Salma had only set a few steps upon the deck, when suddenly she was forcefuly thrown against the rail. A low hiss, like an angered snake, crossed her lips when she realised it was Andrea. "What a coward you are," she spat. "Attacking someone who's turned her back on you." Salma scrambled back to her feet, ignoring a sharp pain in her side and looked with fiery eyes at the blond.
"Your crew?" she asked mockingly. "You think you're quite in charge here do you? Only because you're bedding the Captain?" The Mexican woman let out a scornful laugh. "Judging from your aggresive behaviour the only reason he sleeps with you is because otherwise your knife will be on his throat. I think that your Captain lets me stay because he's sick of you.."
Salma was not impressed by Andrea's threats and even less by her accusations.
"I did not harm anybody except perhaps for your oversized ego or inflame your jealousy. You on the other hand havebehaved in hatefully from the start."
And with those words she turned her back on Andrea, having no more to say and walked away.

Coward. Because you're bedding the Captain. Your knife will be on his throat. He's sick of you...
The words ran through Andrea's head, over and over again. She was blind with rage, the only things she could her was the sound of her heavy breathing and het heartbeat thumping in her ears like drums. She didn't know what she was doing or where she was going, her body moving automatically. She felt her legs moving forwards, her arms reaching out to shove the girl to the floor. She found herself on top of her, fists throbbing as they made contact with any part of Salma's body she could reach. Blinding white pain ripped through the jaw as she felt the girl retaliate and split her lip open. The drumming in her ears grew louder until it blocked out any other sound. She wasn't sure how much time had passed but she became aware of someone gripping at her back and an arm around her waist, assumingly trying to remove her from Salma. As she brought her hand back for another punch she felt her elbow come into contact with something soft, but she was beyond caring. Her hands found the girl's throat and she began to squeeze, willing the life out of her. It was then that she felt a lurch on her abdomen and the world literally turned upside down until she was staring at someone's legs and behind.

(I haven't gotten anything back from Neri yet, but I thought I would introduce Jonah because I've been having ideas for him all day.)

A tall man walked down through the docks of Tortuga, then again, walked was not the best word for it. His walk was a carefully planned out meander so filled with confidence that he hardly needed anything else to get attention, although his looks certainly did not hurt for that either. His dark hair was cut shorter than most around and his blue eyes were two bright specks in an otherwise sun-darkened complexion. On his lips was a vague smirk as if he was teasing someone that he knew all the rules and was refusing to tell.

Jonah Gow was in a particularly good mood. His newest paycheck had just weighed anchor in his own sick paradise of Tortuga. Jack Sparrow was a wanted man, at the top of the list of several organizations - several previous offers had been made, but Jonah had held out - but the richest was most certainly the East India Trading Company.

"Of course," he thought with a lackadaisical glance at his nails and a derisive sniff, "anyone would be the enemy of that organization should they have the gumption to do what that man did."

Better for him though was that one of his favorite (when she didn't speak) prostitutes was rumored to be a friend, and that confirmation made him...giddy, he supposed the word was as good as any. It made his job so much easier, an in was always something he wanted. This job would be like stealing a loaf of bread from a blind, cripple without the ability to speak. Far too easy...

"But infinitely more rewarding," he said out loud with a hollow laugh.

Then he spotted the group, the man with mutton chops, the captain and his swaying dramatics, the harlot with an appropriate hair color. It was here that he began to jog and all of his swagger and confidence melted away to give rise to the persona he used in Tortuga.

"Chistine!" He said in what sounded to be a breathless manner, he even heaved and put his hands on his knees to show how much he had been running. Then he recovered and smiled warmly.

"I've been lookin' for you everywhere. I thought'd missed you. Belinda said you'd already gone. Lucky for me that you hadn't yet or I'd be stuck here..." He blinked and turned to the other two men standing there. He looked down at his feet which shifted and he hoped that it looked like he was trying to hide a flush of embarrassment.

"Sorry, sirs. I'm presumptuous, I had hoped to barter for passage on the ship. With your permission, of course." His words came out quickly and he could see Christine grinning in the most disgusting fashion with uninhibited light of affection in her eyes which quickly shifted to pleading as she looked to the Captain.

"Ugh," he thought inwardly and his real self wanted to shudder with revulsion and toss the redhead into the sea next to them. "If I am forced to deal with a simpering ninny like this for the entirety of the trip I shall go mad. Perhaps she will have an accident along the way."

His inner monologue brought to the surface a real smile and instead of tossing the woman into the water he drew her under his arm which, strangely enough for the jumpy woman, she seemed to accept with a reluctant smile - at any rate, it was certainly a far cry from the near terror she had responded to Jack's touch.

A second time Salma was thrown to the floor but this time she'd expected that it would happen. Anger which had stirred within her now exploded and her body became numb with anything but her rage. She was vaguely aware that Andrea's fists were hitting her on all possible places, which at that moment only seemed to enlarge her own fury. Her fist connected with the blonde's cheek and with her long legs, she tried to kick her attacker off her. Salma did not perceive that someone was trying to check Andrea nor was aware of anything else around her but the blond pirate who'd now locked both of her hands around her throat.
Her eyes grew wide with surprise and a hoarse whisper escaped her lips. "No.. stop.." Her own hands grasped for those of Andrea but all strength seemed to flow out of her slim body. Pictures, people and colours, all became a blur and seemed to spin around her. After what seemed minutes Salma noticed that Andrea was dragged off her and the woman quickly gasped for air. Forms and figures became more solid as her breathing became regular again. All at once she felt the pain of Andrea's frequent blows and she remained lying on the deck while the unwanted tears started fall down her face. Curling up like a ball, with her hands still on her throat, the woman lay still and cried.

Robyn looked at Eve in disbelief - sure, they hadn’t been friends for long, but they had exchanged secrets and for the entire time they’d known each other, nothing had been said in the presence of others. “I won’t tell a single soul, especially Ed. Not if ye don’t want me to. I swear it to Davy Jones’ Locker… or whoever it is that owns it now. And it ain’t stupid Eve… I think of it as sweet, to tell the truth.” The blonde paused to push strands of loose hairs from her eyes. “Well… he has known Varianna for quite some time… nearly a decade, I believe. Two of ’em have been through a lot together…” Robyn turned, her back pressed against the ship’s railing, and crossed her arms over her chest. “I wouldn’t stop hopin’ though - Vari changes like the wind… no telling what she’ll do next. An’ that may entail her dropping Ed like a hot coal.”

-----------------------------

As they lay on the floor in the middle of the cabin below deck, Vari and Ed felt their hearts beating in unison; unspoken words of love and lust passing between the two in a silent conversation. Green eyes met hazel and lips connected once more, kisses becoming more urgent and needy. When they parted, Vari ran her hand down the side of Ed’s face, fingers becoming lost in his untamed beard, and back up to trace soft lips. He closed his eyes and after a sharp intake of breath came the words, “What say we take this to my cabin?” A devilish smile was Vari’s reply and she laughed as he scooped her up bridal-style and carried her below deck, slamming Ed’s cabin door closed and securing the latch.

-----------------------------

Hector was jolted from his sleep, a thin trail of drool running down his chin. When had he dozed off? Nevertheless, he groaned in annoyance and wiped his face with the back of his sleeve as he stood. It was then that sharp ears picked up on voices outside of his cabin, what sounded like two people arguing. He rubbed his temple, trying to will away the growing headache he had, scowling as the voices only became louder. When he could take it no longer, Hector marched across his cabin and threw open the door, coming face-to-face with the sight of Andrea attacking Salma. “WHAT BE YE DOIN’?!” he roared, tearing the blonde from the Mexican, only to have Andrea’s elbow jab him in the face. Hector ignored the pain radiating from the hit, instead scooping her up and tossing her over his shoulder as she continued to struggle. Even so, he managed to keep his grip on her, practically tossing her across the room as they re-entered his cabin. Hector stood over Andrea’s body on the floor and roughly picked her up, staring her straight in the eye. “Care to inform me as t’ what that li’l display was about?!”

-----------------------------

[[Again, if you don’t like Man/Man don’t read this post!!! :bones: ]]

Soren remained still as Salma ascended the stairs, followed closely by a furious Andrea. His forehead was pressed against the wall above Dante’s shoulder and he shifted slightly to trail kisses across Dante’s jawbone, before capturing his lips again. “I’m afraid… yer gonna have to prove it to me - right here, right now…” Soren breathed, eyes darkened with an untamed lust. It was so uncharacteristic of him to be this dominant, but with Dante trapped like this and the adrenaline flowing through his veins, Soren was quickly losing any control he once had…

[[Pan, you could probably get one more post in so that this doesn’t get too inappropriate and/or raunchy; after which we’ll have to continue it via PM ;-) ]]

Linny and Eli had taken up residence on a pair of barrels, Linny's legs hanging over the edge and not quite touching the floor. She prided herself on being the youngest pirate on the ship and loved to show people who doubted her of her skill.

Elijah had challenged her once and he had been completely embarrassed when she had knocked him straight onto his bum.

They sat next to each other, Eli sipping on a bottle of whiskey that he had found and Loraline biting into the skin of a red apple. A companionable silence fell over them as they stared off into the open seas.

------------

"Where the hell did everyone go?" Aurora had been tiptoeing around the deck, making sure her feet didn't touch any of the lines. It had been quite a sight to see but when she tumbled for a last time unable to make a move without stepping on the cracks of the deck she saw that there was no one around.

"Well... that's fine enough for me..." She tipped her hat, lips curling into wide smirk and reached for some of the ropes nearest her. With laughter she began swinging on them, feet kicking off the side of the ship and twirling to and fro.

--------------

[Yay! :bones: Warning]

Whatever had caused this change in Soren he was quite thankful for it. Dante loved being aggressive but it was nice to have Soren take the lead and take from him what he wanted. It caused his skin to crawl in a most delicious way and his body to burn with the heat of his passion for the blond.

"If that is what you wish..." Dante whispered in a lustful husk, eyes darkening even more and one leg raising to wrap around Soren's waist, booted foot hooking around Soren's leg to pull him closer.

"Then you shall have it."

[Sounds good Aratman <3]

Salma slowly got on her feet and lowered her hands. Red marks on her throat still showed the inprint of Lothy's hands. Quickly she wiped away her tears and without looking at the other pirates on the deck she paced over to the bow of the ship, where she slumped down.
As she rested her head on her knees, new tears welled up in her eyes. Never in her life had she ever been so unhappy as she was now. Although she'd been used to violence, Lothy's assault had somehow shocked her. Salma had always been convinced that she was not the cause of the violence used against her but now doubt crept upon her. Her hopes on future prospects seemed shattered. The mocking reactions on her past profession and her own inability to adapt her behaviour had proved now that she was not accepted even by pirates..
Salma closed her red-rimmed eyes and tried to shut out her own thoughts as well. Now get yourself back together.. she thought. Her individualism took over, every time she needed to survive. She did not need the others to like her, she'd always managed on her own. She did need to talk to the Captain.
The Mexican woman sprang to her feet with fresh energy, attempting to ignore the renewed stinging bruise on her face, and made her way over to the cabin of the Captain and only after a slight hesitation, she knocked on the door.

Eve smiled slightly at Robyn. “You’ve been so kind to me since we first met, Robyn,” she said. “I know that you’ll keep it a secret.” She paused as she listened to her friend continue; in the following moments all kinds of different emotions flickered through her mind, but the one most prominent, the one that she always found especially difficult to shake off, was complete and utter despair. She shook her head finally, her smile disappearing. “Even if Varianna does let him go, he won’t stop having feelings for her,” she said, softly. “Who could blame him? And she’ll always go back to him.” Her head drooped slightly, but her voice continued steadily. “Besides, if in some magical dream world he ever did stop loving her then he would never think of me. He would never even notice me.” It was at this moment that her voice broke, and she dropped her head properly, her fair hair swinging forward to hide her face. She made a small gesture with her hands. “Look at me! I’m a wreck.”
If there was one thing about Eve, it was that she utterly failed to recognise her own beauty. True, she would never have Vari’s dark, dramatic looks, but she was lovely in her own way, and she did not need Ed to consider her so to be beautiful. But she could not see it. If she failed to be what he wanted, and what he wanted in one word was Varianna, then she could only consider herself ugly, and unwanted.
“So you see,” she said finally, raising her head to meet Robyn’s eye, “it’s no use hoping.” She gave a tiny smile, although her eyes shone with tears. Brushing her damp eyes, she tried to recover her composure. “I’m sorry to burden you with all of this. I don’t mean to sound so silly.” She cleared her throat. “I shall just keep well out of his way, well out of Varianna’s way. It might not hurt so much then.”

~~~
Marianne and Guin strolled up onto the upper deck, driven by curiosity, though the brawl was well over now, Andrea having been dragged into the captain’s cabin by Barbossa himself. It was lucky that he had intercepted; heaven only knew what Andrea would have done to Salma otherwise.
Stretching, Marianne glanced around the deck. “She was asking for it. Salma made an enemy out of every single crew member the minute she arrived,” she commented, her blank, unmoved expression a complete mismatch for the energy of her tone.
Guin raised an eyebrow at the younger woman’s remark. “Maybe. But you know what Miss Andrea’s like when she’s angry. She has the ferocity of a wolf; she could have really hurt that girl.” The red-haired woman cast her blue gaze over the deck, noting the crew members about, until her clear sight finally fell on Salma, knocking on the door of the captain’s cabin. Marianne had noticed it, too. “Not such a good idea,” Guin murmured.
“Well, you’re the peacemaker. Go and stop her,” Marianne said.
Guin smiled at her, shrugging her shoulders and readjusting her shawl. “Blessed are the peacemakers.” Leaving Marianne’s side, Guin walked up to Salma and gently tapped her on the shoulder.
Guin wasn’t stupid; she knew that this girl was after the captain’s favour. Such an attempt would only cause further disharmony among the crew; or in other words, it would make everyone’s lives a living hell, and all for one reason: Andrea. She smiled serenely at the Mexican girl, her expression utterly peaceful.
“I rather think the captain’s busy,” she stipulated.
Andrea yanked herself from Barbossa’s grip but remained where she was standing, inches away from him. Her gaze burned into his with the anger that remained inside her. “I was putting that wench in her place.” She managed to hiss through gritted teeth. “She’s been causing nothing but trouble amongst the crew since she came aboard.” She turned away, trying to calm herself but nothing seemed to work. She settled for lashing out and kicking over one of the chairs.
“My anger just got the better of me, okay?” The more agitated she got the stronger her accent was. “The way she was acting, the things she said, I just snapped.” She looked down at her hands that had been wrapped around Salma’s throat not minutes ago. “I actually wanted to kill her.” Her voice broke at that point which angered her more. She would not cry, not in front of him at least. The anger escalated once again. She felt like she was falling apart.
A tall, dark figure swaggered over the docks of Tortuga and sat down on the far side of the docks. In the soft light of the rising moon one could see that the figure was a man, but judging from his apparel; a black shirt, black pair of trousers and a dark coat, the man did not look like a pirate or someone who belonged in Tortuga. The bottle of rum in his hand, the pistol in its holster and longsword, visibly sheathed in his belt, suggested otherwise.
The man, who was named Kaj, did in fact not belong in Tortuga. The sea was his home, though this had not always been so. He had a name in Tortuga and the suspicious gazes and cries of fear of the inhabitants of the pirate-hole at the sight of his appearance was one of the many reasons for Kaj to drink in solitude. He set the bottle to his lips and poured in the liquor, desperate to numb his pain. His pain was a constant in his life, never to fade away or to decrease, yet it was no pain from a physical injury. He was overcome with guilt, whenever he was reminded of the sweet laughter of his girls or the soft touch of his wife... Evelynn.
Kaj took another swig of rum, his mind clouded with grief as he longed with heart and soul for his beloved ones. With a quick swing of the hand he took his gun and loaded it. The fluid movement was performed almost automatically, without further thought. Kaj glanced at the silent ocean with tears in his eyes, before closing them. As he put the pistol against his temple, he whispered: I love you..
With all his heart he hoped for moments of comfort as he pulled the trigger. There was a short click when the pistol jammed, and the sound of waves breaking on the shore, the dimmed cries and shouts from town. Kaj opened his eyes and looked up at the starful sky; a tear running down his face. He understood now. He was to remain and to live out his days, like Prometheus eternally punished for his crimes and tortured by his conscious.
As Kaj lay down on the dock, his pistol still in his hand, his bottle of rum slipped off and fell into the water. Staring blankly at the dark sky a soft whisper escaped his lips: "Forgive me.."
-------------------------
Salma looked up at the blond, whom she'd not seen around before. "I do not care," she retorted, annoyed by the sudden interest of the woman. "He'll make time for me." When her knock was not answered she forcefully opened the door, eventhough Guin stood still on its doorstep.
"Captain," the Mexican woman started, completely ignoring Andrea and unbothered by the fact that she was interrupting Andrea's tirade. "I need to have a word with you - now."
[Okay, I just wait to have introduce Kaj. I'm sorry if his post was kinda depressing , but he's just very depressed :P If anyone wants to find him and interact, please go ahead. ;) ]
Hector opened his mouth to reply to the mess of a blonde that was standing before him, feeling a slight understanding and compassion welling up from deep inside him. But just as he was about to say something, the door swung open and hit against the wall with a crash! All of the sympathy left Hector’s gray-blue eyes and he sent a glare in Salma’s direction that would make even the most callous pirate flinch. Gritting his yellowed and rotting teeth, he stormed over to the Mexican girl and let her have it. He grabbed her by the neck with his left hand, and held her against the wooden door so that he feet were dangling off of the ground. “Fer too long things’ve been goin’ awry aboard me ship… some problem’s the crew an’ I’ve been havin’… an’ according to ’Drea, the source of said problems be you, Miss Salma. I think it best if ye get yerself off of this ship an’ leave well enough alone… And since ye won’t go willingly, I’m going to have to see to it myself!” He removed her from the wall, still holding her by the neck, and physically threw her out of his cabin and onto the main deck. “Good riddance to ye!” Before he slammed the cabin door and made sure it was securely locked. With a sigh, Hector turned and rested his back against the wood, eyes closed. After a moment or two of silence, he cracked his eyes open and peered at Andrea across the room. “Now, what was it ye were sayin’?”
------------------
Vari sighed deeply as she watched Edward sit on the edge of the bed, his back glistening in the dim candlelight. Pulling the covers with her, she sat behind him and rested her chin on his shoulder. “I don’t know why I didn’t see it earlier…”
He looked at her with a bewildered look. “See what?” Edward took her hand in his and gave it a gentle kiss.
“How much I’m in love with ye, Ed,” she replied, hazel eyes sparkling with the aftermath of their loving.
“Maybe you didn’t see it because… you’re a free spirit. You’ve always done what you wanted and never sat down to consider things. And every time I wanted to confess how I felt, you were with another man. First with Richard… an’ then we were separated by the storm… and when I finally found you again, you and Joe…” he bit his lip at the man’s name, trying to choose his words carefully. Instead of continuing, he turned and searched his overcoat pocket until he came across a bundle of cloth. “I know I wasn’t your first, but I want to be your last,” he said, carefully unwrapping the package. Vari watched intently as Edward produced a golden ring with a large ruby gem inset. “Varianna Pierce… I want you to be Mrs. Varianna Blackhaven… will you marry me?”
Vari’s breath hitched in her throat as she was suddenly taken aback by his forwardness. However it only took seconds to sink in, and she felt a genuine smile creeping across her face. “Edward, ye don’t have to ask twice. Of course I’ll marry you.” His calloused hands slid the cool metal onto her ring finger where it fit perfectly, before he laced their fingers together. The red stone glittered like fire in the dark cabin and Vari could only sigh contently. “I love you,” he told her, before their lips met in a sweet kiss.
“Oh Ed… I want to show everyone - I want to be married tomorrow; I can hardly wait another second!” she beamed, feeling happier than she’d ever felt in her entire life.
------------------
Robyn placed a hand on Eve’s shoulder. “You’re not a wreck - you’re a beautiful young woman, Eve. Both of us are. And one day, we’ll find men who can prove that to us. Because believe me, I’ve never thought much of myself, to be honest.” She would have spoken more comforting words to the blonde, but it was at that moment that Edward and Vari set foot on deck; and they were walking right towards the two.
“Robyn,” Vari breathed, “look!” She held out her left hand, the index finger bearing the engagement ring. “We’re getting married, Ed an’ I!”
Oh no… Robyn’s sea-green eyes flickered from Eve back to Varianna, and the glittering stone on her hand. “It’s…beautiful… We’re really happy for the both of you, aren’t we, Eve?” She nudged her gently, knowing that it was absolutely killing the girl inside but she at least had to hold up a false façade for the time being.
------------------
[[And continuing after our PM’ed scene… :bones: No more warnings, mates. We shall be good fangirls, right Pan? ;-)]]
Soren sighed, brushing damp strands of hair from Dante’s forehead. “I’m so sorry I doubted you, Dante… I just… I couldn’t - I mean, if you would’ve left me for her…” he looked down and shook his head. “But I know better now. I know that this; that we are forever.” Soren squeezed Dante’s hand lovingly before pulling his lover close in an embrace that he never wanted to end.
[Introducing: The triplets!]
"Oui, Vince do ye see that." Natalie thrust her finger forward, head resting on her brothers shoulder as she tried to direct his view. "Right there on the horizon... ye can't miss it."
Isabella had been resting against the ships side when she heard her sister and brother arguing about what they were seeing. For a few minutes she just let their bickering surround her, a familiar and comforting sound but after a while she decided to intervene.
"It's a ship, a pirate ship in the distance." Isabella said as soon as she stepped on the opposite side of where Natalie was standing. Three identical pairs of hazel eyes staring at the black flags blowing in the sea breeze. They were not alone on the seas and that was a very encouraging thought.
A new voice broke through the triplets thoughts and they all turned to look at the woman behind them. Clad in regal colors of creme and blue, though worn with the stains of piracy. "Then shall we make way towards the ship? I dare say it would be nice to meet others. Although ye be a very merry crew." Bethany's lips twisted upwards in a grin much to the amusement of the Rivero's.
They were a strange crew; Natalie, Vincent, and Isabella had docked in Tortuga and their first thoughts had been to find their father who had abandoned them but that was before they ran into Bethany Caldwell. A royal who left her family and had regaled them with tales of the sea.
Natalie and Isabella were easily swayed but it took some well-chosen words and a bottle or two of rum to get Vincent to decide that they would sail the seas in search of adventure instead of opening old wounds.
It had been a rough start but the four lasses and Vincent had bonded and were now a small but loyal crew to one another. Though they weren't the only ones on the ship. Along the way they had seen a small ship, well more like a boat floating along the edges of the Caribbean. Within this boat were a few pirates, they were the only survivors left they had told Vincent and the rest of the crew but they said nothing else. Within this small boat had been Zoe, Shiloh, and Lance. There were more but they did not see it fit to join and so Vincent had left them. Their troubles were not his concern and so their ship of four became seven.
Shiloh was currently resting in the lower decks, body rigid in bed with a pillow thrown over his face. The man had still not found the right equilibrium to be on the sea without getting ill so he was trying his best to sleep it off and let himself adjust.
[I hope you don't mind Lance being one of the survivors. If you have other plans for his arrival let me know and I can edit it.]
Aurora-Rose was mid-swing when Varianna's words traveled across the deck. It wasn't hard for anyone in the near vicinity to miss the excitement coming from the dark-haired pirate.
Married... An idea that never really processed in Aurora-Rose's mind. The thought of binding oneself to another for eternity did not settle with her, although she did not know why.
Abandoning her childish play she moved towards the congregation and stepped towards her old friend. "Ed is a lucky man to have ye, Vari. You have my congrats!"
[[As good as I can be :bones:]]
Dante understood Soren's words completely, because he knew if their positions were changed then he would have been the one doubting no matter how much he knew that Soren loved him. To be a pirate was to have a wary trust for those around you... it was just in the nature.
Soren's words were comforting all the same and he was just glad that the blond truly understood his feelings and knew that this... they were meant for eternity.
"Do not doubt me, and I will not doubt you... I love you." Was all Dante said, resting his head in the crook of Soren's neck and snuggling in the sweat slicked skin for a moment and then pulled back.
"I think I heard something about a marriage. You know how I love weddings. Come..." Linking his fingers through Soren's ringed digits he moved away from the wall and the stairs that he would never see with the same eye again and moved to the upper decks.
[[That’s fine Pan deary.]]
Andrea watched in almost disbelief as Salma barged through the cabin door. Her green eyes went cold and flashed with anger as she took a step towards the girl, ready to finish it once and for all, but the captain got to her first. She stared wide-eyed as he threw her out on to the deck, slammed the door shut and locked it with a click. They stood there few a couple of minute before he cracked his eyes open and looked at her.
“Now, what was it ye were sayin’?”
In hindsight she didn’t really know what came over her, it could have been the emotional rollercoaster she had taken in such a short time, it could have been the look in his eyes or it could have been a combination of both, but before she realised what she was doing, Andrea had covered the space between them and smashed her lips to his. Unconsciously they moved away from the door and she took in his musky rum smell, the feel of his lips and the tickle of his beard. Something in her clicked and she quickly broke away, questioning in her mind what the hell she’d just done. She turned away from him and unlocked the door as hurriedly as she could, letting it slam behind her. She cursed repeatedly and strode across the deck, trying her best to ignore everyone around her until she heard Varianna’s exclamation. She looked up.
“M-married?” She asked in shock. “You’re getting married?” She looked down at the beautiful gold ring glistening on her hand. It felt like a dagger had been forced into Andrea’s stomach. “I-er, congratulations! Would you excuse me?” She turned away from the group, hoping none of them would see the tears starting to glisten in her eyes. Hurrying down the stairs to the lower decks she practically threw herself through her cabin door, locked it and fell to her knees with a sob, collapsing against her cot. All the emotion she had been holding back hit her hard and she finally fell to pieces, sobs racking her body. She’d never be married, not anymore and even if there were the slightest chance, even if anyone she truly loved asked her, she’d never be able to give them sons or daughters. What’s more she’d gone too far, she’d kissed the captain, crossed that line and she feared the consequences.
[[I’m assuming this is an alternate universe to KAWEOTH, as many things would be different if it wasn’t. But if it’s okay with you Pan shall we say Zoe and Shiloh didn’t join up with the crew of the Black Pearl in this universe?]]
Lance leant on the railings of the ship, watching as the Pearl glided through the waves majestically ahead of them. They were catching up slowly, but he knew of the legends. A ship with black sails, there weren’t many ships with black sails around, so he was convinced this was the same ship. If the crew of the Pearl realised they were being followed then this bucket of bits wouldn’t stand a chance. He said as much to Zoe, who was standing beside him.
“Aye.” She answered solemnly. “I’ve heard of the Pearl. I don’t think they’ll take too kindly to us, if we ever do catch up with them that is, but we’ve got to atleast try.”
“Indeed. Where’s your beau anyway?” He asked her, referring to Shiloh Barker.
“I don’t know what you mean.” She blushed and walked off. Lance smiled wryly after her. She knew exactly what he meant.
Zoe knocked gently on Shiloh’s cabin door. “Shy? Shy are you in there?” When she got no answer she opened the door and peered round spotting the man in question on his bed with a pillow over his face. “Oh Shy.” She sighed and walked over to the bed, perched herself on the side of it and place a hand on his arm. “Are you feeling okay?
Green eyes watched from the shadows as Liam and Noirin went back above deck. Kayla sighed and sat on a barrel of rum. She sympathised with Noirin, having to disguise herself as a man so she wouldn’t be discovered, and it broke her heart knowing that she couldn’t reveal herself to them, her own flesh and blood. Not that they would believe she was the lost daughter of their cousin. Since finding out her birth mother’s identity she’d learnt as much as she could about the Costello family, paid the servants good money to bring her information. When one of them came to her with news that her cousins were planning to find her mother, she leapt at the chance and followed them. She didn’t know what she would do once they did find Andrea, that would have to be decided later. For now, she just had to concentrate on keeping up her disguise.
Eve smiled at Robyn, despite the tears glistening in her grey-blue eyes, finding a little comfort in her friend’s words. “Thank you,” she said quietly. “You’re a good friend, Robyn.” She couldn’t help hoping there was some truth in what she had said; Eve had always dreamed of finding someone just right, someone who understood her completely, and didn’t just dismiss her as a quiet, mouse-like girl. Even though she had been hurt many times in her life, Eve was wholly capable of giving her heart. However, she had never dreamed of presenting such a precious gift to someone who was not free to give theirs in return.
Leaning against the ship rail, she might have said more to Robyn, but all in one moment, her mouth went dry at the sight of Vari and Edward walking towards them.
No one could help who they loved. It wasn’t a decision that could just be taken; sometimes Eve wasn’t sure she even wanted to be in love with Edward, but as it was, she seemed to have no choice. Already her heart was beating so hard that it almost hurt, and her throat felt dry and closed up, so that if she had tried to speak, she would have croaked.
Eve heard what Vari was saying, but as if from a very long way off; her voice sounded distant, and the glittering ring flashing and twinkling on her hand did not seem real somehow. Only when Robyn gently nudged her did the momentous news fully sink in.
…Married?
Something had to be wrong here. No, they couldn’t be. Someone had to have made some mistake. They must have… but no, the scene unfolding before Eve’s eyes was real, and nothing could have anguished her more than Vari’s joy.
Taking in the sight of the happy couple, Eve could not find it in her heart to hate Varianna, despite everything. She looked positively radiant with happiness; for a moment Eve imagined herself in the older woman’s place, by Ed’s side, beaming from ear to ear.
Realising that she had to say something, Eve came back to her senses and smiled. Only Robyn, the only one she had confided in, could possibly know what it cost her to smile.
“Yes,” she said, “I hope you’ll both be very happy.”
Though outwardly, Eve was as self-composed and soft-spoken as she always was, inside she felt so miserable that words could hardly express such acute desolation. Her gaze went towards Ed, and she felt a sharp pang of grief.
She had known sadness before, of course – her father’s death, her mother’s rejection of her, having to leave her brother and sister. Eve knew that she should have been used to it by now. But nothing could reconcile her to the fact that Ed would never, ever return her feelings.
Ever since she had first laid eyes on him, she had loved him and admired him. To her, no one seemed as marvelous or as handsome as he was. But it was not just his looks; it could never have been, it could never be something as superficial. It went deeper than humanly possible, right to Eve’s heart which found it so easy to trust and to love Ed, going against her past bitter experiences which had hardened her regard for most people.
Common sense and emotion had clashed, and there had been no way for common sense, which had told her that Ed loved Vari, to win. This was not the fancy of some lovesick girl. Often Eve felt much, much older than her twenty-three years; life had not been kind to her.
None of the conflict and pain Eve was experiencing could be apparent to Ed or Vari; and that was the best way to leave things.
Guinevere crossed the deck towards the scene which was drawing quite a lot of attention. She only needed to look at the beautiful ring Vari wore to guess the source of the excitement. Smiling, she felt like laughing out loud; not of unkindness of any sort, but mere humour. Guin was thirty-one years of age and highly skeptical of the notion that most people liked to call “love”. Her belief in true love between anyone had been worn out long ago when she was just a girl – and if anyone had known of past events of her life, no one could blame her for it.
However, there was no denying how joyous both Vari and Ed looked, so she joined the group and admired the engagement ring.
“How beautiful,” she remarked, genuinely approving of the finery marking such an occasion. “Congratulations! Seems there’ll be a wedding on board. I’m sure the captain will enjoy acting the clergyman.”
Her bright blue gaze flickered towards Robyn and Eve for a moment, and settled on the second girl. It had not missed her perceptive eye that whenever the young woman was anywhere near Ed she blushed and made an excuse to escape. However, today she seemed to be making a remarkably good imitation of someone who was genuinely happy for the engaged couple.
Poor child, Guin thought idly.
Marianne was just walking towards the happy scene, carrying a bottle of rum, when Andrea rushed past her down the stairs of the lower decks, and narrowly missed colliding straight into Marianne.
Marianne raised her eyebrows in her usual impassive fashion and strolled over to the railings of the ship where Robyn and Eve stood. She had caught most of the conversation from afar, and had no strong feelings one way or the other about it.
Marianne was something of an enigma on board the Pearl; none knew very much of her history, or what was going on inside her head, only that she was tall, slender, blonde-haired, always wore black and nearly always seemed to be smoking a pipe. She was twenty-four but seemed much older in her outlook on life; turning a cheerful smile towards Eve, who she now stood beside, she leaned against the railings.
Marianne had been married at sixteen and then widowed at twenty-one, but she knew it was useless to resent all marriages just for that. She would never regret having married her husband John; even though it had caused her nothing but heartache in the end.
Raising her bottle of rum, Marianne’s elegant features shifted into her version of a smile; half-sarcastic, but genuinely harmless and well-meant. “Here’s to love and marriage!”
