"Well, as you know, the previous head of the East India Trading Company passed away due to a heartattack last week. He had no heirs to inherit the company," Lord Bellings spoke slowly, continuing to stare into the burning fire. "Many of the men who are employed there do not hold their positions as long as you have. You've proven to be faithful and dedicated time after time, Anthony," here he looked into his friend's face, "and something tells me you will continue to do well for many years to come. So, it is now that I ask you; will you accept the much sought-after position of head of the East India Company?"

-----------

Through her tears, Keyara glared daggers at Cutler, but said nothing and continued to act hurt. Even if Cutler wouldn't buy it, she knew her father would, and that was all that mattered.

"Le' me tell you something, boy - around here, it's best to keep your impressions and opinions to yourself; could land yourself in a whole lot of trouble," Mr. Cantrell explained, making odd gestures with his fork still in hand. " 'sides, it's getting too late for the two of you to be bickering with each other. The three of you need sleep - bed in one hour." He tossed some fat from the meat to Moon and Bel, who were waiting at the end of the table, and they devoured it hungrily. "Please don't make me regret taking you in, Cutler, if only for a night or so."

Jack's eyes popped out a little and he straightened up, flashing her a toothy grin. He whipped his hat off his head and gave a low bow.

"Of course you don't mean it, luv. Now why don't you just run along and introduce me to your lovely family?" he made a shooing motion with his hand, and then stumbled ahead of her, singing loudly at the top of his lungs, to his very own version of "A Pirate's Life For Me."

Christine frowned and stepped in front of him. "You are not meeting anyone, Jack. Especially," she emphasized the word, "my family. Do you have any idea what they would think of me if you walked through that door? No, it is not going to happen, Jack Sparrow." She racked her brain trying to think of some way to get him to believe her. Sure, she had said it plenty of times before, but the boy hardly listened.

Christine groaned loudly. If anything, she knew that he wasn't just a drunk. She had seen him in his clever moments and she was fairly sure there had been at least one serious moment...maybe.

Reason. Maybe reason, she thought. "Jack, go back to Tortuga as soon as you can. Find yourself a ship and someone else to watch after you. Another girl, Gibbs for all I care. I am home now, and there is no reason for you to continue following me. I will even give you your rum, and then you will leave, right?" That's how it generally worked. She hoped it still did.

Anthony nodded, he had heard of the man’s death although he had not known him personally. He followed his friend’s eyes and looked into the fire as well. He could only anticipate where this was going, he fought against the smile which threatened to betray the serious moment. He knew it was coming. He knew it was. One man’s loss was another man’s gain. Even when he had heard of the former EITC’s head’s death he had been hopeful of getting the position himself. He returned his friend’s look and nodded sincerely. He wasn’t shocked in the slightest, but he still had to turn away again and let it all sink in. Him as head of the greatest Company in the world? Lord Beckett… “Yes,” he turned back to his friend and gave him a smile, “I would be a fool not to take it.”

_________

Cutler was severely taken aback by Mr. Cantrell’s strong, stern words. He had only had an adult talk to him like that a few times in his life. And most of those times the adult had been his father, who he ignored in the end anyway. His mother had always encouraged him to express his opinions no matter what. As if for example, he had heard her give her full opinion to her friends on some of the poorer women in London, accusing them of their dresses or homes. You were suppose to express yourself, right? And what made it worse was that Keyara was simply playing her father. This had to be one of the strangest families he had ever seen. Honestly, a set bedtime? Most of his life he had been able to go to bed when he pleased. His parents had always told him they trusted him to go to bed at a reasonable time. And when he was younger his nurse had always been a push over when it came to bedtime as well. At the moment, he couldn’t help but betray a look of shock and hurt. He was silent, looking down at his plate. If that’s the way Keyara wants it, he thought, that’s the way she can get it. He was sure he could out manipulate her father into getting what he wanted too. If she could do it, he sure as anything could.

Lord Bellings allowed a smile to creep across his face. "Very well. We shall draw up the papers in the morning and get everything squared away as soon as humanly possible. I foresee everything going as planned, my friend." He sunk down into the chair, placing his feet on the foot stool as if it were his own home. He had just become comfortable when he sat up again. "I nearly forgot, Anthony." Bellings dug around in his coat pocket before presenting the other man with an envelope. "There we are. The King is holding a masquerade ball on the 25th. Only London's finest are invited and I imagine it will be a wonderful business opportunity. You could bring Elaine and Cutler as well."

[[There, so that's out in the open, and now we need to get Cutler and Keyara together before the 25th, so they can sneak into the ball together and everything can play out like we planned a while back, remember? ;-) ]]

-----------

The rest of the meal was eaten in silence at the Cantrell residence. Keyara decided she'd said enough for now; at least until she and Cutler had to share a room for the night. Dinner was over and now... now they could resume their little "mind war" upstairs where Mr. Cantrell couldn't yell at them as easily. Keyara pushed in her chair, and bid Oliver and Nathanial good night. She began walking towards the staircase, but paused tersely. "Are you coming?" She asked, motioning towards Cutler with a hint of impatience lining her voice. Mr. Cantrell nodded towards Cutler to follow, while finishing cleaning up. Oliver didn't move from where he sat at the table, leather-bound book in his lap. Keyara didn't wait as she began the ascent, floorboards creaking with her every step.

Anthony smiled to himself and nodded his head in satisfaction. “Very good, my friend,” he said, casting a grin towards Lord Bellings. He relaxed in his own chair and let the new thoughts sink in. Him… a Lord of the Company. The stresses of the day seemed to melt away in the friendly silence and sweet thoughts of victory. Cutler’s safety was no longer a huge concern for him. Everything was perfect. Everything would be perfect from now on. “really?” Anthony’s attention was caught and he watched as his friend pulled out an envelope. He took it and grinned while listening to his friend talk. He turned away and looked down at the envelope for a minute. “indeed you are right,” he looked back at Lord Bellings, “Elaine will be delighted. What a grand occasion it will be. As well as an opportunity for Cutler to meet a pretty girl.” he gave his friend a wink. “Bellings, my good man, how about another drink in honor of the occasion?”

(yep… this aughta be fun! :P I can’t wait to have Cutler sneak Keyara in… especially if Lord Beckett is planning on getting Cutler with one of his wealthy friend’s daughters or something… :teehee: )
__________

Cutler didn’t savor the rest of his meal, in fact, he found it all rather revolting now. The food tasted poorly, everything was bad to him after what went on at the beginning of the meal. How dare they turn him into the bad guy! Whenever he could he cast Keyara a hateful look. Thankfully, all meals must come to an end. When it did, he only watched with distain as Keyara got up. He wouldn't pay her the normal respect which men paid women by standing up and bidding them a good night. He looked at her as she spoke to him, but he said nothing. He saw Cantrell nod at him, but tried to ignore it. Why couldn’t he be like Quiet Boy? He didn’t have to go up with that girl yet. Or ever if he had his choice. He turned back and watched as she walked up alone. perhaps I could just sleep in a chair or something tonight, he thought as he looked around the rooms. Nothing in it looked overly comfortable or nice. Rather dirty, actually, he thought while fondly thinking of his own feather bed at home.

Lord Bellings grinned at the mention of another drink. "How could I refuse such an offer?" With a smile, he handed Anthony his glass, a bit too eager to have another taste of that brandy. The masquerade ball was going to be the talk of the town for three weeks straight, and everything had to be perfect. But how could it be anything but? Especially when he was helping to organize it. "Yes, I suspect it will be a grand occasion... best of luck to Cutler. I could set him up with my cousin's daughter.. she's quite the catch if I do say so myself."

[[I hope three weeks RP time is enough for Cutler and Keyara to get together. :erm: ]]

-----------

Keyara was making her way down the second floor hallway, not waiting for him. She placed a hand on the dirty gold doorknob and the hinges creaked loudly as she went inside. Wouldn't hurt to clean up a bit, she told herself, beginning to pick up piles of old clothing and throw them into the closet. She pulled back the covers of the bed and changed into her nightgown. But when Cutler still hadn't come up, she decided to go find him. Keyara leaned over the banister and watched him for a few moments. He was so cute.. and this would be fun. She let one sleeve fall off of her shoulder. "You coming?" Keyara asked, smirking at him seductively.

[[Lol, this is gonna be awesome. :P ]]

Anthony laughed and poured his friend another glassful of his brandy. “To be sure,” Anthony nodded in agreement about the masquerade. “Oh, really?” he raised his eyebrows, pondering the new idea, “that's a wonderful idea, Bellings! Marvelous! It might be just what the boy needs.” he poured himself another glass of brandy. He was pleased with the way things were going now. Perhaps this girl could teach Cutler some responsibility.

(yeah… I think it will be enough time though ;) )

_________

Cutler was startled at the sound of Keyara’s voice. He stood up and looked at her. He didn’t say a thing, which made for an awkward silence. At least, to him it seemed awkward. It seemed as if he and Keyara were the only two in the room. He stared at her for a moment. This couldn’t be serious. It wasn’t proper for a girl her age and himself to be like this. He looked back at Mr. Cantrell although he knew he wouldn’t get any help from him. He sighed, this honestly was like a nightmare, but he would make the best of it. She was… cute he had to admit it. Although the second the thought came to him ee tried to push it back out of his mind. She wasn‘t his kind. She was a street urchin. A poor, dirty…he trailed off as he looked back at her with an expression that could be described as the way a pitiful puppy looks.

Lord Bellings nodded in agreement. "My thoughts exactly. Very well then, I'll make sure she's there looking her best. Mallory is her name. There is no doubt in my mind that she and Cutler will get along fine." He dusted off his jacket and watched the clock on top of the mantle. "In fact, I'd better get going soon, before the wife starts to worry. Thank you for the drinks, however."

-----------

Oliver started up the stairs, his face still buried in the book. But for a moment, he looked up and provided Cutler with a somewhat evil glare, definitely not willing to open up his room to any strangers. He turned back to the literary work and disappeared up the stairs, the only sound that could be heard was the click of his door as it shut behind him.

Mr. Cantrell didn't seem to notice as he finished cleaning up and clambered over to his bed, which was a large futon-like chair in the middle of the room. He mumbled to himself as he pulled a cover over his body and fixed the pillow behind his head, but said nothing to the teenagers who were practically having a staring contest with each other.

Keyara didn't say a word as she watched the dogs come over and sniff Cutler like he was a fresh piece of meat. She could stand there all night without saying a word if that was what he wanted. He would try to postpone going upstairs as long as he could, she knew, but there was no stopping the inevitable. If he wasn't going to stay with her, then where would he go? It was too dirty for him outside, while the dogs had roam of the lower floor. There was really no other place he could sleep unless he was an insomniac. She laughed softly and shook her head. His antics made her laugh... he was quite the enigma, nothing like Keyara had ever seen before.

“Alright, my friend,” Anthony said with a broad smile, “Cutler will be delighted to meet her, I am sure.” he nodded, resolutely, although it was a question of who would be more delighted, Anthony or Cutler. Anthony smiled to himself at the very thought. His son would look his best and he and Mallory would be just fine. He couldn’t help thinking of perhaps his son finding the right girl, however he quickly trapped the thought back into the dark holds of his mind. That was what old or frivolous women thought of, not him, not the Lord of the Company. He looked up as Bellings stood up, he looked to the clock as his friend did too and nodded. “Of course. You are welcome, Bellings. Anytime you have such good news you’re always welcome,” he grinned, jokingly.

_______

Cutler glared first at Oliver and then Mr. Cantrell as they abandoned him and his cause. He reached down and petted one of the dogs absentmindedly while still trying to think of a way to get out of it, knowing Keyara’s eyes were glued on him. He decided to keep his concentration on the dogs, noting that they weren’t exactly what his father would call pure bred, not like his father’s fine hunting dogs. this is nonsense, he told himself, it’s just a girl… a dirty, foul, poor girl. There’s nothing to be afraid of with her. It’s only for one night, you don’t even have to talk to her. Suddenly, he resolutely looked up and started walking up the stairs, brushing past her without saying a word.

"Yes, I am sure more good news is to follow my friend... I shall see you tomorrow morning, 7AM sharp, to sign those papers for your new position, with which I do hope you have the best of luck. But you are a fine leader already; I cannot picture things going amiss with you in charge, Anthony." Lord Bellings smiled assuringly and took his hat from the coat rack in the hall, placing it over his powdered white wig. "Good night, Lady Elaine," he waved and reached for the doorknob.

"Farewell, Lord Bellings," she said, laying the book she had been reading on her lap momentarily. "Tell the wife and children I said hello, yes?"

-----------

Keyara made a grand, sweeping gesture behind Cutler's back as he so nonchalantly brushed past her. "My room is to the right," she announced, following closely behind as they went down the corridor. "Or you could just sleep out here in the hallway; either option is fine by me." Keyara went ahead of him and entered her room, watching him out of the corner of her eye.

[[Still have no clue how they're going to fall for each other... Any ideas PD? :erm: ]]

[you know, this RP had SO much going for it... and just... so many lovely ideas went into it. I don't want it to die either, Ara. I really don't. Letting it die feels kinda like letting some of my dreams die or something... it doesn't feel right. so I am going to try my best to reply to it soon... I am going to try.... I don't want to let you or Beckara down... :(]

(well, here I am! Finally! I feel so OOC… hopefully that'll wear off after a little while)

Anthony’s face continued to light up as he listened to his friend. He quickly followed him to the door. “This is excellent! I will be there, you can count on me,” he paused, standing beside his wife. “Yes,” he chimed in after his wife’s farewells. “Have a good night, my friend. And thank you for bringing us such excellent news!” As soon as the door shut and Lord Bellings had left them, Anthony turned to Elaine. “This is wonderful news, Elaine! It’s just what I’ve been waiting for!” For a moment the trouble with his son had vanished from his mind, all he could think of was what he had just gained.

-----------------------------------------

Cutler scowled and looked back at her, but kept walking down the passageway. He hesitated as she entered the room. He looked back down the now dark hallway, wondering which was a better option. Go into the room, alone, with this girl or sleep out in the hallway? Sleep on the floor? he thought, indignantly. Or sleep in a girl’s room… what’s worse this girls room. he wrinkled his nose, but continued to stand there stupidly.

[[Eek, I’ve been really slow to reply to this… ]]

Elaine suppressed a yawn behind her hand and glanced at the grandfather clock. It was now going on eleven-thirty; by this time any other night they would have been in bed for an hour. Sleep was quickly overpowering her senses and clouding her thoughts. Perhaps Cutler will return in the morning… I pray that he is safe and sound, wherever he may be. “I think it would be best if we were to retire for the night,” she said, gently placing a hand on Anthony’s shoulder. “You have an important day tomorrow and need to get some rest.”

-----------------------------------

Keyara sighed, deciding that enough was enough. If he wanted to be an insomniac and stand there all night, it was fine by her. We’re being hospitable by taking him in for the night… the least he could do is accept our kindness… “When you make up your mind, please let me know.” She said, turning on her heel and heading into her bedroom once again. She slipped beneath the faded covers of the mattress and rolled onto her side, turning her back to the door and Cutler.

(don’t worry about that, Ara, I’m slow when it comes to just about everything… )

At his wife’s mention of retiring for the night, Anthony frowned. He wasn’t sure he would be able to sleep as childish as that sounded. There were so many things to get ready for the next day not to mention the absence of his son which needed to be fixed. It won't do to have him off who-knows-where at such a time when our family needs to look good, he thought. However, he couldn’t help but admit that his wife was right. He did need sleep if he was too look his absolute best the next day. “You’re right as always,” he consented, “and at first light have servants out looking for Cutler. We need to get him back home before news of this leaks out.”

_________________

Disgusted by Keyara’s words, Cutler made up his mind then and there as to what he would do. He would go in there. He would do it just to spite her. To make her night as miserable as he was sure his would be. His mother would be horrified by this, his father revolted but they wouldn’t ever have to know that he slept in a dirty girl's room. “Fine,” he said and followed quickly behind her. He calmly fixed his eyes squarly on her and watched her get into the bed. Cutler stood just inside of the doorway, waiting for her to say or do something. After all she didn’t expect him to sleep on the floor, did she? He was a guest. It was bad enough they didn’t have a proper guest room to house him in but to actually make guests sleep on the floor? That was horrifying. He cleared his throat to get her attention and waited.

Elaine nodded as she began up the stairs first, with Anthony following close behind her. “I certainly shall. I am sure he has not gone far, but I would like nothing more than to put my mind to rest, knowing he is safe and sound in his own bed.” Her hand slid along the banister and it seemed to take forever to reach their bedchamber where eager servants were waiting to help them settle in for the night. But even after she was dressed in her nightclothes and the servants had been dismissed, Elaine could not fall asleep. She turned beneath the covers and looked up into the darkness, hoping that her son would return safe and sound.

-----------------------------

Keyara glanced backwards over her shoulder, half surprised to find Cutler had taken a step inside of her room. “Well, it’s either bed or floor… I’ll leave you to be the judge of that.” She rolled back over and smirked; it was fun teasing him like this, a part of her laughed, but was this the way she would want to be treated in return? Of course not. And so she bit her lip and prayed he would opt for the latter. A handsome young man like him was staying in their house, despite the differences between their social classes. The warmth that emanated from him would comfort her to no end. She had never had a real boyfriend before, aside from the one boy who had kissed her and then moved away a few weeks later. It was the closest she had come to love in a short fifteen years. But she could never picture herself and Cutler together, at least for now.
