Esmerelda rode and rode for many hours. She was getting rather sleepy, since she didn't have any sleep before she left. She struggled to keep her eyes open. She rubbed them and then looked down to Faramir. She sighed and then looked ahead again.

Pippin glanced over at Esmerelda. He noticed her usual bright eyes looking faded away. Finally Pippin's voice spoke, "You all right...would you like to rest for a few minutes?" His expression on his face could not be seen because the moon had hidden itself away in the dark clouds...

Sam suddenly staggered. He felt extremely apprehensive, like when Frodo was in trouble. He said to Merry desperately, "Something's wrong. We need to catch up with the others! I don't know why, but I have a bad feeling that they won't make it to Rivendell. We MUST help them!" He dragged Merry to his horse, and, despite Merry's weight, lifted him up with great strength. He the jumped on the horse and they sprinted away into the darkness.
