"I understand your logic, Haldir." Luthien agreed, "I'm right behind you." The great door of the tower needed little force applied before it swung open on silent hinges. The entrance was plain, but it appeared that things hadn't been touched in many a lifetime. The dust was thick, and billowed around them in great clouds with every footstep. Directly in front of them was a winding staircase, that led up in a seemingly endless spiral.

"If it is going to be hidden in the most obvious place, then I suppose that staircase will lead us to the Palantir. Lead on, Haldir."

Haldir coughed and waved some dust away from his face. He peered around the dark and narrow tower too check for any doors or openings. There were a few large doors and a single staircase.

"Then the staircase it will be," he said, looking around once more in case there was a concealed door hidden anywhere. There appeared to be none. He stepped onto the first step of the tall staircase and his foot fell into an inch of soft dust. "This place is seemingly abandoned... but we mustn't be fooled by that." He quietly started walking up the dark staircase, leading the rest of the group in a single file and occasionally looking back to check that Meleth was doing alright.

"I think it only leads to once place," he whispered, looking up at the winding staircase. "I see no end from here. We have a long way to walk and I see no doors or openings from where I stand. What a tower..."

"Indeed," replied Meleth uneasily. "What a tower - only one way in, and therefore only one way out." She cast a worried glance behind her, hands clutching the mane of her horse until their knuckles were white. "It makes me uneasy."

Miriel was the last to climb the staircase. She followed the others, turning her head once in a while to check if noone was following them. She said nothing yet she felt something was wrong.. everything was too obvious and she felt they would get into trouble soon.

Luthien looked up at the stairs, which seemed to go on forever, "Perhaps this wasn't the best idea." She murmured, then added, "Meleth, how are you feeling so far?"

"Fine," was Meleth's short, if abrupt, answer. She was scanning the inside of the tower uneasily, eyes flicking restlessly from place to place. "I don't like it...there's only one way out."

Luthien nodded at Haldir's observation, "Then we might as well carry on from here. Lord Elrond placed this task upon us, who are we to be frightened away so easily? This palantir must be found one way or another. I am certain this was where it once rested, whether it still is has yet to be seen."
