Kano ran along side his new comrades and only glanced at the rider and warg fighting on the hill. His face, all the same, contorted. Without even looking he knew what had happened. He pushed the thought out of his mind and the memories it conjured. At long last they found Lady Eowyn, who promptly instructed them to help the other hurry and flee to Helms Deep. Kano, himself, did not know the way. So, he drew his very short sword, just in case... and set about taking a load from a heavily burdened middle aged women who seemed to be limping a little.

"Here, let me lighten your load," he offered. "The Lady Eowyn says we must hurry and flee to Helms Deep. We can manage to take only what is most important."

She handed him a few bags of food, dropped a few cooking utensils, and carried a small bag of food and a large canteen of water herself. Kano took them and watched the women run with all speed, the sight of the fear in her eyes burnt into his mind and at it's memorizing yet frightening image he stood still for a long moment. "Mother..." he mumbled the word under his breath. "Those eyes..." He closed his own eyes and felt as though he was spinning for a moment. A bump from a passing individual brought him too and he looked around to re-locate Dunham and Athilda.

There was no time to treat her. Instead, as the soldiers set forth a rearguard, the people started moving rather quickly. This was going to be hard to do. Dunhama saw Kano help relieve someone of unneeded possessions, and looked around for Athilda and not seeing her. Dunhama looked at the girl and said,

"We need to move now. This will not be comfortable."

He lifted her and put her over his shoulder and with the mother and boy, started to move with the people. They had to make their way up over the next rise. Dunhama wished he still had the horse and cart now....He looked around for Athilda again, worried as he huffed one step after another.

(Sorry, I think I'm posting too much.)

Kano spotted Dunham, helping a young women with an injured ankle. He hurried over to him. "Can you manage?" he asked Dunham. He glanced around. "Is there nothing left for her to ride on?" He glanced back at the wagon, now wishing it were still working. Several Injured soldiers could be seen around. A few were wounded bad enough they retreated from the fight in hopes to live to fight another day. Most, however, fought on in spite of injury.

(Eh, no worries. Usually that just means you are enjoying the RP. Which is always a good thing.)

After receiving instructions from Lady Eowyn, Athilda quickly ran over to help an elderly woman and her husband carry what little they owned. As she ran with the couple, she heard crying. But it wasn't just anyone crying...it was a small child. Her face contorted to worry and shock as she saw the mother of the child collapsed on the ground. Moved with compassion for the child and mother, Athilda sprinted to help the two. When she kneeled down, she breathed a sigh of relief as she saw the mothers chest move up and down. But it was slow. The little girl was still crying in fear, so Athilda spoke quietly to her and placed a hand reassuringly on the girls shoulder. The little girl then opened her arms and held onto Athildas arm.
As she held the little girl, Athilda glanced around, searching for Dunahama or Kano.
"Dunhama! Kano?!"

Hearing Kano ask if he could manage carrying the girl, Dunhama didn't say anything, just nodded and put his thump up as hekept his momentum going up the slope. Kano nodded and looked about at the chaos. Fortunately, but for a few of the warg-riders getting through the horsemen picket, they were taken down by the foot-soldiers.

One orc who had his warg killed from under him, was stealthy enough to crawl behind a rock outcropping on the ridge, and there he started to loose arrows down into the crowd of people. The first arrow found its mark in the back of a young mother carrying her little child, and she fell. Dunhama was running up toward where she lay when he saw Athilda come to her side. He need to stop for breath and he stumbled and fell near them. The girl he was carrying hit the ground and rolled, letting out a loud cry of pain. Dunhama got up and looked. He had blood running down his face from his forehead. He blinked a bit as his head spun, but he shook it off. He said,

"Athilda! I am relieved you are safe!"

But the sound of an arrow reminded him that they were far from safe. It just missed Athilda, then the young boy, but hit the boy and girl's mother squarely under the left shoulder blade as she ran to kneel by her daughter. Blood came from her mouth and ribs where the arrow head protruded as she fell dead.

"Mother!"

The young boy cried, and the girl burst into tears as she pulled herself over to where her mother lay. Dunhama swallowed and looked at Athilda, who was crying. She held a child in her arms, and rocked it gently as a third arrow whizzed by. Dunhama sat down by Athilda and looked at the mother. He took his water bag and gave Athilda a drink, and Athilda cupped her hand and took some water to try and get the child to drink. Dunhama helped the young mother to sit up when she awoke.

"Your child is safe! Athilda has her!"

He said reassuringly, giving her the water bag. She drank heartily and gasped before drinking again. When a fourth arrrow, grazed Dunhama's arm, he looked to where it had come. Why that orc had signaled them out of everyone to target He knew not why. But he was heartened to see an arrow fired by the traveling elf fly afar and hit the orc square in the eye. Dunhama lifted his fist in the air in a show of defiance to the dead orc.

Kano came up dragging a couple gnarly branch logs from a nearby dead tree. They will be useful. They could make something to carry the injured girl much easier. Dunhamma put his hand on Athilda's shoulder and said,

"I think we may need your cloak."

Kano drug the branches over, having some old sacks from spilled supplies or non-important items. He ran the logs through the bags and used the draw strings on the bags to tie them together. It still wasn't quite enough material to hold a person.

Dunham inquired about Athlida's cloak.

As the escaped orc fired arrows on the small group, Athilda hugged the child and shielded her from the afraid. It was only when she saw Dunhama lift his fist in victory did she begin to breathe again. But when she looked at the child's mother and listened to the wails of sorrow and confusion from her daughter did she begin to cry again. Athilda cursed herself for being so weak. This child needed her. What if her mother did not make it to safety in time? She would be left to take care of the child. She had to be strong.
With her newfound resolve in mind, she sniffed then wiped her tears away, then looked at her friends and nodded.
"Of course."
After untying her cloak from about her neck, Athilda gave it to Dunhama, and turned her attention back to the child and told her her name.
"My name is Athilda. What is yours?"
"Mylana." The little girls voice sounded like a songbird on a bright spring day.
Athilda smiled comfortingly at the child.
"It's so nice to meet you, Mylana. These are my friends, Kano and Dunhama. They are going to get your momma to safety. I promise."
Mylanas lip quivered and tears began to roll down her cheeks.
"I'm scared, and hungry...I...I want my momma!"
Athilda's eyes began to water at Mylanas cry, so she began to sing a lullaby her mother used to sing to her and her brothers. Mylana immediately began to calm down, and even wrapped her arms around Athildas neck.
As she did this, Athilda wrapped her arms around the little girl, then picked her up and stood.
"We should go." She spoke to her friends.

Kano quickly helped Dunham get the cloak situated and moved the women onto the make-shift bed as gently, but quickly as they could. He tied the few supplies he had been carying onto the sticks so he and Dunham could both take hold and pull. Kano nodded in agreement as Athlida mentioned they needed to go.

As they started off it looked as though many of the people had already passed them by and they were near the end of the line. He didn't know how far it yet was until they reached Helms Deep. The battle raged on and seemed to be growing ever closer to their position.

Athilda’s cloak worked well with what Kano had built, and they got the daughter with the broken ankle set on it. She was reluctant to leave her mother. He brother went quiet and cold as he let his mother’s hand drop. He stood and appeared as a fierce Rohirrim soldier. To Dunhama’s eyes, the boy, maybe 13 years of age, became a man at that moment. The boy went to his sister and gave her their mother’s pendent. She took hold of it and sobbed.

Athilda held the child, and the mother seemed to revive with the water. But it would be a long walk for her. As she and Athilda set out up the slope, Kano and Dunhama each took a log onto a shoulder and they started to pull the young lady along and followed Athilda. The boy walked along beside his sister holding her hand.

The battle drew closer, and again arrows started to fall near them.

”Noooo!

An anguished cry went up back down the slope from where they had been. The boy turned and ran back crying,

”Father!”

Kano and Dunhama paused and looked back. A bloodied soldier missing his helm knelt by the dead mother cradling her body in his arms. He let let down gently and stood to hug his son, and the boy pointed up the slope to where his daughter was. He knelt down and brushed his wife’s hair from her face and kissed her brow, and took off his cloak and covered her before running up the slope.

“I will take her. You see to that young mother!

He relieved Kano and Dunhama, and he started up the slope in rugged determination. Dunhama saw that the young mother had fell to her knees, and he said to Kano,

”Let’s help her walk this slope!”

They came to Athilda and there helped the young woman to her feet. She stood between Dunhama and Kano, and they started to make for the top of the slope even as arrows fell around them.

Athilda ran up the hill as quickly as her legs would manage, for she felt as though her legs could give way at any moment. But the child needed her. She needed her older siblings. After releasing a ragged breath, Athilda looked over to the woman who walked between her friends and saw sadness, fear and worry in her brown eyes.
A few arrows fell to her left and right spurring her feet to move faster. The little girl in her arms was crying, and try as she might, Athilda couldn't comfort her. Not now.
"Are we close?!" Athilda asked a footman who was bringing up the rear of the group.

Kano watched the scenes around him with what seemed like jaded sadness. He seemed almost caloused to such things, yet not immune. He came out of his own thoughts when Dunham spoke. With a nodd he agreed and they began helping the young mother. He looked over to the child that Athilda carried. It cried uncontrolably constantly... and who could blame it? Even with it's mother right there, yet unable to be with her. Kano was not sure whether he felt worse for the mother or the daughter.

"We'll get you to safety," he told the young mother.

It was then a footman approached and Athilda asked if they were close. Kano hurried along but waited eagerly for the man's reply to the question.

The wounded soldier father looked ahead and said,

” We are near the Westfold Vale, but there is still far to go.. But fear not. I think the horsemen are driving off the attackers!”

It was reassuring words from the man who had to be grieving for his dead wife. They reached the top of the slope and the downside was long. They stopped only to take a breath and drink some water. The mother took her child from Athilda and comforted her, and Dunhama stepped over to Athilda and held her.

”Fear not, for we will make it.”

The short rest was over and they set out down into the vale…

Athilda watched and listened in awe at the hopeful response of the father. He had already suffered much, the death of his beloved wife and yet his voice held much hope and promise for better days. She nodded, then sighed a breath of relief as they stopped for a short rest. Athilda gladly gave the child to her mother-not because the girl bothered her, but rather because the child needed and wanted her mother. They needed to be together.
A tear rolled silently down her face as she watched the mother embrace her child. She had often longed for her mothers embrace, but it was now that she longed for her comfort. Athilda turnrd into Dunhama as she welcomed his embrace. She.nodded then closed her eyes as she wrapped her arms around his necklace and mjzzeled her face into his neck.
"I am glad I have you by my side, Dunhama. Truly, I am."
It was time for them to set out again. The mother insisted on carrying her child, but Athilda walked next to her in readiness, just in case she was nwwded.

"I am glad to have you as my..."

Dunhama said but his voice trailed off. He brushed her cheek with his finger as he looked into her eyes. He lost his words for that moment, but finally said as he looked down

"I'm afraid I got blood on your cheek and tunic.I am sorry...."

Dunhama had been grazed on his bare arm by one of the orc sharpshooter's arrows, and his forehead trickled blood slightly from where his head hit a rock when he dived out of the way of the cart. He hadn't thought of his own minor injuries with all that has happened in such a short time. Dunhama brushed Athilda's hair from her cheek before turning to the voice of the Lady Eowyn.

"Come swiftly, we can get into the Deeping Coombe while the horsemen fight the enemy! They buy us time!"

They all set off as fast as they could. The father pulled his injured daughter as his son ran beside him. The young mother suckled her child as she ran as fast as she could. Athilda, Kano, and Dunhamas set off behind them. It would be good to get to the fortress. Maybe then they could have a respite.

Athilda became lost in his eyes and began to search them as his words slipped away. It was only after he apologized did she recognize the wounds on his face and arm.
"It is not you who needs to apologize, but me. I didn't even notice you were wounded. Please forgive me for being so foolish, Dunhama."
Her voice was soft and kind, and as he pushed her hair away, her heart felt as though it were going to leap out of its cavity. She was about to reach out to touch his face, but stopped as the Lady Eowyn gave further instruction.
As the group set off again, Athilda couldn't help but worry about dressing his wounds.
"I can dress your wounds once we reach the fortress, sir." She said as she looked up at Dunhama.

Dunhama looked at the cut the arrow fin made as they started to walk..

"You are no foll Athilda. There has been much happening around us. You saw to this child and you helped this mother in her time of need. Your empathy I admire very much, and it is one of the many things that I... um..."

Dunhama felt a rush of heat flow into his face and he swallowed before finishing his sentence. He reached over and put his hand on Athilda's back and felt her hair in his fingers. He took a deep breath as he took his hand back and said haltingly,

"I ... I think my arm will survive until we get to Helms Deep. As for my head, well, it throbs, though I cannot see the wound, and it swims, though it may not be from the wound but from..."

He choked again. They were silent for several steps, when Dunhama finally said,

"They can be tended in time after we reach Helms Deep."

Dunhama rubbed his fingers together, remembering the feel of Athilda's hair...
