Mort's sanity was slowly fading. He could only hold on for a few more moments. Don't! Let me out! Leave my life alone!
"That's jus' the way I talk..." replied Shooter to Dan's paranoid face.
His footsteps stopped. He noticed Shannon behind Dan. Mort was still smiling. He had a tense, predatory look. His was the smile of the wolf just before it closed hungry jaws on the unsuspecting rabbit.
"You’re so very pretty." Mort said to Shannon.

Shannon seemed a little taken aback by what Mort had just said to her, but she blushed nonetheless. "T-Thank you..." She said softly and then looked up to Dan, slowly. She didn't want him getting hurt, so she grabbed onto his hand and tugged on it slightly. "Dan, please go... find a hotel. I don't want you to stay here, I'll be fine." She said in almost a whisper to him.

Dan knew that Mort had never talked with an accent before...or had he ever noticed it? Doubt crept into his mind, but then he pushed it away. No.......Mort never had an accent......Mort was crazy.....yes....he was crazy....
Dan felt Shannon tug on his hand and his eyes flinched for a moment. He felt danger near and he couldn't leave her here with this man....even though Dan knew nothing about this woman....he knew it wasn't safe to leave her.
"Dude," Dan said firmly, "You need to step away from us. Step away...now." His voice wavered a bit, but Dan's feet stood firm and his eyes intensified.

Mort kept drawing in, his dead eyes staring at Shannon.
"I’ve been lookin' for one like ya'." said Mort as he placed two fingers on the brim of his hat.
To him, Dan was only an annoying mouse pulling the lion's tail.

Shooter smirked at Shannon and guzzled up her beauty in his eyes. "You are mighty perdy, miss. What say you and I get to know eachother better?" John said as he leaned one arm against the wall.

Shannon's eyes kept going back and forth between the two men. She didn't know what to say or expect. She swallowed hard and slowly stood up from where she had been seated on the floor. She kept her arms wrapped around herself and then finally let her eyes rest on Mort again. He had changed, but hopefully... he wouldn't hurt her.

Mort pushed Dan. Not harsh, but just enough for the object to get out of his way.
Mort kept coming towards Shannon. Slowly. Relentlessly. Heavy steps. Enjoying the suspense. Grinning more than ever as he saw comprehension enter her eyes. He flexed his hands.
"Ya' have such pretty hair," he said.

Dan hobbled sideways and regained his footing within seconds. Looking at the fear in Shannon's eyes and the lust in Mort's, Dan lunged forward and angrily pushed Mort away from her. "I SAID, stay away from her! Don't come near her again!" Dan said defensively.
Making no eye contact with Shannon, Dan said, "Go on, Shannon. Get out of here. Get out of the house."

Shannon stared at Mort and then swallowed hard. "No..." She whispered to Dan and stayed against the wall. She was almost in some sort of trance with Mort and she didn't know how. She stared into his eyes, even though she was a little scared. She bit her lower lip softly and continued watching him closely.

What am I doing? No Shooter stop! My god stop! Mort felt himself slowly, slowly fall into reality.
A part of him wondered if he really was loosing his mind. This could not be the Mort Rainey who murdered those four people. His eyes were brown chips of ice.
Then he saw the knife, and the sight of it was like a blast of furnace heat that turned his doubts to steam and blew them away. The knife was fixed to his belt, over his left hip. It was in an open sheath, and he could free it simply by popping the metal snap on a single narrow leather strap. In one second, the blade could be slipped from the holder and wrapped tightly in his fist; in two seconds, it could be jammed deep into Dan's soft belly, slicing through the warm meat and jelly organs, letting loose the precious store of blood. He meant to kill him...and then her.
"I’ve wanted to kill you since I first saw you," Rainey said approaching Dan. "Just wanted to get at you."
(Sorry. If it's too violent soundin' mates. I'll pull back a bit?)

Dan's eyes grew wide at Mort's words. This guy really was dangerous and crazy! Oh my gosh.....things were not going well.......this was not good....
Backing up, Dan covered Shannon with his tall body, "Get back! Get away or I'll have to kill you myself!" He then picked up a nearby lamp on the dresser next to him and Shannon and held it up in the air menacingly.
"Shannon, run! Get out of here! NOW! I mean it! NOW!" he shouted at the top of his lungs.

Shannon felt tears reach her eyes and swallowed hard. "I'm not leaving you here alone, Dan!" She yelled back to him and shook her head. She looked back to Mort and stared at him. "WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU?!" She cried.
