and name him Rowan Henry...gah...I'm silly.

You're not silly
My heart's greatest wish was to have a son called Elijah. Jr
Not that it's my greatest wish any more :erm:

Oh, Vikingmaiden! Rowen is one of my favorite girls' names! I was thinking of using that if I had a daughter. I like it as a boys' name too, with an a.

Rohan, of course, is LotRish. And my very favorite boys' name is Ransom, but I suppose that's Lewisish, not Tolkienish, isn't it?

How about Estelle? :P

I think Estelle sounds a bit elvish :) What do you think about Erika? Does it sound at all Tolkienish :P?

Author:  vikingmaiden [ March 7th, 2006, 11:47 am ]
Post subject:

Estelle almost sounds like a hobbit's name. If I ever have a girl, I'd like to name her Leiana. I guess that could be lotr-ish. Another girl's name that I've heard is Arden. That always reminds me of an elven forest for some reason.

Post subject:

Well, I was thinking Estelle = Estel. :P The pronunciation may be different, however.

Post subject:

I think both sounds a bit Lotr-ish, maybe Estelle more like a hobbit's name and Estel more an elvish :P But come on, what do you think about Erika? I think it maybe sounds a bit Lotr-ish..
