Miranda looked up as she, too, heard the hoofbeats. She looked out the window to check if it was her father and Ben.

Miranda nodded and went out to meet them. She bade the Martins and Elizabeth good-bye, then went back to town with her father.
About two weeks later, Miranda was sitting on a couch quietly reading when her father came into the room and said, "Go and hide, Mira."
"What?" she asked nervously.
"I said go and hide. GO!"
She ran to the false cupboard, hiding inside it. Through the crack in the doors, she observed the scene. The British were there. Pillaging and rampaging through the city. They suddenly burst in, and she jumped. Her father went forward bravely, and a cold-looking man stabbed him in the chest. She gasped loudly, but a cannon's fire hid it perfectly. Her eyes flooded, but fear held her back. They took what they felt like, and left. She managed to sneak out and run to the back door. She ran for what felt like hours, but finally reached the Martin farm, exhausted. She could see two or three figures running out to meet her.

Elizabeth, Margaret, and Thomas had seen Miranda running toward the Martin's farm. Elizabeth came forward. "Miranda, what is it?" she asked.

"Elizabeth!" called Miranda. "It's them - it's the Redcoats - they raided the town - and they, they killed father..." she was hysterical with fear and shock.

Elizabeth sighed as she looked at Miranda. "I'm afraid it's starting." she said to Ben. She meant that the war was coming down south now, which many of the Southerners feared.

Miranda ran to the window. It was some of the leftover raiders, but they were riding to the river and bypassed the plantation. She sighed and sat back down. "I shall write my uncle," she said, staring out the window, "He lives in Virginia. He can come and collect me."
