"My hope of helping you, Lady of Rohan, is something I can do here and now, but it will change little of my suffering except for this moment of peace between us. I am sorry for what I have done to your people and your land Lady of Rohan, and I will all that I can to make right what I can, but the many grievous wrongs our people have done to yours, there can be no recompense."

He could see the grief in her eyes, and she looked down and her muddy wet locks stuck to her cheek and hid her face. He looked at her shoulder as the rain drops cleaned the cloth of her dress slightly where they hit before soaking in. They sat there in the rain and mud, and he said to her,

"I will be working to build the pyres and to bury those who lie here, Dunlanding and Rohirrim. And I will be a prisoner of the Rohirrim until such time they find it in their hearts to release me. When that day comes... well I cannot see beyond this day."

He looked about and saw the carnage and a tear ran out of his eye and mingled with the mud on his face. He offered again to help the woman to her feet, but she did not look to him. He sat and finally said,

"If you cannot stand, then you may wish to crawl over there a few paces and use the water in that stream to clean some."

The muddy trickle of the stream had grown with the rain, and there was now a fair amount of clean water running downfrom the highlands and pooling behind the rubble of the wall.

Athilda had no words for the Dunlanding, not now. But as she listened to his words, a deeply-rooted grief for her family, especially her father and brothers, rose up from within her heart. A shaky breath escaped her lips as rain began to fall from the dark, cloudy sky. The cold drops stung like ice as they hit the skin of her face and her one bare arm. A shiver ran down her spine as they sat in the mud, with the patter of the rain as their only source of sound.
The Dunlanding broke the silence with his explanation, and though she could see his offered hand from the corner of her eye, she did not accept it. Instead, she moved onto her hands and gingerly pushed herself up onto her feet, quickly stretching her arms out by her side to gain balance as she began to walk through the mud towards the keep. A pang of guilt touched her heart as she left the man sitting in the mud by himself. She turned around-carefully- and walked back towards the Dunlanding. After a few paces, she stood in front of him, with her hand outstretched towards him.
After she felt his hand in hers, she leaned back slightly as he pulled on her hand, and with the momentum they had, he was able to stand upright, not more than a foot away from her. A nervous breath left her as she took a step back, and when she was at a comfortable distance from him, she noticed his wounded leg.
"You are wounded, sir. If you would, go back to the keep once your duties are done and there I will tend to your leg."
It was then that she turned and made her way back to the keep.
Once she had made her way into the keep, Athilda walked quickly to the inner chambers to check on Dunhama.
The soldier who guarded the door to the chambers nodded at her to enter, but once she crossed the threshold and surveyed the vast amount of wounded in the small room, she saw not the one she sought. Her brows creased together in concern and confusion. She turned and addressed the guard.
"Sir, did you see a man with a head wound enter here? He has shoulder length brown hair and a scraggly beard and is not much older than I. He should be in here, but I do not see him. Has the Lady Eowyn taken him somewhere else?"

Wulgov sat as the lady managed to stand on her own, refusing his help. He sat silent, watching her as she walked away into the distance, trying to clean her hair and face with the falling rain as she headed up the stair and into the keep. He watched the door after it shut.

”Hey! You! Get to Work!”

shouted a Rohirrim soldier as he walked up to him. Wulgov struggled but got up to his feet. The soldier said,

”Go and tend your own. We will take our kin to the barrows and lay them to rest.”

“We will need oil. Together my kin died here, together they will burn here. It is our way.”

Wulgov said. The soldier nodded and said,

”You and your kin can prepare them. We will find oil for you.”

Wulgov nodded and with some other Dunlanding prisoners, set to carrying his dead kin to a place where their pyre would be lit.

The guard looked in the room and turned to her, saying,

”All the Rohirrim wounded have been brought in here. You see there is little room left, but I think most who lived have been brought in. Any Dunlanding scum that wasn’t completely killed have been taken to the courtyard on the roof.”

Lady Eowyn saw her by the door and said,

"Athilda, we need your help. Clean up the best you can and go see what you can do with those in the courtyard.”

Dunhama awoke with rain in his face. He had the worst headache, but he managed to pull himself up to be able to lean against the wall. He looked at his feet and he could move them, and he moved his arms about. The wounded one, which was the same one that had gotten the infected wound, was painful but it seemed to work. He sighed and looked about at the men laying about. One man tended to some, while others would take the ones who dies away. Dunhama sighed, thinking that seeing Athilda was all a dream. He took off the chain with the lock of hair, and he looked at it and held it out for the rain to wash it clean of mud and blood.

A shattered breath escaped Athildas' lips after what the guard told her. Dunlanding scum....is that how he was being treated? As one of the enemy? Athilda was about to open her mouth and let the guard know what she thought of that, when a voice called her. She turned to find the Lady Eowyn instructing her to go to the courtyard.
"Yes, my Lady." Her voice was laced with frustration and shock as she spoke.
She swiftly turned on her heels and ran up to the courtyard. Once there, she was appalled at the conditions. These men, though they were the enemy and prisoners, were being left out in the elements with no one to properly care for them. The sight angered her and she knew that she was going to have to speak with the King once this was-her thoughts were interrupted when she saw Dunhama leaning against the wall.
"Oh, no!"
She exclaimed as she rushed over to him and inspected his wounds.
"Dunhama, I....I'm so sorry I couldn't come sooner...I...well, I fell in the mud and I..."She let her thought trail off, for she did not want to mention meeting the Dunlanding to him just yet.
"How do you feel? Have you a headache? Are you thirsty?" With mud still dripping off her hair and clothes, Athilda began to take out the herbs she carried with her, but when she reached for her clean strips of cloth in her bag, she saw them soaked and muddied. She shook her head and began to fume.
"Dunhama, can you walk? We need to get you down to the inner quarters so you don't die from exposure. Come, I'll help you." She said as she wrapped his good arm around her shoulders, then wrapped her arm about his waist and stood together. As they made their way down to the inner quarter, she could hear echoes of complaints from the Dunlandings who were still out in the open.
"We are almost there." Athilda reassured him, and surely after a few minutes, they made their way to the quarters. But they were immediately denied access.
Athilda furrowed her brows in anger and gave the guard a cold hard stare.
"How dare you deny access to health to one of the servants in the Kings' household! Give him entrance, or I will report you to the King himself!"

Hearing Athilda’s words and seeing the fire in her eyes, guard swallowed and looked about to break away from her burning gaze. When he drew up the courage to again look her in the eyes, he bowed slightly as he reluctantly stepped aside to allow them access. Dunhama shook off the daze he was in as Athilda helped him in and looked for somewhere, and finally said

”I thank thee Lady Athilda for finding me. Yes, my head is throbbing, and my memory is vague of things recent. I have this still, and I am able to return it to you.”

The hand of his wounded arm still gripped the lock of her hair and raised it up slightly as they stepped along to an open place.

Athilda nodded at the guard then walked in and looked for an empty spot where he could lay. After a few short moments, she led him to the corner of the room and as she helped him lay down, she shushed him.
"It's alright. Will you keep it for me while I tend to you?"
As she spoke, she closed his hand back over her lock of hair and smiled. A beat passed between them before she quickly began to work on cleaning and wrapping the wound on his head. Once she was satisfied with the head dressing, she gently picked up his arm and laid it in her lap, then cleaned the wound with water and stitched the wound closed.

Kano sat for quite some time, refusing service from the healers and giving precedence to those more grievously injured. As he waited he tended to his own wounds as best he could. Getting his boots and leg armor off was a task in and of itself! A painful one, too. Once it was off he set about to cleaning his wounds. If he thought removing his outerwear was painful, that thought all but faded. He would have loved to feel such pain again in lieu of his current hurt. He had nearly finished cleaning his wounds when he heard a comotion at the entrance way. He looked up and saw Athilda helping Dunham into the area. She looked none too happy, either. He wondered what had gone on. At least they were both alive, he could see that much and was happy of it.

He looked up at the large black horse that atill stood over by him. He thought to go greet his friends but even to stand long enough to climb on the horse seemed too painful a task at this point. Looking over at them it seemed they could use some time for the two of them anyways.

A short while later a healer approached. "I'm alright," Kano insisted before she even said anything.

She glared at him. "I know, lad... I'm the same one you told that too the last three times. All the major wounds have been tended or are being tended too. Now... let me have a look at those legs." Kano stuck his legs out straight, ever so slowly. He tried not to but he couldn't help but wince a little at the pain. "Well... not the worst I've seen but certainly not the best."

"How long until I will be walking again?"

"Oh the wounds will heal," she countered. "I was talking about your job cleaning your own wounds."

Kano grinnes as did the healer and she began work on his legs.

Dunhama fliched at the first touch of his arm wound, but the cleaning made it feel better. He clutched the hair lock while Athilda gently stitched his wound and looked at the side of her face. He said softly into her ear as she worked,

”I will keep it for thee until you wish it back. It has given me strength and carried me far in such a short time. It seemed so long ago that we parted in the hall, yet, it had been only a day.”

He thought back to that moment and all the things he wanted to say to her then, when it seemed their world would come crashing down all around them. But now they sat here in victory, though he doubted anyone still living could testify to what he had done in the battle. He wished for no renown for himself though. He turned his eyes from Athilda and looked out across the inner quarters. He looked at the far wall and beyond it. His innocence of childhood died the night before. When he awoke in the courtyard, he knew that he had killed, and he saw killing, and the sounds and the screams would not leave him.

Dunhama?”

Lost in his stare and internal thoughts, he didn’t realize that Athilda had finished and looked up at him. She could see Dunhama staring a thousand leagues away. Dunhama shook his head slightly but quickly as he blinked his eyes. He looked at Athilda, the woman he loved, and smiled.

”Thank You.”

He said as tears welled up in his eyes.

Athilda glanced down at Dunhama as he spoke softly of his promise and the strength it gave him. What he said gave her hope for the future, for their future. She found herself daydreaming as she continued stitching up his arm, and when she finished, she looked down at him to speak of her dreams when she saw an expression of remorse and loss in his eyes.
"Dunhama?"
She spoke his name tenderly as she entwined her fingers with his and with a gentle touch rested her other hand on the side of his neck. As she looked into his teary eyes, she leaned over and kissed him lightly on the forehead. As she pulled away, she met his gaze and spoke softly.
"Though I may not be able to restore you completely, I long to help you and care for you. You have gone through much...you have seen things a man such as yourself should not see...but just know that I am here, and I will take care of you, my love."
A small smile found itself on her lips as she looked compassionately into his eyes.

The feeling of Athilda’s lips upon his forehead and hearing her soft caring voice brought comfort with her words. Yet He could not hold back. He leaned into Athilda and wrapped his arms around her, burying his face into her hair and cried. Everything he had tried to keep inside burst out of him then. Athilda held him and comforted him through the minutes it took before he started to settle. When he finally picked his head up off her shoulder, his eyes were wet and red, but he took a deep breath as the visions, thoughts and memories of the last day since he went to war was shut away into the depths of his mind. He piled the thoughts and memories of his time since meeting Ayhilda at Meduseld before it, and that of all his dreams and good memories. He found his hand rubbing gently Athilda’s arm, feeling the softness of the sleeve of her tattered dress. He said in a choked voice that pushed away the last of his cry,

”Maybe with this over, there may be a chance of that dream to travel will come? I will hold to that hope, even if my gut tells me that war in our time is not over.”

Dunhama then thought he caught sight of a familiar face across the way. He said,

”Is that Kano over there getting his leg treated? We should go see him. It looks like he can’t walk.”

Athilda looked over to where Dunhama was pointing.

==================================

Wulgov worked into the twilight as the rain finally stopped. He could see a few stars breaking through the fast-moving clouds. With the arrival of some siege oil, he and other dunlandings covered the pyre as best they could, and with a torch handed to him by the Rohirrim soldier, Wulgov set it alight. The Dunlandings ringed the pyre, and they sang a dirge in their native tongue that went on and on until the fires faded. When they had finished, the Rohirrim soldier said,

”By order of Theoden King, those who have wounds are to go to the high courtyard for treatment with these guards.”

He pointed to his right.

”If you are not wounded, then go with these guards and they will take you to where you can rest for the night.”

Wulgov hesitated, then remembered the shooting pain in his right leg. He decided to walk over with a few men who were then escorted to the courtyard.

Kano winced and tried in vain to hold back the tear drops in his eyes as the healer stitched and tended his legs. He didn't "cry" exactily... or at least that is what he would have said, but the pain was enough that his eyes welled up and watered. He tried to think of something else but that was a hard task to do given the circumstances. He almost felt like the tending hurt worse than the getting injured! He wasn't high on adrenaline anymore, though... so he felt every nerve, every stitch, every movement, and then some.

Finally, once the healer was finished with his legs she looked him over more thoroughly. "By the stars, boy... why didn't you say anything about your side?!"

"My what?" Kano asked. He looked down to see a blood soaked spot on his outer leather armor. "I don't know what happened..."

"You have an arrow in you!" She announced with a sardonic tone.

Kano scowled and looked down. Sure enough he did... apparently he had been shot and the arrow broke, leaving the tip and a short bit of the shaft. His body ached everywhere and he guessed he had not noticed it. Upon closer inspection it was revealed that his armor took the brunt of the impact and the tip had only lightly penatrated his flesh. It was far less critical than it first seemed.

As the healer helped him woth the last few bandages he looked back over, catching Dunham look over to him. He waved and nodded, glad to see they were both doing alright... for the most part. They did look rather shook up and Dunham had seen better days, but all would recover with time he figured.

Athilda held Dunhama and gently rocked him as he cried. Once he lifted his head and caught her eyes, she smiled and nodded.
"Aye, I hope that is something we may look forward to in the near future."
She blinked then looked up and followed Dunhamas pointed finger to where Kano sat. He looked like he was in pain. Athilda nodded at Dunhamas suggestion, then stood and helped Dunhama to stand. The two of them walked over and greeted Kano.

Dunhama got dizzy when they stood, but after a moment with Athilda holding him, they walked over to where Kan was. He held on to Athilda and said,

”Kano, it lightens me to see you alive! You look rough…. “

Dunhama leaned into Athilda trying to steady himself. She held him and kept him from falling, looking at him with concern. Dunhama nodded that he was all right. He looked at Athilda and then back to Kano and said,

”Once you get fixed up, maybe we can all go find somewhere to maybe clean up and rest and talk?”

As he said that, a messenger came in and said,

”Welcome Theoden King!”

The King walked into the room and looked about at the wounded Rohirrim. A soldier laying near the back, called out,

”Hail Theoden King!”

Soon others called out the same. Dunhama smiled and did likewise!

Athilda quickly placed her hand on Dunhamas chest to steady him as he leaned into her, then looked up at him with obvious concern. She was about to address him when she was interrupted by a solider calling out to welcome the Kings' entrance. As she watched the King enter, she dipped her head and quietly repeated the words that were called out.
As the King looked around the room, Athilda couldn't help but feel bitter towards her King. He was the one who had called all those boys and elderly men to arms, and now, mothers were left sonless, and wives were left without husbands. Childhood innocence was lost....all for the sake of war.
A breath escaped her lips as she looked up at Dunhama.
How could he follow King Theoden so willingly into battle when he knew that he would loose so much?

The healer was just finishing up with Kano when Dunham and Athilda arrived.

Kano nodded to their assesment. Rough he was indeed. The ride through the uruk army had left his legs beaten and cut as he was nor skilled enough to block many of the swords swung at him. Thankfully his tall steed had kept him out of reach for any vitat wounds to be dealt.

"I would like that," he said to Dunham's suggestion.

The conversation was cut short as the entrance of the King was announced. Kano started to stand, but the pain would not permit it. He echoed the call himself, "Hail, Theoden King!"

Dunhama swallowed as the cheering died down. He felt Athilda tense with the praise. He looked at her face and she seemed grim. He squeezed her hand. The King too looked grim. He said in a sad voice,

”We have won the day, but have paid a heavy price. Rest as well as you can this night, for the morning will come ever too soon.”

He turned and left, and Dunhama asked Athilda in a whisper,

"What did he mean by that I wonder."

Closing his eyes to push back a demon, he opened them again and said,

”I think I need some air. I’m going to try and go to the courtyard.”

He looked at Kano and Athilda as he steadied himself. he wondered if Kano could walk, but he was still having troubles of his own.
