(No worries. I have actually been rather busy lately as well. A lot going on around our place roght now.)

Kano headed out, offering Gaelrin a hand to help her as she walked if she desired the help. Once they were outside he found a sword from some nearby equipment. He handed the sword to Gaelrin and then took a moment as a subtle and fleeting sense if sadness flashed across his eyes.

"I pray you never need to use this... but better ready and unused than needy and lacking."

Gaelrin gingerly accepted his outstretched hand as they walked outside into the cool evening, with nothing but the stars and moon above them as light. She took the sword from Kano and was startled by how heavy it was; but she held it aloft and nodded.
"Aye, I would rather die defending my brother and my kin with one than die helpless and yielding."
Her eyes glossed over at that very somber thought, but she pushed it away and looked up at Kano, waiting for his instruction.

Kano gave a nod and and took a fighting stance. "First things first, I guess." He stepped to the side. "Lets work on the basic blocking positions and footwork."

He ran through the angle and tilt of the sword for blocking attacks from each direction, then gave her the basics of the footwork. He wasn't a professional trainer by any means but he knew enough to keep himself alive... so far.

Gaelrin nodded slightly then copied Kano's fighting stance as well as everything else he taught her. She was a fast learner and was able to execute the basic moves he showed her with precision and relative ease. But after a while, she found that her ankles were beginning to scream in pain; during a break, she carefully walked over to a bench and sat down, resting the sword on the ground.
While she caught her breath, she looked up at Kano with awe.
"You know, I think it's very brave of you to have fought alongside my father and the other soldiers."

(OOC: No worries Melanie. Things been a bit hectic in life here as well, and I haven't been deep into writing tales here either. Thinking the muse has returned though.)

Dunhama ran his fingers through her hair as he looked at her, closing his eyes at her words. He then took Athilda's wine glass and sat it down with his, and he wrapped his arms about her and kissed her neck.

"Let us walk some this night before we part. I think I see Kan and Gaelrin down there working with swords."

Turning and taking her arm, they walked around the outer court to the track that led down to where Gaelrin and Kan worked. Dunhama and Athilda paused in the shadow of the Hall, watching the two move in the moonlight. Dunhama leaned toward Athilda and said in a soft whisper,

"They are doing well in their healing. Look how they both work with their injuries to make good moves!"

Dunhama paused. The thought of him not being there when Athilda was attacked passed through his mind. He looked at Athilda's cheek as she watched Kan and Gaelrin, and he considered the fate of his mother at the hands of the Dunlandings. Should the armies of Mordor come this far, then the armies of Gondor and Rohan would have been destroyed. There would be little to stand in the way of them. He swallowed as he saw her deep in thought. He said in a shaky whisper,

"What of you my love. What of your skill with a blade? You are by nature a healer, and your knife is skillfully used in that measure. But we know what can happen..."

Dunhama swallowed as the sound of Kan & Gaelrin's blades could be heard.

Athilda smiled as and closed her eyes as Dunhama kissed her neck, all she could think about was the fact that this time tomorrow, she would be his wife. The thought warmed her heart, and as she walked beside him, she knew that everything would be alright. She was safe with him, and always would be.
As they stood watching Kano and Gaelrin spar, she wondered what life would have been like if all was right in the world. If the evils of Mordor were gone, Gaelrin and her brother would have not lost both parents. A sigh escaped her lips as her mind began to relive the horrors of the journey to Helm's Deep, but her attention was brought back to Dunhama as he inquired about her skill with the sword. She could see that his mind was laden with worry and fear, and unfortunately her answer wouldn't ease that.
"I am afraid that I have no skill with the sword, save for my knife skills. But that I only use to heal people with. "

Dunhama turned and stood in front of Athilda and took both her hands into his. He looked solemnly into her eyes and after a silent pause, he said,

"It is one of your beautiful qualities Athilda. You give life and sacrifice yourself to help others. Your blade is a life-giver, not a life taker, and it will always be. Yet promise me this my dear wife to be, should all fail and the darkness comes, and you have saved all you could save, and the final destruction comes, be willing to take one life..."

A tear rolled down his cheek as he stroked his finger over the inside of her wrist. Athilda swallowed as she looked to him. Dunhama shook his head and turned again to watch Gaelrin and Kan. She would be valiant should it come to pass. He tried to push the dark thoughts from his mind. He said to her,

"Should you wish to learn the wielding of a sword, I can show you. But my heart tells me you will hold true and not kill, and will live to see the days ahead, knowing sword skill or not."

He wiped his cheek and turned again to Athilda and smiled. It was nearing the midnight hour and the day of their wedding was nearly upon them.

Kano sheathed his sword as they paused for a break. He would not say as much but his injuries were hurting him as well. He hobbled over to sit and looked up at the night sky. It seemed a calm and peaceful night. He looked up as Gaelrin spoke of his bravery, then looked to hisnfeet. "I did what I had to do," he said softly. "Nothing more."

Rightfully he felt that he did not enough. He felt he owed more to these people whom his kin had ravaged. With that goal in mind he would contimue to serve in whatever capacity he might be able. His mind floated back to Eomer after the battle of Helms Deep.

"Perhaps after we get the basics of ground play learned we could move to mounted combat," he suggested. "I feel it would serve us both generously if we knew well how to vanquish foes from the back of a sturdy war steed."

Athilda gazed into Dunhamas' eyes with concern for she could see the strain and worry in his eyes. Her heart suddenly fell at the thought of the destruction of man, and although she wanted to stop his speech, she knew that what he said held truth.
Her brows knit together and she swallowed nervously, watching her soon to be husband as he watched Kano and Gaelrin.
"My love...."
She muttered as he turned back to her. Without warning, she wrapped her arms around his neck and kissed him gently but passionately.
"I promise you that if such a day of destruction comes I will do as you say. I would follow you to the end of days, Dunhama. No...past the end of days.....for you are my heart's love."
She said tenderly as she pulled away for a moment, but before placing her lips on his again, she added something else.
"Perhaps after tomorrow you can teach me some skill with the sword. For now I wish to revel with you in the joy of becoming your wife."

----------------------------------------------------------------
Gaelrin lowered her gaze and sat in silence as the thoughts of her parents bombarded her. She felt tears begin to form and they almost spilled out onto her cheeks, but she forced herself not to cry. She had done enough crying. Now she needed to learn how to fight so that she could protect those she loved.
A sigh escaped her lips as she raised her gaze to meet his.
"Aye, I think that would serve us very well. But I would still like to learn more advanced ground play, that way I could wouldn't have a disadvantage."

"Aye, well said," Kano replied. He looked at her and even in the moonlight he could tell the sorrow on her face. There was more than sorrow, though. There was strength and beauty. He gently placed a hand on Gaelrin's shoulder. "Are you alright?" After the fact he thought it a foolish question but he seemed to lack another way to express the fact that he was concerned for her.

It was then he looked up and in the distance noticed Dunham and Athilda.

Gaelrin blinked and suddenly lowered her gaze, for fear that those tears would spill over and show how she was truly feeling.
"I...am...." She said somewhat confidently, looking back into his eyes, but she lowered her gaze again and muttered quietly.
"I'm not..."

Kano sighed, wishing he could do something to help. "I'm sorry... I- I wish there were something I could do to help. I know there isn't. I just... you know... wish I wasn't helpless when someone I care about is in need."

Dunhama smiled, pushing away the dark thoughts. Her kiss brought him back to the beauty of this night, and the day ahead.

"Perhaps tomorrow we enjoy our day and the beginning of our union my love. For we will be together forever beyond all days."

He returned her kiss gently as he shifted his weight from one side to another. He held her close and after some time, he whispered,

"The revelry will likely go on into the night, but I am weary from this long day, as you must be. May I walk you to where you will sleep this night?"

Dunhama held back a yawn as he looked into Athilda's eyes. The night carried the din of revelry in the Great Hall, and the slight murmur of Gaelrin and Kan as they stood talking. He knew he would have to report in to the barracks where the soldiers would be, and he considered what he would wear the next day. He did not wish this peaceful night to end, but the sooner it did, the sooner he could call Athilda his wife.

Wulgov was relieved of his duties and he wandered about Edoras. He had found a place to sit and watch and listen and think. The gala in the Hall was simmering, with cheers going up now and again. It was in one of the quieter moments he could hear words spoken. The two young folk with the injured legs spoke softly to each other, but it was a scent of smoke and a giggling he heard from the other way that drew his attention. He quietly went around the corner and found straw bales stacked oddly. He slipped around one to find Grihias and a girl maybe of thirteen years tucked in an alcove in the straw, sitting there. At Wulgov's appearance, the girl blinked and giggled and waved her hand to disperse the smoke while Grihias tensed up, trying to hide the pipe. Wulgov reached over and grabbed it, and said,

" I see you pilfered one of the halfling's smoke. I think you should return this before trouble starts."

Grihias exclaimed as he stood,

"I did not pilfer it, I found it! The halfling dropped the pouch under the table he was dancing on. He spilled beer on me while I was fetching it."

Wulgov got the two to stand before him, and he said,

"Well, as much as I would like a smoke, I think you two need to go back in there and return it, for you know who the rightful owner is. Do not be a thief, but be a proper gentleman."

Grihias scowled, but he nodded. He turned to the girl and said,

"M'Lady, would you like to accompany me while I return that which the halfling lost?"

"Sure good sir!"

She said with a grin. Grihias took her arm, and even though she was a head taller than he, Grihias walked in a stately manner escorting her to the doors of the great hall. Once inside, they looked at the mess and mayhem. He whispered to her,

"I'll drop this by the halfling, then see what else I may find."

The girl nodded as Grihias stepped around to where the halflings sat. He could see that one was looking for his smoking kit while the other took long draws on his pipe and taunted the other by blowing smoke rings at him. Grihias stepped up to him and said,

"Pardon me sir, but I found this under the table. Is it what you look for?"

"Why yes lad, thank you!"

Pippen said as he opened it and got his pipe out and loaded it. He looked sidelong at the lad, for the warm bowl told him that the lad had tried smoking. He leaned over as he lit up, saying to Merry,

"How old were you when you first tried pipeweed?"

"Twelve, and I got caught and was told it would stunt my growth."

Merry answered. Pip took a long draw from his pipe and said as he exhaled,

"No worry about that, at least not after Fangorn."

Meanwhile Grihias went around and collect the half drank, unspilled flagons. When he had two full ones, he returned to the girl he met. He said,

"It may be safer to sit here in the corner. That watchman outside will catch us again should we go out."

The two sat and leaned against the wall, hidden by the nearby empty table. The two tapped flagons and drank...

Gaelrin closed her eyes tightly and forced herself to focus on the sound of Kano's voice. Her eyes opened after he finished and she raised her gaze to meet his.
"You are not doing nothing, Kano....you are here with me...and....for me, that is enough. You...you don't need to do anything more."
The corner of her mouth tilted up as she blushed, but she didn't look away.
"I have to be strong, Kano. And I am glad that I have you as a...friend...for I feel that I can do more with you by my side."

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Athilda closed her eyes and leaned her head lightly into his cheek as he whispered into her ear. As if the mere mention had triggered it, or if it was the nearness of him she did not know, but all she knew was that she began to feel weary.
A sigh escaped her lips and she pulled away from him to gaze up into his handsome, deep eyes.
"Aye, you may, my love."
She answered softly before wrapping her arm around his and walking with him to her chambers.

The chill of the breath of Snowbourne drifted down over Edoras as Dunhama and Athilda started to walk. They leaned close and Dunhama threw his cloak out and around them to ward off the icy breeze. They walked back to the hall silently thinking of the day and days ahead when their lives together would begin. Dunhama looked at Athilda as the walked and if he could love this woman any more, he did not know how it would be possible. Too soon they came to her door, and Athilda turned and faced him. A sigh slipped from Dunhama as he knew he would have to say goodnight to his love. They hugged tightly, and Dunhama kissed her long and slow. Athilda looked at him as she paused stepping away. Dunhama wanted the next day to come so badly, for this time tomorrow, he would not have to turn away and leave her alone. Still, he could not take his eyes off of her. He was frozen in her presence...

Kano smiled, "Thank you. That means a great deal to me... your friendship." He looked at the ground to his feet. "Perhaps in time that friendship can grow to more." He dared to add.
