With the exploding door, Durian stood behind Mariel as Fahalas burst in. Mariel had lost her chance at surprise and hid the knife behind her back. Durian could not hold back his surprise when he saw Fahalas, but then a child ran in and slid under the bed. Immediately two others came out of the room across the way and in to his room confronting Fahalas. Durian stood ready, but was just going to let this play out. There were many dangers to watch for, but none like the knife in Mariel's hand.

~ ~ ~

With the two drinking buddies coming his way, Wulgov got up and went down the hall. He saw the crowd in the first room, and he went past them. He knew that with the sisters arguing and this commotion going on, it was his chance to seek out the maid. She was worth five King's Gold in Bree for killing a man. He was determined to collect. He looked back and saw the shieldmaiden staring at him as she started down the hall. Hilferin paused and downed his flagon of ale before setting the empty on Wulgov's table, and he followed Freja...

Mariel blinked suddenly and looked in shock as a small child ran underneath her husbands' legs and dove underneath Durian's bed. She turned her head to see if the child was okay, but then she quickly looked back at Fahalas and narrowed her eyes.
"What are you doing here, Fahalas? Get out, now before you hurt someone!" Her heart began to beat more rapidly as she saw the dagger in his own hand shift slightly as the healer and the other man stood outside the door, demanding to know what was happening.
Her grip on the dagger tightened as she flicked her gaze back to Fahalas.
"Nothing is wrong...Fahalas was just leaving us..."
She glared at her husband in anger and bitterness. He would not win. Not this.
"Leave us be Fahal, otherwise I will be forced to call the authorities."

Lochared's anger at his younger sister melted away as fear from her set hold of him and with a mightier roar than before, he launched himself bodily at a man blocking his way. Although no more than 12 years of age, Lochared was still a sizeable lad and so his impact with the man's back was not insignificant. Reckless as this was, it was entirely to Lochared's nature for they had lost everything in this world. Their father killed, their mother slaughtered before their eyes, only the two siblings remained adrift. And there was nothing, when it all came down to it, that Lochared would not do for his younger sister. Even if she had just stolen his money pouch with a sneaky, low down trick in the stables.

~ ~ ~ ~ ~

There, the would be thief from the stables, or so Freja thought as Lochared bounced off something or someone and landed, sprawling in the hall. She picked up speed to apprehend the lad whilst he was still groggy from his impact with the floor, however Lochared was surprising swift to recover his senses and try again. Closer she could see that the object Lochared was bodily throwing himself at the burned man she had seen earlier. A quick glimpse past the man revealed a crowded room, with two more men including the Ranger she'd stitched up earlier and a blonde woman that looked scared.

Lochared crouched for greater force and she only just collared the lad as his feet left the floor. Grunting at his weight and speed, she spun the boy around in a firm grip. Her orbit took in another woman in the hall, the healer she had in mind for the Ranger and then as she spun about further, Hilferin coming after her down the hall. The boy in her grip fought like a greased eel and so she wrapped her arms around his flailing limbs, dodged his attempt to head butt her in the face and then fell with Lochared backward.

Predictably, Lochared bellowed like an injured bull at this affront and attempted to scramble out from underneath Freja. Now, it wasn't that Freja was incompetent. She was a Shieldmaiden and this was just a boy. A frightened, angry boy, but still. However, Lochared had no compunction to spare Freja from any injury and unlike the boy, Freja was not as cavalier when it came to apprehending him. Beating up a child was hardly an honourable act, even one that had stolen from her. And so she was at pains to apprehend Lochared without harming him and he was at pains to make that as difficult as he could.

Kayden eyed the situation carefully. After a moment he looked to Falahas. "Seems you aren't welcome here." His eyes shifted to the blond women, then. "And it seems that to say nothing is going on, as you hold a knife behind your back... Is a bit of an understatement."

He eyed the situation more, sizing up possible outcomes. Then he added, "However, if everyone involved insists all is well... Far be it from me to interfere. At least the blood spilled will not be on my hands."

It was then, Fahalas turned ever so slightly to reveal his face. Kayden looked closer, scowling at the man. "Do I know you? The Aughire arena fights... You've been there..."

Wulgov was knocked forward by a boy that ran into his back, and the shieldmaiden took her eyes off him to grab the boy, recognising him. Wulgov kept going. There was so much happening, but Durian kept his focus on the man Mariel spoke to, and the burned man who started talking to him about the arena games distracted him as he stepped toward her. Durian slid his hand around Mariel’s waist and spun her around behind him and said as he was swinging his fist toward his face,

”Fahalas? Been a long time since the Silver Bark in Minas Tirith my friend! I didn’t know you were Mariel’s husband, let alone, married!”

The surprise blow caused Fahalas to fall backand he dropped his knife. Hilferin paused by the door and said,

”Who is calling the authorities on who here?”

He looked at the rogue ranger as the Gondorian fell to the floor.

Mariel glanced over her husbands' shoulder towards the burned man, her eyes widening as he mentioned the dagger behind her back. Her eyes flicked back to her husband, but before he could react, the burned man asked him about an...arena?
"What?" Her brows furrowed, but before she could ask Fahal any more questions, Durian pulled her behind him and landed a punch in her husbands' face. Her eyes widened in fear as she looked to her husband, who now looked furious, then up to a man...a Ranger...who had just stepped into the fray.
"I am, sir." Mariel's voice, although slightly frightened and hesitant, was bold and determined.
"I am calling the authorities onto that man, there."
She pointed at her husband and gripped the knife even tighter as he shifted towards her.

As chance would have it, Freja had managed to sight the dagger dropped to the floor and she kicked it out of reach as Hilferin stepped forwards towards the blonde woman. Out of her reach and everyone else's, as luck would have it, but not for long for the Dunlender and she had locked eyes and a flash of recognition had passed between them. Wulgov eye's narrowed as did hers and then tracked towards the dagger lying in the hall. He lunged for it and with an oath in thick Rohirric, Freja abandoned the boy under her to grab for the Dunlender.

A hand closed around one of his ankles, a flimsy hold but enough to tackle him. The Dunlander hit the boards hard enough to shake himself and everyone else but he was already fighting to dislodge her. Swearing now, Freja set to with a force she had withheld from the boy and a brawl between the Dunlander and the Shieldmaiden broke out in earnest now - swift and vicious. Wulgof was stronger but he was also contending with the youngest Shieldmaiden to have attained all seven braids and torcs. The harder he fought, the closer he edged to losing his life and unlike the child, Freja had no compunctions at all about that.

Lochared, however, was confused momentarily at being suddenly released. One moment the Shieldmaiden had been pressing him into the boards and the next it looked like she was about to kill that other man. Not that Lochared minded over much. Being apprehended by a Shieldmaiden was not pleasant and the fact that the sort of man that had killed his parents was about to get his just deserts held no small appeal for the 12 year old lad. But still, where was Rin?

All the adults seems distracted or pre-occupied as far as he could tell, and so Lochared started edging towards the door. If he sucked in his belly, he just might be able to slip through.

Under the bed, Rin could sense the encroaching violence. She could hear people fighting in the hall. She had heard a knife drop and adults were arguing. She could feel that familiar veil slipping over her, the one that always came when she thought of what had happened to Mama. Terrified, the girl began to cry.

With the strike from Durian knocking Falahas back, Kayden backed a few steps away from the door. Then the dunlanding and the shieldmaiden began a fight. Whether that was connected or not, Kayden was not sure. He backed up further, placing his good arm out towards Lyiana to shield her from any unwanted approach from one of these rowdy characters.

The small hallway was filling up fast. There were children now as well. He had missed the young lad before, but it looked like he was trying to squeeze past the commotion.

Then, from under the bed in the room he heard tears. He looked to Lyiana. He could tell she was concerned about the children. Rightly so, he decided. This was not a scene for a child.

He looked to her, then to the ranger who had entered the mix. Perhaps this man would set things right and be sure the offending parties were properly delt with.

"Yield! I yield! Wulgov replied hoarsely.

The Dunlender had gone limp but Freja was not going to be duped a second time. She still carried the scar he'd given her the first time Wulgov had pulled this stunt on her.

"Shieldmaiden," Hilferin said out of the corner of his mouth, a warning.

"Get her off me!" Wulgov begged, still boneless, "Please?"

She could taste the metallic kiss of her own blood as she pulled her lips back to snarl, "A trick!"

"I do not think so,"
Hilferin observed at which she swung her gaze momentarily up to him.

That was when Wulgov pounced with a blow that would have broken her nose if she had not of turned her head. As it was, he drove his forehead into her own with savage force. The Dunlender grinned ruthlessly as the Shieldmaiden's weight went dead atop him. A simple flip had her under him for a change and the dagger he'd been going for in his hand.

"So much prettier this way," he chuckled remorselessly, setting the dagger's edge against Freja's throat as he considered those in the hall, "Now, where were we?"

Hilferin, seeing that he was the “law” here, realised he needed to act fast before blood was spilled. He first went out in the hall where an ugly Dunlanding had just rolled the shieldmaiden and clubbed him with the hilt of his sword and knocked him out. Rolling the carcass off Freja, he could see she was out as well. It gave him some time to sort out why the blonde wanted the Gondorian arrested. He looked at the boy and gave him a nod that he needed to help calm his little sister under the bed as he collected some knives. Fahalas was getting up shaking his head after being out from Durian’s punch. Hilferin stepped in front of him before any more moves were made, and he said,

”From what I saw lady, this man was assaulted by Durian, who I should be arresting for failing to report for duty after his leave. We will sort this out between you three in the common room. Can you peaceably go there while I get these two contained?”

He looked at Freja and Wolgof who were starting to stir, and Durian looked at Fahalas and made a gesture of peace and that he would follow. Fahalas slowly walked out of the room, and Durian followed/ Mariel hesitated though as Hilferin turned to the lady healer and asked,

”Miss, can you see that these kids are looked after? Maybe take them to the common room and get them something to eat?”

He then looked at the burned man and said,

”I’m sure there is a story in you on how you got into this condition.”

He didn’t quite get back to the hall where the shieldmaiden had stood up. She gave Wulgof a kick in the head with her boot and knocked him out again. Hilferin sighed. There was nothing that brought one down off a good drunk than having to sort out trouble. He got in font of Freja and said,

”That’s enough please. I have enough to deal with here. There is some rope in the room. Bind him so he can’t get away, and don’t beat on him any more please.”

He hoped Freja would so as he asked, for he didn’t want any dead bodies to explain. He looked at Mariel, and asked as he ushered her out of the room,

”Now tell me miss, why do you want the Gondorian arrested?”

As Hilferin ambled off chatting with the pretty blonde, Freja was left to the chores. She scowled down at the Dunlender sprawled at her feet and wondered just what Hilferin’s problem was. She hadn’t started this fight. She’d not taken the first swing. Was she just supposed to let Wulgof grab the dropped knife and have at them all? And another question that made her glare harder still, just why did Hilferin’s opinion matter to her anyway?

She stalked into the room, tottering on a little on her feet. Never mind that the doorway blurred and she now saw double. There was rope to be had in here and she’d have it. Freja cast about for it as the boy thief entered the room with the healer and the burned man. She cast the lad a baleful glare as she felt along her hairline. The stickiness she felt there was soon confirmed to be blood when she brought her fingers into view. An unsurprising discovery, that.

Whilst the boy got down on his belly and tried to insert himself under the bed, Freja located the rope and returned to the hall. She set to trussing Wulgof up as Lochared tried to cajole his sister out. Unsuccessfully as it turned out and now that there had been the promise of food his stomach had started to growl. He fetched himself out from the bed and climbed to his feet.

”She won’t budge,” he declared, ”It’s no use when she’s like this.”

“We cannot leave her there,”
the healer declared and Lochared shrugged as he eyed her and the burned man.

”You can fish her out if you like,” he said, ”But she bites.” He brandished his forearm by way of demonstration, his sister’s teeth still imprinted in his flesh. ”She’ll come out when she’s ready.”

And with that Lochared set off, eager to locate this meal he’d heard about. Once he gained the hall he found the Shieldmaiden grimly tying up the Dunlander. Her attention seemed off, at least not on him for a pleasant change, and her guard was down. He thought she looked sad until she realised he was there and her piercing blue eyes swung up to his. Loch hurried away towards the common-room and Freja returned her attention to the task before her.

Wulgof of Dunland had been apprehended by members of the Éored in the immediate aftermath of the war. He had been searched and what they had found had puzzled them at first until they realised what they were. And then they had called her in to interrogate the Dunlending found with not one but five necklaces of women’s ears in his possession. Necklaces he had taken great delight and pride in telling her about, given how selective he had been in selecting his ornaments. Only Shieldmaidens. Easterlings collected Shieldmaiden skins and Dunlendings collected their ears.

If fate had crossed their paths again, it was an ill will that guided it. When the truth had emerged, it had fallen to Freja to fend her countrymen off the Dunlending. Freja to protect the man who had preyed upon so many of her spear sisters against her own people. And now he was here. She tugged on the final knot and backed away, hands curling and uncurling at her sides. Her shoulders met with the wall of the hall and she forced her breathing through her nose. The floorboards she stared at doubled and then redoubled and Freja closed her eyes to shake her head. She regretted that immediately, the pain thobbing through her skull spiking so sharply her stomach twisted. Then a small hand slid through her own and Freja’s eyes popped open.

She found a small child, a girl with pale hair and wide stormy eyes, peering up at her solemnly. She had been crying recently, the tears still bright in her eyes. She was the sort of girl that Freja had never been, pretty and fragile. The kind that people rushed to protect. The child blinked up at her and tilted her head.

”Alone,” she said to Freja, ”Lonely.”

When Freja realised the child did not refer to herself, she recoiled from the girl’s grasp, ”Dwimmerlaik!”

“Come away, child,”
the healer declared, holding her hand out towards the girl.

”Frightened,” the girl said and then blinked, as if unaware of where she was. She stepped back from Freja and turned to run straight past the healer towards the common room.

Shaken, Freja tried to collect herself as the healer studied her for a moment. She averted her eyes until the woman was walking away, following the child. Only once she was alone did she allow herself to slide down the wall into a crouch, her hands covering her face. It had been a mistake to come here but where else was left to her now?

Kayden stepped back a few more steps as the ranger seemed to begin to get things under control. Lyiana tended to the child and before the ranger left he made a comment to Kayden about his story. Did the ranger know something? Did he want something? He didn't need questions to be asked... He didn't want questions to be asked.

He simply eyes the ranger and nodded, hoping his business would keep him occupied elsewhere.

Once everyone else went out to the common room, Kayden returned to his own room. He sighed, cringing in pain as he sat down in the chair once more. "So much for rest," he thought aloud. His adrenaline was flowing now and rest would not come. He took a deep breath as he realized his fists were still balled and wrists set for a fight. He relaxed and looked to the children. It seemed the young girl had.come out from the bed.

The creak of a floorboard snapped Freja's head up to find the burned man standing in the hall. He was looking in the direction the others had went but after a moment he turned back to where she was crouched against the wall. She could read his stance well enough that the man was ready for a fight.

"Common room," she said, nodding towards it and then wincing for her trouble, "That's where they all are."

She eyed him a moment longer, waiting to see if he would exploit her present weakness and then flickered her attention back to the Dunlending who was starting to stir once more. Wulgof cracked open an eye to regard her and then both eyes popped open in alarm.

"They left me with you?" he squawked and she offered her old prisoner a ruthless wink.

"You can't kill me. There's an amnesty!"

"Was,"
Freja answered, flexing her hands as if she was getting ready to use them, "Was an amnesty, and you left its protection behind the day you escaped."

"I got friends up here. You made a mistake following me here."

Freja shrugged, "Not you I'm hunting, Dunlender, but I'll take what I can get."

Mariel began to squeeze the hilt of her dagger as she contemplated the outcome of the situation she found herself witnessing. The Dunlanding and the Shieldmaiden were in a wrestling match, and were beginning to become violent, but it seemed that this soldier had it in for Durian.
Why?
Her thoughts were interrupted however by the sound of a child crying, and no matter how hard she tried to ignore the heart-wrenching sound, memories flooded her mind. Tears filled her eyes, but she kept them at bay as she focused on the situation at hand.
With a word, Fahalas had turned in annoyance and stormed out into the Common room with Durian following him a distance behind. Her gaze rested on his back as she watched him walk away, then she looked up at the soldier and straightened her back as she slowly walked out of the room.
"He has been following me, sir. Ever since I fl...ever since my home flooded-" a lie, one which she hoped he would not catch "-that...man....has been following me. He means me harm, sir; I know it."
She then turned on her heel and faced the solider dead on.
"And Durian did nothing wrong, sir. He was merely protecting me from the Gondorians' grasp."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Lyiana was glad for the soliders' attention for the safety of the children. Adults could be mended and healed, but little hearts such as theirs were not intended to carry such weight of sorrow. As the soldier asked her to care for the children, she nodded and placed a hand on Kaydens' good arm, then watched him as he limped back over to his room.
"Come with me, child." She held out her hand as the little girl spoke to the fierce woman, but to her surprise, the girl ran past her and back out to the Common Room where her brother sat near the fireplace.
Lyiana made her way over to the bar and ordered two large bowls of stew, a nice loaf of bread and two mugs of tea, then with great dexterity, she carried them over to the small table and set them in accordance.
"Now, you needn't worry about paying for this. All you need to worry about is eating your fill of stew and bread."
A warm, kind smile lifted the corners of her lips up and she nodded her head at their frightened and uncertain eyes.
"It is alright, I promise. I believe that I have some fruit if you'd like to share it?"

Hilferen looked Mariel in her bright eyes and stood there for a moment just before the common room. He said,

”Miss, Durian may have been protecting you from him, but he didn’t look like he was in any condition to be trying to defend you. He has been worked over pretty good himself. As for he not doing anything wrong, well, he did not report back for duty after his leave. ”Now, a flood you say?”

Hilferin raised an eyebrow, having noted she paused saying that word.

”Did you live next to a river somewhere? And this man following you, well, you are quite a beautiful woman. Are you saying he followed you from your flooded home to here to… hurt you?”

He glanced into the common room to see where the man had gone, and noted Durian approached him. He hoped there would be no more trouble, there in the commonroom or between the Dunlander and Sheldmaiden of Rohan in the hall. All he wanted to do was get back to trading flagons with Freja.

~ ~ ~

Fahalas went to the bar and leaned on to it. Durian came up beside him. He said,

”A hard drink for my friend here, and for me. He maybe is as sore as I am right now, but I owed him a punch.”

Caila broke away from her bickering with her sister to pour two small glasses of distilled grain. Durian waited for Fahalas to pick up his glass and Durian gave him a nod and they tipped their glassed down. Durian then said quietly so Fahalas was the only one to hear,

”You best go with that Ranger and leave Mariel alone. Otherwise…”

“Otherwise what?”

Fahalas said turning to Durian,

”I am married to her. I won’t be leaving her alone.”

Durian looked to the hall to see Mariel and Hilferin walk in to the room.

Wulgof came to in the hall bound hand and foot. He mumbled something about only wanting to collect a reward. He guessed the shieldmaiden may be hunting the same person and wanted the reward money too. Where did she go?

"Oh, there you are. I don't have a quarrel with you shieldmaiden. I'm here to collect a murderer to take back to Bree."

Freja rolled her eyes at Wulgof's statement.

"If it's the blonde bint, good luck. She has most of the men here wound round that beautiful little finger of hers. Two Rangers to get through at last count and likely more besides for ever there was a folk inclined to skulk in the shadows, it is the Rangers of the North."

The Shieldmaiden cracked her knuckles and then scowled at the floor, "I go releasing you and I'll be torn into pieces by them whilst she's out there fluttering her lashes at anything with a pulse. You're staying where you are and that's an end to it."

The floorboards she glared at doubled and then quadrupled. If she remained where she was, she'd likely keel over. Something Freja did not want the Dunlending to observe. Slowly Freja pushed to her feet and scanned the hall for something to pin the man in place. Finding nothing, she pressed into her room to retrieve a spear she had left there. Regaining the hall, the Dunlending had already managed to wriggle his way along over the floor. And so, Freja drove the war spear into the floor itself, pinning the rope at his ankles fast into place. She drove the spear deep, angling it to pass through the rope looped around his feet without severing the strands and then deeper still to ensure the point was buried in the wooden floor - no edges available to saw at.

Wulgof shrieked in alarm as he saw her draw the strength she would need to pin him into place. Once he realised what she had done, his shriek morphed into swearing that she roundly ignored. His arms tied behind him, not even a contortionist could slip that spear. The Dunlending pinned, Freja made her way as swiftly as she could for the rear door. Her disorientation grew and she bounced off the hall walls several times before she gained the door.

Once out in the yard, she made her way, weaving and tottering, for the well she had sighted by the stables. She let the bucket fall, hauled it up and dumped the cold water over her head. It was not enough of course, and it made the gash in her scalp sear, but Freja sucked in the pain and dropped the bucket into the well again for another dousing. If cold water could not clear her mind, then she knew she was in trouble. Trouble she could ill afford given the quarry she tracked.

Loch tucked straight into the stew, mumbling a hasty thanks through a mouth overfull. Rin, though, was suspicious. Why was this stranger helping them? Bitter experience had taught her that it was those with the kind eyes and gentle faces that could prove the most treacherous. And so she stared at the woman who had brought stew and offered fruit, wondering just what sort of price would accompany such kindness. She had said there was nothing to pay, but Rin had no reason to trust such an unlikely offer.

"You eating yours," Loch muttered as he reached for a handful of bread to stuff in his mouth.

Rin shook her head and so Loch dragged her bowl of stew over to his.
