Lucy screamed playfully as her father pulled her small body off the couch. She then sat in his lap and asked, "What do you mean? Edward rested all night with me."
She then ignored this last question and looked to her mother with wide eyes, "Mommy! Where's Edward's present?"

Katherine smiled lovingly to Lucy and pointed to the small box that was placed under the tree. "Right there, sweetheart." She said softly and then took a sip of her coffee that she had made for her and Timothy.

Timothy looked under the tree as well and notioned for Lucy to go get it, "Go on...give it to Ed."

Lucy smiled and ran toward the tree, with the new doll still in her grasp.
Picking up the small square present that was wrapped in red and green stripes, she jumped back onto the couch and placed it in Edward's lap. "Here! Open it! Open it!" she said as she tapped his shoulder.

For Edward
The cardboard white box was titled, in green cursive. Kim's cursive. Edward had seen her writing before.
Edward carefully snipped off the red and green ribbons, tore off the tape and with some time opened the box. It smelled like old flowers.
The box was filled with journals, pink and blue notebooks, paintings, sketchbooks, Avon products, a gold locket heart necklace, and a vanilla white dress. Edward searched in and lifted out the dress first, he didn't know why exactly. The dress was silky smooth with small buttons lining up the front. It was perfectly white, except for the brownish spot near the shoulder—blood had been there once. He knew that dress.
Edward stared at the dress, remembering everything about that night. He remembered sculpting, accidentally cutting Kim's hand, running away from the police, holding her, saving Kevin, running away again, Kim following him, Jim beating him, Jim slapping Kim...killing Jim...and Kim kissing him good-bye. It ended abruptly.
"Kim..." he said softly, sadly and quietly with a faint sparkle in his black eyes.

Lucy remained quiet and softly touched the dress. "Is this grandma Kim's dress, Edward?" She looked slightly confused when she asked him this. "What's that?" Lucy said as she pointed to the brown stain on the dress.

Katherine watched Edward and felt tears reach her eyes. She swallowed hard and quickly looked down to the ground. She covered her face with her hands and tried her hardest not to cry over her mother again.

Edward stared at the brown stain. He knew what that was from all to well.
He wheezed in a tight breath to speak but then started to cough in a violent streak.
Timothy took the box away from Edward and also grabbed Lucy off the couch. "Katherine...call a doctor."

Lucy felt her stomach drop and she looked worriedly at Edward's skinny face. "Edward, what's wrong?" Her eyes grew large and she looked to her father, "A doctor? Daddy, what's wrong?" She could sense panic in the air and this frightented her. Was Edward going to die like grandma Kim? "Is he going to be ok? Daddy! Mommy!" Lucy began to cry and scream their names louder.

Katherine quickly stood up and ran into the kitchen. She picked up the phone and dialed 9-1-1. She spoke to the police and told them where she lived. Once she finished speaking to them, she hung up the phone and went to Edward. She started patting his back, to help him.

Timothy looked to Lucy with a tight brow, "Stop it! Stop screaming, he'll be all right! You just need to settle down!"
Edward in the meantime kept coughing. His eyes went scared and they tick-tocked around the room feeling helpless.

But Lucy couldn't stop herself. What would happen to Edward? He was the last memory she had of her grandmother....nothing could replace the feeling Edward gave her. "NO! Edward! Edward!" she screamed and by this point was sobbing. Her face was soaked with tears and she wanted desperately to help him.

Katherine continued patting Edward's back. She looked over to Timothy and Lucy, with wide eyes. She was scared out of her mind for Edward. She bit her lower lip and sighed deeply.

"Lucy stop!" Timothy bent down and scooped his daughter up, away from the scene and into her own bedroom.
"Stay here!" he shouted at the child before walking out the room, closing the door.
