“The king had no business mixing the blood of the Numenoreans with Rhovanion. There are no end to the problems it could cause.”

“What’s the king to you, Anatol? You have enough problems with your own wife! And she’s Numenorean!”

Laughter echoed in the dining room and Anatol flushed, turning his attention back to his breakfast and away from politics. However the conversation had been broached and the debate continued on in smaller circles around the tables. The discussion on the Rhovanion had renewed since the King’s ‘half breed’ son had arrived the day before. Though loyal in their service to King Valacar, the guards of the East City were not exempt from the suspicion and dislike of their prospective king, Prince Eldacar.

“What the king has started may well be the end of the pure bloodline,” an older soldier commented. “If there is no need to marry Numenorean to Numenorean then our bloodline will fail and we will be liken to the Rhovanions. But that mistake has been made, and I fear that to keep the crown, young Prince Eldacar will have to prove himself doubly worthy. No doubt he will need to marry a Numenorean lady.”

The older soldier’s audience mauled over his words, including two younger men with clean faces and bright eyes. Gethen and Garren Undarcil, twin guards of the East City. The elder of the two, Gethen, leaned forward.

“But if he doesn’t, what will happen then? If the country is shaken by Prince Eldacar what will happen if he further weakens the bloodline?”

The old soldier shook his head, “Who knows?”

“So will you serve under a ‘half breed’, Norwyn?” Garren asked the old soldier.

“Half breed,” the old soldier grumbled. “Not a fitting name to be calling your king, boy.”

“Prince Eldacar,” Garren corrected himself. “Will you serve under him, or do as Anatol threatens to do and align yourself with a proper heir?”

“I will serve the King of Gondor,” Norwyn replied stoutly. “And by right, Prince Eldacar is the future King.”

“Well, I would never give my full trust to a Rhovanion unless they proved they were worth it,” Garren leaned back. “But neither am I opposed to them like my father. I suppose I will stay true to Prince Eldacar, when he becomes King.”

“Aye,” Gethen nodded. “If he rules us wisely and fairly, as a true Numenorean King would. But...”

At that moment all talk of Prince Eldacar, Rhovanions, and loyalty to the King ceased as the Captain stepped into the room. It was well known that the Captain was a staunch supporter of the King and his decisions, and would not allow any ‘rebellious’ talk in his presence.

“To your patrols!” the Captain ordered.

Gethen pushed back his chair and rose quickly, checking his weapons. Mirroring his movements, Garren followed the line of men exiting the dining room. The twins quickly marched out with the rest of their company, passing by the night watch as they entered the barracks.

“Ready for another day in the streets, brother?” Garren wrapped his arm around his twin’s shoulders.

“Aye,” Gethen smirked.

Hands on their weapons, the twins began their patrol along the docks. Greeting the local fishermen repairing nets and boats, they passed by the different shops that lined the wharf. A man in black exited a tavern with two large sailors following him. The twins immediately recognized him as one Guild.

“Good morning sir,” Gethen greeted him with a polite nod.

“Ah, guards,” the man smiled. “There is trouble in the tavern. The keeper seems to have some unwanted guests.”

Garren straightened, “We will see to it.”

“Thank you,” the man turned and pushed his way past.

Garren glanced at his brother as they entered the tavern. Glancing around at the eight Rhovanion strangers sitting or standing at the bar. Garren sent his twin a wary look. Seeing the tavern keeper, Gethen stepped forward.

“Are you having trouble with your guests, sir?”

The ales were served, and one of the men paid with crown gold. Jarod looked at it and back at them, He knew that he was likely to face troubles with the Ship Captain’s Guild over his serving the Rhovanions, but profit is profit, and as long as it isn’t that strange Rhovanion coin, Jarod would take it.

Two Gondorian guards entered and one of them said,

“Are you having trouble with your guests, sir?”

Jarod looked at the two stern soldiers but didn’t say anything. He wasn’t sure what to say. He could say yes and have the Rhovanions cleared out, or he could say no and enjoy the short term profits. Meanwhile, at the sound of the soldier’s voice, Vidnavi looked over at them before leaning into her sister to whisper something in Rhovanion. Vilna grinned and pushed her sister’s face away. She said back to her in Westron,

”Enjoy your beer and don’t get distracted.”

Meanwhile, Nadia took some fresh water up to the table where Almara and her companion was sitting she leaned down as she set the water flask on the table and said in a whisper to Almara,

”That man dressed in black who just left…he speaks ill of the Prince.”

Nadia picked up the empty plates and the asked,

”Is there anything else I can get for you?”

She smiled as she looked first to Almara then to her companion. Then Vilmaith’s voice could be heard by the bar below.

”There is no trouble here. Jarod is taking really good care of us. Who said there was trouble?”

Vilmaith stood between the guards and the others with her hands on her hips looking at one, then the other. The guards looked over to Jarod to clear this report up. He was a bit nervous to do so…

===========================

Berian was warm as he had barely any time to rest. It seemed the vambraces he had made and brought with him were popular with the Rhovanion soldiers. He had sold all he had and wished he had brought more. His leather helmet liners sold to some Gondorian soldiers, for they were more comfortable than the standard issue. With only a few items left and the sun westering, he packed up and set off back to the inn.

When he reached the east side, there seemed to be some ill feeling in the air. Many of the sailors who had been at the inn the night before talked with others from a ship that had just come in. Berian didn't like the sound of their words they spoke to each other as he walked by. He got to the inn and walked into the door to find the backs of two soldiers standing there. He paused and decided to sit outside for now...

Again, Almara was held back by a motion from Rie-Zunic as trouble threatened to bring itself about surrounding the Rhovanians once more. Nadia served them and pointed out the man in black.

"Thank you," Almara said with a smile.

"A second loaf of your fresh baked bread," Rie-Zunic requested as Nadia inquired if they would like anything more. "And thank you." He motioned ever so slightly towards the man in black and slipped Nadia a coin.

It wasn't long before she was back with the bread and Rie-Zunic continued to observe. He was to gather information, not get involved. The scenes that were playing out would give him plenty to consider and report to his superiors. The man in black would be of particular interest.

"Calm down," Rie-Zunic told Almara after Nadia had dropped off their loaf of bread. He took a chunk out of the loaf and dipped it in his morning coffee, eating slowly.

Almara sighed. "I know... sorry." She took her eyes off the scene and acted more normal.

They decided to wait and see how this would play out. Between eh Rhovanians, the Gondorian guard, and the man in black with his lackeys, things were getting quite interesting.

”There is no trouble here. Jarod is taking really good care of us. Who said there was trouble?”

Garren’s hand crept to his knife handle as he kept his brother’s back protected. Gethen gave the woman a long glance, having expected one of the men to take charge.

“We were informed that certain guests were unwanted,” Gethen tapped his sword’s hilt. “We wanted to make sure things were alright with you, Keeper,” he turned towards Jarod. “Is there anything wrong?”

Garren whirled around as the door opened, but finding it wasn’t another Rhovanion he relaxed slightly. Things were getting strange on the docks. Why would Rhovanions come to the City that disliked them the most?

~~~
His hands reeked of soap. Sorin scrubbed at his itchy nose with the back of his hand. He hated washing tankards, especially ones that his father’s debts dirtied. Drying the tankards, he placed them in the clean stacks lining one counter. Wiping his hands on his trousers, he glanced around. The Tavern Keeper seemed occupied with something happening out front. A good time to spy out what he could pinch off the guests.
He missed Patch’s constant companionship. The Keeper wouldn’t be thrilled about the little black rat scurrying in Sorin’s footsteps everywhere he went, and Sorin didn’t want to risk losing his only friend.
Taking two clean tankards in his hands, Sorin shook his shaggy hair out of his eyes. There seemed to be many guests that were sure to have a good bag of coins. If there was some way to get close.
Plans flitted through his mind.
Just a few coins.
That's all he needed.
Jarod could see tensions were raised, and if he didn't want his place of business destroyed right then and there, he finally said to the guard
"No trouble now. As long as everyone pays and gets along."
He smiled a nervous smile. Jarod knew he would have to answer to the Ship Captains guild for this. At best he will be black listed and the ships crew will all go elsewhere. Being that is half of his business, it would hurt. But with the two armed shieldmaidens that look alike being fully armed, things could really go bad. Hopefully they will leave after their beers as they said earlier. The five Rhovanion men though look like they are in there for the night.
Finally Berian walked in past the guards. He gave then a nod each and scratched his head. Was he seeing double? He looked at Vilna and Vidnavi, and really thought he was seeing double. He nodded to then as well,
"Ladies, Vilmaith, good evening!"
Berian then went to his room to drop off his pack. He would return to the common room later. Vidnavi saw Nadia walk by then looked up as Berian disappeeared up the stair, and she let out a giggle.
"Oh Vilmaith..."
Not even Vilna could see what the humor was about. She said as she finished her beer,
"We do need to get back. Vilmaith especially. We may have duty posts tomorrow."
"I'm ready."
Vilmaith said as she set her half-finished tankard on the bar. They looked at Vidnavi who kept looking at one of the guards, and she finally downed the last of her beer and said,
"Ok, if we must, and we must."
The three started heading to the door as they bade farewell to their countrymen who remained in Rhovanion. Vidnavi kept looking the guard nearest to the bar in the eye as she started to walk past him. She didn't realize the small leather bag she had some of the Rhovanion silver coins in was missing from her belt...
Almara let out a barely audible sigh as the tensions eased up and the Rhovanian women headed on their way. She almost rolled her eyes. "All this-" again, she was silenced by a look from Rie-Zunic. She gave him a playfully harsh glare. "You'r such a stick in the mud you know it?"
"Good," he said with a serious look. "Sticks don't draw attention." He smiled just a bit as Almara returned his tease.
"Ha, ha," her words came mockingly.
Rie-Zunic tore off another piece of the bread and stuffed his mouth as a wider smiled threatened to creep across his face. "You know," he said, mouth half full of food.
"You know I hate it when you talk with food in your mouth," Almara glared.
Rie-Zunic nodded. "I'm glad you came along." He finished his bite only after his words.
"No trouble now. As long as everyone pays and gets along."
Gethen shared a look with his brother, why would one of the Guild lie? The Keeper had looked nervous, even worried. Garren stiffened, catching one of the Rhovanion women staring at his brother.
“What do you want Rhovanion?” He asked warily, hand gripping the knife at his side.
Gethen turned and placed a hand on his twin’s shoulder. He shook his head slightly and pushed his brother backwards and out of the Rhovanion women’s path. Now was not the time for a quarrel.
~~~

The Keeper was still distracted, giving Sorin time to secret the purse of coins, before going back to his work. His father could drink tonight, giving him enough time to find another tavern that would take him. Considering his real job done, Sorbin went back to the tankards.

Prince Eldacar awoke early the morning after he had arrived. He stood and looked out over the city as the sun rose behind the Mountains of Shadow. He could see the people starting their days with many getting to the market early. He looked at the great bridge that crossed the Anduin and saw a ship leaving the dock heading down stream to Minas Tirith and Pelargir. He eyed the east city and beyond into Ithilien and thought about the challenge he had before him. His father King Valacar joined him on the balcony, looking grey and strained. He said,

”There is much grief in my kingdom. And I had a dream of death and destruction. Already the governors of the southern provinces of Lebennin, Befalas, and Harondor have all sent me letters saying they are being pressured by the Captains Guild to oppose your ascension. But equally, I have received assurances from Ithilien, Lamedon, and Anorien swearing complete fealty to the Line of Kings. I have yet any word from Anfalas, but I hear that except for some coastal ports, the majority support us. You marrying Lady Farien of the line of Hurin relieved many, for she is pure Dunedain. Yet even here there is mixed feelings. Some accept this, while others are radical and will accept no one other than a pure Dunedain. There are some who think you should be bypassed in ascension and I give the crown to Ornendil, he being more Dunedain than you.”

“Maybe you should father.”

Eldacar snapped before he went on,

”Pelargir is the hub of dissention, and Castamir resides there with a fleet. Whether he has the armies to back up his claim will be the question. My son is Captain of the Guard of the White Tree, a ceremonial position he loathes. Make him Pro Counsel of Lebennin. With him in Pelargir, he will counter Castamir’s claims, and with most people being loyal to the Crown, they will follow Ornendil”

Valacar stood by the rail of the balcony and sobbed,

”What have I done…”

He then took a heavy breath and said to Eldacar,

”You, son, are heir apparent, and Ornendil is next in line. That is the way of Gondor. I will send Ornendil to Pelargir, and I will send your brother Aldamar to Harondor. I will also summon Castamir to me. I need to have direct words with him. I believe he still respects me enough to heed my summons. Right now, you my son, must get out among the people. When they see and know you, they will love and support you.”

Eldacar looked south along the Anduin. The peaceful morning did not foretell the future. He nodded, knowing he was away north too long. Eldacar was proud of his sons, and even if he did not love Lady Farien of Minas Anor, he liked her as the mother of their sons, and they both accepted that the marriage was purely political to bolster the Dunedain lineage of the crown. He said,

”Lady Farien, my wife, will arrive here from Minas Anor ere evening comes. I will greet her at the edge of the city, and we will be the happily reunited couple. Tomorrow we will tour the city… all of it. We will talk with the people and be accessible. I will not hide behind palace walls. My Gondorian and Rhovanion guard will escort us.”

King Valacar sighed. His son was his own man, and it would do no good to tell him that the Rhovanion Guard may be seen as divisive. But deep down, King Valacar admired his son’s boldness.

===========================

(In Pelargir that same morning)

Castamir stood overlooking the ships at anchor. His strength in ships was unmatched, but he lacked marines. Keeping the Haradian mercenaries on call was expensive, but under the circumstances, necessary. He had them ready to board ships in Umbar when he was ready to move, but until then, they were getting free pay. The trouble was he wouldn’t make his move while King Valacar lived. The King was a true Numenorean. He just made a bad decision. If he only had relations with Princess Vidumavi and came home afterward, the half breed Eldacar would be kicking around up north an orphaned young man. But no, he had to marry the Rhovanion, and that made his son heir apparent. Castamir didn’t accept the Rhovanions mingling with the Numenoreans of Gondor, but had Valacar not done so, he wouldn’t have this opportunity. He turned and entered the Captain’s Guildhouse, and he looked around at the table. The Chairman of the Guild stood, and Castamir looked at him. The Chairman said,

”Lord Castamir, your proposals are most intriguing. Your bloodline is definitely of royal lineage. However, what you propose borders on sedition, if not outright secession and rebellion against the crown. Since this Guild was chartered by King Eärendil over a thousand years ago, it has always served the rightful king of Gondor. As your claim you put forth is that the heir apparent is only half Numenorean, he would not be rightful king, we have looked into this validity. The guild appears to be split. A fair number would be ready to support Ornendil as king, being three quarters Numenorean and the son of Lady Farien, who holds high standing with many here. The motion to support you as King after the passing of Valacar was rejected in favour of Ornendil. There was majority agreement that the Guild could not support Eldacar as King, but tabled taking any action until the time that King Valacar passes.”

Castamir bit his lip but said nothing. He nodded and turned and walked out. He had many allies in the Guild, and he knew who he would have to turn. He would bide his time. The Guild members have mostly lost touch with the front line officer and the Guild’s junior members. Castamer had not, and in them lay his power for the majority supported him. They were in every port, and they were respected captains and first officers of the smaller ships. Castamir was confident that he could turn the Guild in his favour in time.

=======================================

” “What do you want Rhovanion?”

The Gondorian soldier said fingering his knife as he looked back into her eyes. Vidnavi paused and turned to face him as his comrade tried to calm him. With a quick look at the face of the man restraining him, she could see they were brothers… twins. Vidnavi put her hand up to Vilna who came to move her along. She stopped and sighed as she paused to see what trouble her sister managed to start. The Rhovanion men at the bar paused their Rhovanion chatter as well and turned to watch. Vidnavi looked the soldiers over and stared back in the eyes of the one who challenged her,

”What do I want you ask? I want many things, Soldier of Gondor. What I want and what I can have do not usually align. Yet, since you asked, I will say…”

Vilna turned and stood by her sister, looking at the other soldier. As he was ready to back his brother, she was ready to back her sister. Vidnavi looked down and saw the soldier’s hand contemplating the hilt of his sheathed knife then looked back in his eyes.

”I want to challenge you in melee in the next tournament. One on one, or, if you prefer, the four of us.”

Vilna elbowed her sister for freely volunteering her into a tournament fight without asking. She noted it and would get her back in time. Vilna said before her sister could open her mouth again.

”Prince Vi…. Eldacar, said they have tournaments here, no? He spoke of having one after he returned to this city. That day will come, and we will be there. Will you be?”

Vilmaith came storming back in the door and said, breaking the tense air around the four,

”Fine time to be flirting with the local soldiers. Lets go!”

Vilna smiled and nodded at the soldiers and started out the door, taking her sister’s hand and pulling her along. Vidnavi lifted her eyebrow and smiled at the soldier that challenged her as she trailed her sister and Vilmaith out the door.

Rie-Zunic eyed the guards and then looked back to Almara. "Why don't you habe a chat with Nadia some time later. See if we can figure out the name of the man in black and any of the Rhovanians here. Just make sure no one finds out you are asking questions."

Almara scoffed. "Like you need to tell me that." She smiled. "I'll talk to her. What are you going to do?"

"I am going to find out ablut those twin Go dorian guards... and possibly sign up for a tournament," he said with a grin.

"Not fair," Almara said.

"Well, you are free to sign up too, if you like," Rie-Zunic told her.

"Is there prize money involved?" Almara asked.

Rie-zunic sighed. "I have no idea."

Almara shrugged. "Well, it's worth looking into." She glanced over to where Nadia was working. "Maybe I will see about catching her when she gets off work... surely she gets a break, right?"

Rie-Zunic just shrugged.

Almara flagged Nadia over. "I would like one last drink if you would please. If you would care to join me for a meal... somewhere else, I would like to speak with you after your off work sometime."

Nadia looked around before nodding to Almara and going to get her drink. Almara could see that Nadia was having a talk with Jarod, and the exchange, though friendly, seemed to end with Jarod giving something to Nadia and Nadia turning and coming to the table with the drink. There was genuine sadness in her eyes as she came back to the table. She held the drink and the tray on one hand while she cleared the table and wiped it down. Keeping the tray balanced while leaning forward to get the far side of the table wiped, she said in a low voice,

”I am never off work, except when I sleep.”

Nadia straightened as she set the drink before Almara, her eyes pleading. She looked around quickly as she slid the drink slowly across the table to her, and said,

”I am to go and get some supplies for Jarod. When you see me leave, you follow?”

Nadia straightened up and turned to take the empty tankards back. She had lingered too long at one table.

But it was not long before Nadia removed her apron and headed out the door with a basket in arm.

Almara gave an apologetic look as Nadia returned with the news. "I'll follow she said softly." She glanced back to Rie-Zunic after Nadia had left. "I can't believe that... she is practically his slave!" She spoke softly but obviously annoyed.

Rie-Zunic shrugged and gave a sad look. "I'm sorry... I don't agree with such things either but we really can't get involved." He glanced back at Nadia then to Almara who looked like she was about to scold him. "Officially..." he added. "I can only observe. You, however, are not officially on this mission. Just... don't make a scene please."

"Afraid you'll have to claim you don't know me?" Almara smiled.

"I would never," Rie-Zunic said, not sharing Almara's teasing tones. "I just don't want to have to blow cover to get you out of trouble."

"I'll be subtle about it," she promised.

Berian stowed his good away well and secured his room before returning to the common room. He was glad his bargain with the Rhovanion woman didn’t break him last night. He looked around the room and saw that she and the shieldmaidens had left. Jarod looked stressed as he talked with the guards, Nadia was setting out for an errand, and a boy worked on cleaning the last of the dishes from the lunch crowd. There were some Rhovanion men clustered around the end of the bar talking in their language, so he set himself against the bar between them and the Gondorian guards. Maybe he would hear talk? As it turned out, Jarod poured him a drink without missing a word with the guards, and he sipped it. Only been here a day and he knows what I like!

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

Nadia slowlyl walked the street south to a place where the local markets were, and when she arrived she proceeded to look at the vegetables. she looked around for the woman from the inn, but even if she didn't show, this was something Nadia enjoyed. It was her time away from the inn. After she selected some garlic and some tomatoes, she looked around at the beautiful handmade jewelry. She wanted to buy something pretty, but she would not have a reason to ever wear it. Besides, she was saving her money. One day.... She looked again to see if the woman was going to come.

Not too long after Nadia had left Almara casually stood and said a, "see ya later." To Rie-Zunic and walked out. She was able to catch sight of Nadia, but disn't want to leave at the exact same time as to avoid any suspicion. When she caught up with Nadia she found her looking at jewelry.

"You have a good eye for fine jewelry," Almara said with a smile as she walked up behind Nadia. "Thank you for meeting. I'm rather interested in finding out names for these Rhovanians as well as the Gondorian guards... but more so... I should like to find the name of that man in black and anything you can find out about him. Just don't pru hard enough it seems obvious you are digging for information.

Nadia at first tensed when she heard a voice behind her. She turned and saw that Almara was smiling. Nadia walked along and looked at a brooch that shone red in the sun. She said to Almara,

”I know some now. The woman who was drinking last night is named Vilmaith. She stayed with me overnight. The two who look alike I heard Vilmaith call Vidnavi and Vilna, but I could not be sure which was which. The two Gondorian brothers I have seen around here in the East City for some time. They sometimes have Bridge duty, but usually they are on street patrol.”

Nadia paused and blushed before whispering to Almara,

”Speaking for myself, I think they are cute.”

She blushed harder and looked down, hiding in her hair. She started to walk back toward the inn and said as Almara walked along with her,

”I do not know the name of the man in the fine black wool uniform, but I have seen others hat the inn with that same uniform. The man at the inn today I had not seen, and neither had Jarod. He is scared of that man.”

Nadia looked around and thought everyone was listening and she started to get scared. She wanted to run back to the inn, but she liked talking to Almara. She turned her eyes to her in a scared, pleading look.

"Thank you," Almara said as Nadia rattled off the information that she knew. "I'm sure this will be helpful." She chuckled a little as Nadia spoke of the two Gondorian guards. "Not really my type, but I've certainly seen worse." She flashed a quickly fading smile that seemed to reveal this to be a tender topic for her. She cleared her throat and looked back with a more profesional expression. "The man in black I think I should learn more about. If you hear anything, do let me know?"

She too glanced around, noting Nadia's reaction and fear. No doubt the young women was not use to such activities. "I'm sure it will be fine. I won't ask you too much else if you feel like it may draw unwanted attention to you."

Meanwhile, back at the inn Rie-Zunic had inquired of the tournament. He had asked Jarod the bar keeper. He figured if such a thing was planned there would likely be talk of it amongst the local patrons.

Jarod heard the man ask about a tournament and he looked at the two guards. He then said,

”Not sure eh. Think there has been rumour that one would be in order once prince Eldacar arrived. Likely will hear in the next day or so I reckon.”

He looked about, seeing the boy lurking about. He said to him,

”Grab a broom boy! Sweep the floors while we are not busy”

The boy grumbled and started to sweep. Jarod looked about and said more to himself than anyone, even though all who stood there heard him.

”What is taking Nadia so long to get back here….”

Nadia paused when Almara spoke, and she reached for her hand. She looked about before looking her in the eyes. She said quietly,

”I… I want to help you in any way I can. I love my King, and I love my Prince, but if these naval men find out I feel so, they…”

Nadia bit her lip as she looked at Almara. She wanted to be a strong woman like she was. She wanted to help. Almara gazed hard at Nadia, and Nadia continued to speak,

”I think that man may be at the inn tonight. I will do what I can to find out who he is.”

She started to walk again, and said,

”I think if the Rhovanions come in tonight, there will be troubles…. I am late, I have to get back.”

Nadia looked at Almara, restless to get back to the inn.
